Chapter 403: She Was Being Played With Again

Hearing Michael’s words, Wendy lowered her head slightly but kept mum.

Michael knew that Wendy was silently urging him to continue, so he immediately said, "Now I know that you still care about me. Wendy, the concern you have for me in your eyes can’t lie. Since you still have feelings for me, can you give me another chance?"

Wendy bit her lip as she kept silent for quite a long while.

"I know I did many bad things to you previously. I shouldn’t have lied to you by saying that it was for your own good, and I shouldn’t have gone to Rheinsville City to look for you so rashly. I promise I won’t lie to you ever again, and I will do my best to treat you well for the rest of my life. And I will only treat you well."

"We’re at the hospital." Wendy saw that the car had already stopped and the entrance to the hospital was there.

Hearing Wendy’s words, Michael turned around to look out the window and realized they had arrived.

His face fell as he looked at the driver sitting in front with annoyance.

This driver was not observant at all.

Couldn’t he have driven slower at such a crucial moment?

Maybe Wendy would have agreed in a while.

Wendy had already opened the car door to get out of the car, and she stretched her hand out, planning to help Michael out.

But after thinking about it, Michael injured his arm and not his leg, so he didn’t need someone to help him out.

At the mansion, Wendy had forgotten about it as her worry overwhelmed her.

Now, she retracted her hand and said, "Get out of the car."

Michael had already prepared to hold Wendy’s hand after seeing her outstretched hand.

But before he had even touched her hand, she had retracted it.

"Ouch, my injuries hurt too much. I don’t think I can get out of the car by myself," Michael said.

Hearing this, the driver immediately walked around the car and offered politely, "Let me help you, Mr. Lucas."

Hearing the driver’s words, Michael couldn’t control his expression anymore.

Was this driver really working for their family?

Was he really not a spy sent by Christian?

"Mr. Lucas?" The driver asked as Michael still hadn’t taken up his offer of help.

"No need. I can do it myself," Michael replied angrily to the driver.

At the next moment, the driver saw Michael getting out of the car by himself.

Wendy didn’t utter a single word as she walked in front of them.

"Wendy, why don’t you help me?" Since the driver wasn’t sensible enough, Michael could only ask it himself.

But unfortunately for him, Wendy wasn’t going to play along as she said, "You didn’t hurt your legs, so there’s no need for me to help you."

"I... " Michael was speechless.

Wendy brought Michael into the hospital.

They knew Milo Lawrence, so they just contacted him straight away.

It just so happened that Milo didn’t have any operations at that moment, so he helped Michael handle his wounds.

Seeing Michael’s injuries, Milo frowned as he asked, "Your mother didn’t do this to you, right?"

Milo knew that Winnie was not mentally stable.

There was no one else who would dare to injure Michael so outrightly.

Of course, it might also be Wendy.

But since Wendy brought Michael here, it probably wasn’t her.

Michael let out a soft hum of agreement.

Milo checked his wound before saying, "The wound is a little deep, but thankfully it got handled in time, so you didn’t lose too much blood. Who did it?"

"My wife handled it." Michael was proud when he said that.

Hearing that, Milo raised his head to glance at Wendy.

...

Wendy coughed awkwardly and tried to dissociate herself, "Don’t spout nonsense.

We are not related at all. At most, I am just your ex-wife."

"It’s okay. Milo is one of us." Michael knew Wendy had said that on purpose. But with his comment, he made it more awkward for her to deny the fact.

"I ..."

Wendy wanted to explain herself further but Milo simply laughed and praised her instead. "I see that you handled the wound very well. You’ve learnt first-aid before?"

"I’m self-taught. I just did a simple clean-up," Wendy replied to him.

"You did quite well, given the fact that you are not medically trained," Milo commented as he took care of Michael’s wound.

What Wendy did at that moment was stop the bleeding and clean it with an antiseptic solution. Milo still had to clean it again before stitching it up.

"I’m going to stitch up your wound now. But I don’t have enough anesthetic here. Do you think you can handle without it?" Milo intentionally made the remark.

"Milo, you are doing this on purpose right?" Michael said with a serious look. "Are you telling me, in this big hospital, you don’t have enough anesthetic? I’ve donate so much money to this hospital and you cannot afford to buy anesthetic?"

"You are a patient now. I am not asking you. I am asking your wife." Milo turned to Wendy and asked, "What do you think, Wendy? Should I or should I not give him anesthetic? If you say no, I will just stitch him up. Don’t worry, such basic stitching work can be done quickly or slowly. Tell me how long you want it to take and I will do it."

By this time, Michael understood Milo’s intention. His IQ, as compared to the driver just now, was definitely higher.

Wendy coughed awkwardly again. She was at a loss at how to reply to Milo’s question. Michael’s wound was quite deep. If, out of spite, she said no to giving him anesthetic, he would have to bear with the pain throughout the stitching. But she was not ready to forgive him yet. If she agreed to the anaesthetic, Michael might misunderstand that as her softening her heart and still having feelings for him.

Milo’s question really put her in a difficult position.

"You are the doctor. Do as you deem fit." Wendy decided to answer the question in an indirect way.

"All right then, I think it is better to not use anesthetic." Milo said with a straight face, "Although Michael’s wound is quite long and deep, it will probably require 8-10 stitches but I think he will survive. At most, he will just be knocked out by the pain. If he faints, he will not be able to feel anything. It essentially has the same effect as the anesthetic."

Wendy knew that what he said was meant for her. She might not be so familiar with Milo but something told her that he would do exactly what he said he would.

By now, Michael was shaking his head at her, "Wendy, please don’t let him do whatever he wants. The stitching is going to hurt terribly without the anesthetic!"

"Dr. Lawrence is the doctor here. Whatever he decides will be the best for you."

Wendy decided to put the ball in Milo’s courts.

"Ok, then just as I said, no anesthetic," Milo smiled at Wendy and picked up the needle. He continued, "I won’t stop until you tell me to."

"Are you serious?" Michael stared at Milo who seemed serious about skipping the anesthetic.

He knew Milo was trying to help him. But to do this, wasn’t it too much? Ha. Now, where was the courageous Mr. Lucas who criticized others for having low IQs?

...

"I am the head surgeon here. I am always serious about what I say," Milo’s smile deepened. Milo’s looks made Michael very uneasy.

"Milo, you are taking advantage of the situation to take revenge on me, right?"

Michael swallowed, his voice sounding fearful. "You mean you are still upset about what happened when we were young? So many years have passed. Surely you don’t need to bear grudges for so long?"

It was true that Milo was always bullied by Michael when they were young. They were the same age and they were in the same class. Milo was speaking respectfully to Wendy simply because Michael was a few months older than him. After graduating from high school, Michael stayed in the country while Milo went overseas to study medicine.

"Of course I am not the type to bear grudges," Milo replied. "I am just thinking about this from a doctor’s perspective. It is not good to have too many chemicals in our body. Anesthetic is also a type of chemical. Based on your physical condition, I am sure you are able to handle the pain." Milo turned to Wendy again and confirmed, "Am I right, Wendy?"

Wendy nodded her head. She was so uncomfortable that she wanted to leave them alone. Milo saw her expression and went silent. He held the surgical needle in his hand and was about to start his stitching.

"Wendy! You cannot be so heartless! I know I’ve done wrong by you but you cannot conspire with Milo to torture me. Who can possibly stand the pain of stitching without anesthetic?" Michael was so afraid that he screamed out.

To be honest, Wendy also couldn’t bear to see him suffer through the pain. From the way Milo looked, he seemed as if he was really going to start stitching the wound.

She felt like it was a little cruel to let him go ahead without giving Michael the anesthetic. But she also knew that it was a trap set by Milo and Michael.

"Ow!" Michael screamed out in pain. Wendy took another look and she saw that the needle was already on Michael’s flesh.

"Stop!" Wendy shouted out of instinct. Wendy swallowed hard as she saw Michael in pain. Initially, she didn’t want to bother with him, but she couldn’t see him in pain and not do anything. Forget it! She couldn’t care about anything else anymore.

Milo was very cooperative and he stopped on her command. He raised his eyebrow at Michael with a smile of victory. Before he started stitching, he had already given Michael a knowing look. Being friends for so many years, Michael naturally understood what he meant.

That was why he purposely screamed so loud. Maybe not so purposely since Milo actually poked him with the needle, but it was just a gentle scrape on his skin. From where Wendy was standing, she couldn’t see clearly. She only knew that the needle was on his flesh. But really, the stitching hadn’t even begun. All of that had just been a show for Wendy.

"Why did you ask me to stop so quickly?" Milo asked. "I was still thinking you would wait until Michael had fainted."

Wendy’s heart skipped a beat. She took a deep breath to calm herself down. "I think it is better to give him the anesthetic first," she said.

"Sure! Your wish is my command." Milo turned aside to pick up the anesthetic.

Actually it was just a simple procedure and he only needed to numb the area. Wendy finally heaved a sigh of relief when she saw Milo expertly handle the wound.

"Thank you, Wendy," Michael said looking up at her. "I knew it. You still care for me," he smiled as he spoke.

"Stop your nonsense," Wendy snapped. She was irritated to see his smile. She was being played with again. Even so, she could only resign to that fact. Michael’s cut was quite serious. It was better to deal with his wounds properly first. Milo’s medical skills were superb. Very soon, he was done stitching.

After cutting off the thread, Milo stood up and dramatically announced, "I am done!

Come back five days later to remove the thread. Refrain from using your left hand.

Try not to get it wet. It’s a good thing that the bone is still intact. As long as the wound doesn’t get infected, he should recover very soon."

"What about that?" Wendy pointed to Michael’s finger. "Aren’t you going to do something about that?"

"Oh yes, there is still the finger." Milo already noticed it but he wanted Wendy to point it out to him. He laughed and knocked himself on the head, "How could I possible have overlooked that? Here, Mr. Lucas, let me help you with your finger."

Michael was grinning from ear to ear after hearing their conversation. He cooperatively stretched out his hand. Very quickly, Michael’s finger was bandaged up. Seeing bandages all over his left hand made Wendy want to laugh and scream at the same time.

But she also felt a little... heartache.

Milo looked at the time and remarked, "I have another surgery so I have to leave first. You can stay in the office for as long as you want. Don’t worry. It is safe here."

Milo was not involved in the business world as they were but he knew what was going on between Michael and Christian. And when Michael got frustrated, he would also ask Milo out for a drink. Of course, that was very rare because he was simply too busy. So Milo vaguely knew what had transpired between Michael and Wendy.

He emphasised that it was safe in his office because he wanted them to know that no one would be watching them here. They could be free to do or say what they wanted.

The moment Milo left, Wendy felt the awkwardness in the air. "How are you feeling?"

Wendy asked, looking at Michael’s wound.

"I’m okay. It is not painful at all." Michael wanted to prove his point by lifting his hand, but he barely held it up when a wave of pain hit him.

Wendy immediately reached out to help him. "Your wounds just got treated. Stop moving around," she scolded him. "You don’t want your hand anymore?"

"Wendy..." Seeing her being so concerned for him, he placed his right hand over hers and held it. "Wendy, since it is safe here, shall we have a good talk?" he asked with a tender voice.

Wendy knew what he wanted to talk about. Pressing her lips together, she replied, "Let me call your grandmother first. She must be so worried about you."

She took out her phone and dialed Mrs. Lucas’s number. She picked up as soon as the phone rang since she had been waiting for the call.

"How is Michael?" His grandmother asked anxiously.

"Don’t worry, Mrs. Lucas. The wound has been treated and the doctor said nothing else was hurt. He just needs to rest for a few days," Wendy reported. "Please put your mind at ease."

"That’s good to hear." Wendy could hear a sigh of relief on the other side of the line.

"Will you be coming back with Michael later? I will inform the cook to make your favorite dishes. Come back for dinner."

"I think not. I still have some matters to settle. I will come and visit you another time," Wendy quickly rejected her. She was afraid that she would give in if they continued the conversation. "Please take good care of yourself, Mrs. Lucas.

Goodbye."
