Chapter 623: Who Is Going to Kill Her?
The pain made Christian gasp. It nearly caused him to pass out. Enduring the agony, Christian tried his best to remain sober. But it was too much for him to bear, and he unwittingly released Wendy, who took the opportunity to escape as fast as she could.
Soon, Christian’s men came to him. Seeing that Christian was injured, one of his bodyguards immediately stooped to help him. "Mr. Lucas, how are you? I will get your wound treated immediately."
"Give me the gun," Christian said as he fought to stay conscious.
His bodyguard did not know what Christian wanted with a gun at this time, but he obeyed anyway.
Christian took aim at Wendy and pulled the trigger. His mind was filled with the image of Wendy firing a shot at him. The rational side of him was aware that he should not want a woman who betrayed him.
Taking a deep breath, Christian closed his eyes and pulled the trigger. The bullet hit the ground next to Wendy’s feet. Wendy stopped dead in her tracks.
"Wendy Stewart, take another step and you’ll be dead!" Christian threatened, his voice savage.
Wendy was indignant. She refused to be imprisoned by Christian again. She took another step forward. What followed was a second bullet.
His bodyguard saw that Christian had no intention of killing Wendy. He said, "Mr.
Lucas, I’ll get her."
Christian’s men knew how he felt about Wendy. Christian did not speak, but his bodyguard understood what needed to be done. He immediately ran to Wendy and whispered, "Ms. Stewart, you should come back with us."
Wendy bit her lip hard and drew blood. She remained unrelenting and took another step forward. As expected, a third bullet hit the ground next to her feet.
Wendy knew that Christian did not want her dead. He was a skilled marksman.
Missing his target thrice in a row was unlikely. But those were warning shots nonetheless. He was ruthless and unfeeling. If she continued to insist on leaving, he might just kill her.
Wendy decided that she had to take a gamble. Would Christian kill her?
"Ms. Stewart, Mr. Lucas has always been very good to you. You are safe by his side," said Christian’s bodyguard. "Please, come back with us."
Wendy took a deep breath. She realized she could not afford to take that gamble.
Christian would never let her go. Even if he did not kill her, his men would take her down.
Wendy had finally made up her mind to kill Christian. Alas, the gun was not loaded.
Now, she did not even have a chance to escape. At this thought, her eyes glistened with tears. She said nothing as she turned around, walking back towards Christian.
When Christian saw Wendy turning back, the gun fell from his hand. He was spent.
As Wendy stopped in front of him, Christian slipped into unconsciousness. His men called out to him, but he had passed out cold.
Wendy was emotionless. As she followed them back, she prayed that Christian will never wake up again.
...
Wendy got into Christian’s car, forced to return to that place.
Seeing Christian carried into the underground hospital by bodyguards, only numbness remained in Wendy’s eyes.
Zen had been waiting to see Wendy’s status.
She made a silent prayer that Wendy would not come back.
However, Wendy still came back.
Zen leaned on a cane and came out of the living room when she heard the sounds.
Then, she saw that Christian was injured and unconscious. Wendy was standing at the door covered with blood.
Zen immediately stepped forward and asked with concern, "Wendy, are you injured?"
"I am fine." Wendy shook her head, looked down at the blood on her body, and explained, "it is all Christian’s blood."
"Then, Christian..." Zen looked in the direction of the underground hospital.
She could not help asking this question.
Wendy turned her head to look at Zen’s expression and asked faintly, "Are you worried about him?"
"No, I just asked casually." Zen’s eyes dodged, obviously not telling the truth.
"He got injured when he was saving me," Wendy said truthfully, "but I wanted to kill him. If it wasn’t for the pistol running out of bullets, he would be dead."
Listening to Wendy’s words, Zen was a little shocked. Would someone like Christian hurt himself to save another person? Then, how much did he love Wendy?
Zen was not jealous but merely felt that she had been waiting in vain and got nothing in return all these years.
She used to think that Christian was born indifferent and ruthless, and he treated everyone like this. Therefore, even if Christian gave her the cold shoulder, Zen could understand it.
And yet, this was not the case.
Christian was not born ruthless, he was sentient.
However, he was sentient towards Wendy only.
Looking into Zen’s eyes, Wendy asked faintly, "Zen, if I really killed Christian, would you hate me?"
Hearing these words, Zen immediately shook his head.
"Really?" Wendy asked.
"Christian is supposed to die. He should have died long ago," Zen said word for word.
She could not control her feelings, but she still was rational.
Wendy smiled when she heard the words and did not talk anymore.
It was just that she was getting desperate. She intended to leave and even kill Christian. After waking up from the coma, Christian would take revenge for sure.
Christian might not kill her, but he would hardly let her live an ordinary life as before.
Wendy reached out and touched her belly. She was afraid that Christian would go after the child in her stomach.
"If Christian is dead, tell me."
After that, Wendy turned and walked upstairs.
Looking at Wendy’s back, Zen wanted to ask her what happened after they went out.
Although depending on the situation, if Zen wanted to ask, she had to wait for another time.
Nonetheless, she was still curious, why did Christian get hurt when they went out to watch a movie?
Wendy actually had injuries on her body as well.
But the injury was not serious, and there were a few burn blisters on her feet.
She went back to the suite, shut herself in the bathroom, and lay in the bathtub.
After closing her eyes, Wendy’s mind was full of the gunfight just now.
The gunshots seem to be still ringing in her ears.
Until now, Wendy still could not believe that Christian actually took the bullet to save her.
And she did not know the identity of those people in black who were out to kill her.
Was it a play directed and acted by Christian?
However, it was unlikely.
If Christian staged the whole thing by himself, there was no need to set the movie theater on fire.
Moreover, Christian’s subordinates suffered heavy losses due to their casualties and injuries.
Nevertheless, if Christian did not make the whole thing up, who would want to kill her?
...
Michael stayed by Leah’s bed, fearing that something miserable might happen to her.
Michael did not even know that Leah had used to suffer so much.
Almost every 10 minutes, Michael would check Leah’s temperature.
As long as there was nothing wrong with Leah, Michael was at ease.
Leah had already fallen asleep at this time. Michael looked at his son and asked in a low voice, "As for Leah’s former attending physician Paul, is there any news about him?"
Jake shook his head, looking gloomy.
"Then give me his phone number. Let me call him." Michael thought that he must let Paul come to Lake City at any expense.
For now, nothing was more crucial than Leah’s safety.
"It is probably useless for you to make a phone call," Jake sighed and said. "Money cannot buy off Paul. What’s more, he works in Rheinsville City. It is difficult to reach him."
What Jake had said was true.
"Uncle Todd..." Jake suddenly thought of something.
"Todd?" Michael raised his brows upon hearing his name. "What about him? Can he solve the problem?"
"Uncle Todd and Uncle Paul are old acquaintances," Jake said. "Uncle Paul is likely to do Uncle Todd a favor."
"Then I will call Todd." Michael immediately looked for his cell phone and searched through his contact list.
Seeing Michael give Todd a call at once, Jake pursed his lips. He felt something inexplicable, and it showed in his eyes.
Initially, Jake thought that Michael would hesitate over this suggestion. After all, he and Todd used to be conflicted because of Wendy’s affairs.
Unexpectedly, Michael did not even hesitate.
Seemingly, his daddy did love his children.
The call soon got through. Michael immediately lowered his tone and said, "Hello, Mr. Lewis..."
Hearing Michael’s voice, Todd was more than surprised.
He thought that it must have been important for Michael to call him.
"Mr. Lucas..." Todd clenched the phone tightly. He could guess that Michael had a favor to ask him.
Otherwise, Michael would not call him all of a sudden.
"Mr. Lewis, I was not very good to you before. I apologize. I hope you will not remember my past offenses." Michael’s tone was sincere.
Michael’s words made Todd even more surprised.
In the past, Todd was also at fault.
Todd had moved on and stopped hating Michael a long time ago.
"Mr. Lucas, let’s get to the point. If I can help, you know I will," Todd said matter-of-factly.
"Do you know Paul?" Michael asked. "He was Leah’s former attending physician."
"What’s wrong with Leah?" Todd asked worriedly.
"Something happened. It’s a long story. We have already given Paul a call, but he has not returned it yet. Now, Leah needs him, and we hope he can come to Lake City. I heard Jake say that you guys are old acquaintances, so I am asking you to help."
"Okay, I will call Dr. Paul right away." Todd had seen Leah and Jake grow up, and his affection for the twins was no less than that of their daddy, Michael.
Todd was also very anxious when he heard that Leah ran into an accident.
He would help for sure.
After hanging up on Michael, Todd contacted Paul immediately.
