Chapter 512: He’s Up To No Good
Jake was putting down his backpack at the moment and initially intended to return to his room. When Wendy spoke to him, his little forehead twitched slightly. He knew what Wendy wanted to talk to him about. After hesitating for a bit, Jake walked over.
"Mommy..." Jake sat beside Wendy and his big eyes could not help taking a look at Wendy’s tummy. Now that the fetus was only more than a month old, there was no visible bump.
Wendy held Jake’s little hands and smiled gently as she asked, "Little Jake, how was school today?"
Jake answered, "Pretty good. You don’t have to worry about my grades. I already know what’s being taught in school. You don’t have to worry about Leah either, I will coach her."
Wendy indeed didn’t have to worry about this, she was just trying to ease into the topic she wanted to talk about with Jake.
Biting her lip, Wendy asked directly, "Little Jake, Mommy wants to ask you a serious question. Do you wish to have another younger sibling?"
Jake knew that Wendy would be asking this question. He shook his head and his tone was similarly serious, "I don’t."
"Why not?" Although Wendy had expected this answer, she was still a little worried.
She asked, "Are you afraid that once this baby is born, Daddy and Mommy wouldn’t love you and Leah as much?"
Jake shook his head.
"No?" Wendy creased her forehead and asked, "Then could you tell Mommy why?"
"Mommy..." Jake was young but he possessed maturity that was beyond his years. He said with a sigh, "I know that you and Daddy love me and Leah very much, and that no matter how many children you have, both of you will love us no less.
"I’m not against having a younger sibling. Whether we’ll be having a little brother or sister, I will love and protect this baby.
"It’s just that your health hasn’t been good. When you were sick in the hospital previously, I’ve heard the doctor say that you’re not suited to be pregnant again.
"Women giving birth have to suffer a lot in the first place, and if Mommy insists on giving birth to this child, then your suffering would be greater than the average person."
Wendy did not think that Jake was unhappy because of this reason. Reaching out to hug Jake, Wendy’s eyes got wet.
"Mommy, be careful of your tummy." Jake reached out to push Wendy, making her let go of him. He was afraid of hurting his mommy.
Wendy let go of Jake and her tears fell nonetheless. "Little Jake, you love Mommy more than I’d imagined."
Jake reached out to wipe away Wendy’s tears. "I know Daddy and Mommy want to keep this child. Since you both like it, I will support you. But Mommy, I hope that you can put yourself first."
"Little Jake, Mommy did not want to keep this baby at first. But my body can’t take the surgery. It’s safer for me to give birth to this child. That’s why Daddy and Mommy decided to keep this baby. But don’t you worry, Mommy and Daddy will still love you and little Leah the same," Wendy said.
"I know," Jake said as he nodded his head seriously.
"Mommy, eat some fruit." Leah came out from the kitchen holding a plate of fruit as she said smilingly, "I heard that eating fruits is good for the baby. Have more, Mommy, so that little baby will look beautiful."
...
Leah put the plate on the tea table and held a piece of fruit near Wendy’s mouth.
"Mommy..." Wendy opened her mouth happily and ate the apple.
"Mommy, what else do you feel like eating?" Leah pointed at the fruit on the plate, "Grape? Cherry? Or orange?"
"They’re all fine. As long as it’s fed to me by little Leah, Mommy likes all of it."
Wendy’s eyes were still glistening with tears, but her smile was exceptionally happy.
"Have a grape then." Leah fed Wendy and said, "Grapes give babies big and pretty eyes."
Hearing Leah’s words, Wendy could not help but laugh, "Who told you that?"
"Mark said so," Leah answered.
"Who’s Mark?" Wendy asked.
"Mark sits behind me. His mother is having another baby too. He said that his mother likes eating grapes. She even said that by eating more grapes, she’d be able to give birth to a daughter with big eyes. His mother wants a daughter," Leah explained smilingly.
"Do you all usually talk about such things?" Wendy could not help but find it funny.
Do little children nowadays discuss about their parents giving birth at the kindergarten? She recalled that she was clueless about such matters when she was young, and would rather be playing with mud.
"Yeah, Mark also said that when I’m pregnant in future, he’d buy lots of grapes for me to eat too, he said that..." Jake immediately reached out to cover Leah’s mouth with his little hand before she could finish speaking.
"What are you doing?" Leah widened her eyes and looked unhappily at Jake.
"You’re not to play with Mark anymore!" Jake still did not know what it was about, but that hateful Mark had spoken so much to his little sister. Jake hated Mark for always approaching Leah to play with him at the kindergarten. He did not think that even with him keeping an eye on Leah everyday, Mark was still able to find a chance to speak to Leah.
"Why, Mark is very good to me," Leah said innocently. She looked dreamy as she continued, "He often brings me chocolate and sweets."
"Have you never eaten chocolate and sweets before? Just because he gave you some food and you’re talking about giving birth to children?" Jake said very disapprovingly to Leah.
"But I’m a girl, I’d definitely have to give birth to children in future. What’s wrong with us chatting for a bit?" Leah pursed her little mouth and complained with dissatisfaction, "Jake, forget it if you’re not likeable at school, why are you not allowing me to make friends either."
As she spoke, Leah grabbed Wendy’s sleeve, "Mommy, let me tell you, Jake is always grumpy at school. There was a girl who gave him sweets previously. It’s okay if he didn’t want it, but he scolded her and made her cry."
"I didn’t scold her, I just said I don’t like to eat sweets and asked her not to give me anymore sweets in future," Jake said.
"But you said it so fiercely that she cried." Leah then huffed, "You don’t like it but I like it. You don’t want what others give you but I like to eat what Mark gives me. You don’t want to eat what others give you, but you can’t stop me."
"Giving you sweets every day, I can tell he’s up to no good."
Hearing Leah and Jake squabble, Wendy sputtered a laugh.
"Mommy, you think it’s funny?" Jake stared at Wendy, clearly unhappy. "Leah is so dumb, she wouldn’t know she’s being fooled."
...
"I’m not dumb!" Leah stood with her arms akimbo as she said, "Our teacher said that I’m already very intelligent, it’s just that you’re too intelligent. She has let you skip a grade, so why aren’t you going straight to first grade?"
Leah thought that if Jake were to go on to first grade, she could finally have some peace in school. Then, she would play with whoever she wanted to.
"What’s there to learn in the first grade? I’ve already learnt everything." Jake said, "That’s not important to me, I self-study anyway. But you, on the other hand... if I don’t keep an eye on you, you might just run off with some boy."
"I will not," Leah mumbled.
"Why is it so lively today?" Michael heard Jake and Leah talking the moment he opened the door. Seeing that her husband had come home, Wendy smiled and asked, "So early today?"
"Nothing important at work, so I’m back earlier," Michael said. In reality, he was worried about Wendy and wanted to come home earlier to keep her company.
"What are y’all talking about?" Michael sat beside Wendy and looking at the fruit on the table. He casually fed Wendy a piece and then took another one for himself.
"Your children have found their soulmates at school," Wendy smiled as she teased the kids.
"Mommy, what’re you saying." Jake instantly rebutted, "I’m not interested in anyone."
"Soulmates?" Michael looked at Jake and Leah and asked, "There’s someone you like? Or is that there someone who likes you?"
"Daddy, don’t listen to Mommy." Jake’s face darkened as he said, "Girls are the most troublesome, if it weren’t for protecting Leah, I wouldn’t even want to go to school."
Jake was intelligent and good-looking, so the little children all liked him very much. It was a shame that Jake was cold and blunt. When other little girls gave him presents, he would reject them directly. There were quite a few little girls who had cried because of him.
Jake did not like seeing those boys giving Leah little presents either. He would chase them away.
"I’m going back to my room to read." Jake obviously did not want to talk about this anymore. He turned and left.
"What did Mark do to you? Do you know what his family does? Does he look good?"
Wendy was particular about physical appearance. It was important to her whether one was good-looking.
"Mark is very good to me. He’d bring me food every day. But he can only give it to me sneakily. Because when Jake sees it, he’ll return it to him or throw it into the bin." Leah answered Wendy’s question very seriously, "I don’t know what his family does, I’ll go ask him tomorrow. As for how he looks... I feel that he’s pretty cute."
Hearing Wendy ask all these questions, Michael reached out to flick her head and smiled as he said, "Are you starting to investigate this potential boyfriend? If you want to know, just take a look when fetching Leah tomorrow."
"Tomorrow is Saturday..." Wendy said.
"Speaking of which, are we going back to visit Grandma this week?" Michael asked.
"No." Wendy’s face suddenly darkened. She touched her tummy and said, "Another one or two weeks maybe, when I’m ready."
Michael knew that Wendy needed some time to internalize the fact about the child in her tummy.
"Sure." Michael reached an arm out around Wendy’s shoulder, pulling her into his embrace, "Then let’s go back another time. Till then, when Grandma knows that you’re pregnant, she’ll definitely be very happy."
"Mommy, when you come to fetch us the next time, I’ll introduce Mark to you," Leah said smilingly.
"Sure." Wendy did not know how to react. They were done talking about this topic, yet Leah was still hung up on it.
