Chapter 614: Think About How to Resolve This

Christian agreed so heartily that it made Wendy feel uneasy.

But she couldn’t care so much then.

She would think about it later after she got out of there.

"Is there anything else? If there isn’t, I really want to rest," Wendy said, implying her wish for him to leave.

"Rest well. Good night." Wendy had agreed to watch a movie with him, and he was thrilled with excitement. Although he was well aware that her real intention was to leave the place.

But as long as she agreed, it was good news.

So, Christian turned to leave in a good mood.

The moment Christian left, Wendy immediately closed the door.

"Why did you agree to watch a movie with him? We don’t know what he is up to again," Zen said with concern.

"I will find an opportunity to get out of here tomorrow. If I manage to leave, I will find someone to save you at the first instance," Wendy said softly.

Wendy initially wanted to ask if she could bring Zen along for the movie.

But she took into consideration that Zen had yet to recover from her leg injury. If she really had a chance to run away, it would be difficult enough for her to run away alone.

If she were to bring Zen along, it would be even more impossible for them to escape.

Sending help to save Zen after she ran away would be the best arrangement.

"Run away?" Zen obviously looked worried.

"I know the chance is slim, but I have to give it a try," Wendy said and let out a sigh.

She continued, "I really don’t want to just sit and wait."

She knew that if Michael could tell that the woman was a counterfeit Wendy, he would definitely send manpower to search for her.

However, Rheinsville was so huge. She didn’t even know where she was herself. She wondered how long Michael would need until he found her.

It would be best if she could escape from there herself.

"All right," Zen nodded. She let out a heavy sigh too.

She couldn’t help but glance at the big bouquet of lilies.

She didn’t say anything else.

She only felt empty in her heart. It hurt a little. It was suffocating.

Zen couldn’t help but think to herself, what did she do wrong that God had to punish her?

Or whatever she had experienced was karma from her previous life.

God had sent Christian to torment her in this lifetime.

.....

Lake City.

Michael received a call from the hospital early in the morning.

The doctor completed the check-up as requested. Then, he explained that he couldn’t get the result so soon. So, he advised Michael to go home first, and he would give Michael a call once he got the result.

Looking at the caller ID, it was Milo calling. Michael knew that it meant the result was out.

Michael took a deep breath and answered the phone. He asked solemnly, "How’s the result?"

Milo sighed and said, "There is slow-acting poison in your body."

The result was within Michael’s expectations.

However, hearing a definite answer from Milo still took Michael by surprise.

"But you don’t have to worry. The poison is slow acting. It will take some time for it to act up. Why not take a trip to the hospital? It is hard to explain over the phone. I am not specialized in lab tests. Come to the hospital, and we can talk about it," Milo suggested.

"All right." Michael immediately got out of bed. He changed, took the walking stick and car keys, and wanted to leave the house.

He did not expect that Jake would come out of his room before he left the house.

"I am going too," Jake said solemnly with a grim look.

Michael hesitated but nodded.

They arrived at the hospital soon after.

They went to the lab test chief doctor’s office straight away.

Milo was already waiting for them inside.

...

"The results are out. Mr. Lucas, please take a look first," the doctor said, putting the test results in front of Michael.

Michael wasn’t a doctor. He couldn’t understand it, so he waited for them to explain.

"This is a new slow-acting poison. There isn’t anything like this in the market as of now. It is very poisonous, but it acts slower. Based on the test results, the amount of poison in your body is the least. There is only a very small sum," the doctor said.

"Leah has the most poison in her body. It might also be due to her young age, and her health condition isn’t great, to begin with. That is why the poison got into her body quicker. Jake and Zess have about the same amount of poison in their body.

They are doing better than Leah.

"According to the timing, the poison in Leah’s body should take about a week until it takes effect. As for Jake and Zess, it would probably break out in one to three months.

"The poison mainly invades people’s immune system, lowering one’s immunity to the point where it becomes zero.

"To put it simply, when the poison takes effect completely, even a tiny cut on a finger would lead to death from tetanus.

"Or wind blowing against your body would lead to death from catching a cold too."

"What you mean is that once the poison spreads, there is no doubt we will die?"

Michael uttered viciously, frowning.

"Theoretically, yes," the doctor nodded. He then added, "However, it is a new poison, after all. So, there isn’t any case study for reference. I wouldn’t dare to put a conclusion to what will happen in the end."

"Why is the time frame for Leah so short? It will take effect in a week?" Michael asked closely.

Jake’s eyebrows were tightly knitted, sitting next to Michael.

"This will require Leah to go through a full-body check-up. I don’t have Leah’s medical records. Nor has she done any examination in our hospital before. So, I don’t know how Leah’s health condition is," the doctor answered.

"I roughly understand," Jake said drily, hanging his head low.

Everyone immediately directed their focus to Jake.

"Leah’s health condition hasn’t been great since young. Her immune system is flawed by birth. Before she turned three years old, she spent all her life in the hospital," Jake said. He recalled the past, and his gaze on Michael grew with hatred.

From his viewpoint, it all happened because of his dad, Michael.

"Immune system flawed by birth? Why don’t I know about this?" Michael asked, frowning.

"Why don’t you know? What do you know? The few years when Leah and I were in Rheinsville with Mummy, how do you think we lived?" Jake said, looking at Michael with a cold smirk.

What Jake said made Michael’s heart ache and remorseful.

He was useless. He made his wife and children go through so much suffering.

Jake continued, "Those few years, Leah always had a fever. She was snatched from the jaws of death many times.

"Her condition stabled in the past two years, and she is more like a normal person.

Her body constitution became healthier too.

"Mummy and I thought Leah would recover and all her pain would be in the past.

"But I never thought that this slow-acting poison would be aiming at the immune system."

Whatever Jake said made Michael’s mind go blank.

No wonder the poison in Leah’s body was so much more than theirs, and the time to take effect was so much shorter than theirs.

Wendy was nowhere to be found, and the two children were poisoned.

Michael felt that everything was in the worst condition ever.

He was the CEO of a big company, but he didn’t know what to do. He didn’t even know what to say.

...

Jake turned to look at Michael. His eyes were obviously fueled with hatred. He questioned Michael, "Why isn’t Yvonne Taylor dead?"

"I... " Michael didn’t know how to answer the question. He didn’t even dare look into Jake’s eyes.

"I know. Christian saved Yvonne. They hid for so long just for today."

Jake took a deep breath. Although his voice was tender, what he said was rather mature, "Why didn’t you send anyone to check? If you were to double-check back then, how could Yvonne be alive?

"Even if she is alive, we could have taken precaution instead of being taken by surprise when they launched an attack."

"I’m sorry," Michael said. He didn’t know what else he could say besides apologizing.

Jake knew he couldn’t blame Michael for what had happened.

However, he needed somewhere to vent his emotions.

Milo was astonished at what he heard. He couldn’t help but ask, "Are you talking about Yvonne Taylor?"

Milo knew that Michael used to have a girlfriend named Yvonne Taylor.

Although she was his ex-girlfriend, Michael treated her more like his younger sister.

But Michael had no other woman around him, so everyone assumed that she was his girlfriend, and he didn’t bother clarifying it.

Milo had furthered his studies overseas all year round. Hence, he wasn’t aware of what had happened.

But he did know about the incident where Yvonne had passed away.

When Milo found out that Michael killed Yvonne with his own hands because of Wendy, Milo was surprised.

At the same time, he realized Michael was really in love with Wendy.

But then, Yvonne wasn’t dead?!

"Yvonne didn’t die. She even went through plastic surgery to look like Wendy. The last time Christian took Wendy by force, the person he returned was Yvonne who had done plastic surgery," Michael explained. He took the blame, saying, "I didn’t manage to recognize my own wife at the first instance. It is my fault. I deserve this!"

Then, Michael gave himself a tight slap on his cheek.

Michael’s explanation was simple and clear. Milo understood what had happened then.

Milo seized Michael’s hand from slapping himself. Then, Milo sighed and said, "This is not the time to point fingers at anyone. You should think about how to resolve this.

Don’t you want to listen to the doctor about how to solve the poison?"

What Milo said directed Michael and Jake’s attention to the lab test doctor.

The doctor pursed his lips and said, "If Leah’s immune system is flawed by birth, it makes sense why the time for the poison to take effect in her is so short.

"I suggest you bring her to the hospital immediately to carry out a full-body check-up. Then, monitor the spread of poison in her body for the next twenty-four hours so we can take control of the poison in the first instance.

"On top of that, bring her past medical records to our hospital. We can arrange for the best doctor to take care of her accordingly.

"It’d be best if we have the contact number of her attending doctor. So, we could talk about her actual condition and see if there is any resolution for Leah’s case. It would be even better if her attending doctor could come to our hospital.

"Of course, before we find the antidote to the poison, you would have to work together with the hospital to go through the examination and treatment.

"Our research team will try our best to develop an antidote to the poison in the shortest time possible."

"Mummy has always been the one taking care of Leah’s medical records, so I have no idea where she hides it," Jake immediately replied. He then continued, "But I do know Leah’s attending doctor. I used to keep her company in the hospital all the time. I am quite close to the doctor. I remember his phone number."
