Chapter 343: Perfect For Each Other
Jake and Leah had returned to the kindergarten and Wendy had gone back to work. She had just finished breakfast and was leaving with the children.
Zen lay sideways on the bed sending Christian text messages.
Christian had demanded her to text him daily.
Zen could not help but feel sad. She was in love with him, but he only ever contacted her to ask about some other woman. However, it was better than not having any contact with him.
If not for Wendy, Christian would probably not want to have anything to do with Zen.
Zen laughed sadly as she contemplated.
Kindergarten had started for Jake and Leah. Wendy had just left for work. She had not heard from Michael as of late, but Todd had visited regularly. Todd basically took her to and from work every day.
Zen composed a text message, went through it, and sent it after checking it.
Christian rarely replied to Zen’s text messages and simply reached out to her to find out how Wendy was doing.
Zen was not expecting Christian to reply to her this time either.
After sending the text messages, she sighed imperceptibly before tossing her phone aside.
However, she surprisingly heard a text notification on her phone. Zen promptly picked up her phone to check it and saw a text message from Christian. She happily tapped on the message, but the contents of the text immediately made her smile disappear.
Sure enough, Christian was asking about Wendy.
Zen’s hand trembled slightly. After some time, she finally acknowledged Christian.
Zen stayed home with nothing to do. At 4:00 PM, Zess was getting ready to leave home when Zen finally asked, "Zess, are you going out to pick up the kids?"
Zess nodded. "Uh huh. School is almost out."
"Let me pick them up," said Zen as she smiled. "I don’t have anything to do at home anyway. Why don’t I take a walk and pick them up?"
"Erm..." Zess felt a little hesitant. "You don’t even know where the school is. I think I should go get them."
She was always the one in charge of picking the kids up.
"I am sure it is nearby, right?" Zen continued, "Although I have never been there, I often hear you talking about it. I recall it is just a ten minute walk from here, right? If you tell me the address, I am sure I can get there."
"Why don’t we go together?" Zess said, "If you get there too late, the kids will probably get upset that no one is there for them."
"Sure thing," replied Zen. "Just show me the way once, and I will remember it."
Jake and Leah were surprised to see Zen come to pick them up along with Zess.
Leah was oblivious of Zen’s intentions and innocently liked her. She had always played with Leah at home.
"Zen, why are you here?" asked Leah as she happily ran up to Zen and looked up at her.
"I am here to pick you up of course..." Zen reached her hand out to take Leah’s school bag as she said, "Let me help you with your bag."
"Thanks, Zen," said Leah as she smiled sweetly at her.
Zen automatically touched her belly as she looked at Jake and Leah.
She wondered if the baby she was having with Christian would end up as adorable as Wendy and Michael’s kids.
Zen felt she probably would not have the fortune of having twins like them.
As long as it was Christian’s kid, she would love it regardless of its gender.
Sadly, she could not say the same for Christian. Regardless of the baby’s gender, he probably would not like it. Zen could not help but feel sad thinking about this.
....
Wendy came home at night and felt a little tired after a long day at work. She seemed tired even while having dinner.
Jake and Leah were pure little angels. They kept taking food for Wendy and even suggested massaging her shoulders and legs after dinner.
Zen smiled enviously as she said, "Wendy, I am so jealous of you. Look at how cute and filial the kids are."
"You don’t have to be jealous. You will be giving birth soon yourself," said Wendy.
Zen was genuinely envious of Wendy. She thought about the text message she had received from Christian earlier today and quietly put down her chopsticks and retrieved her phone.
She looked at her phone screen nonchalantly and pretended to play with her phone as she secretly turned on the camera and proceeded to click the shutter button.
Christian had demanded a picture of Wendy today.
Zen had been stunned when she received this text from him. Christian had shockingly made such a childish request.
Despite this immature request, Christian clearly cared about Wendy a lot.
Zen was incapable of remaining entirely unaffected, but she had to do it.
Unfortunately, Zen forgot to deactivate the flash on her phone when she took the picture.
Wendy frowned when the camera suddenly flashed in her face.
Zen looked at Wendy awkwardly and Wendy looked back at her quizzically. She kept trying to come up with an excuse before she finally smiled and said, "You and the kids look so blissful that I could not resist taking a picture for you."
Even though Zen had come up with a legitimate reason for taking the photo, Wendy frowned even harder when she heard it.
However, Wendy said nothing and simply smiled mildly.
Zen put away her phone awkwardly before she pretended nothing happened as she asked, "Oh yes. Wendy, how is work going for you? Is it very tiring?"
It was the first time Zen ever asked Wendy about work so candidly.
Considering Zen and Wendy’s current relationship, it was inappropriate for Zen to ask about work.
Zen simply asked at Christian’s request.
Christian wanted Zen to find some way to continue staying with Wendy. He did not care if it meant she had to work as Wendy’s designer or assistant.
Zen knew that Christian was merely trying to find a way to ensure she could keep an eye on Wendy’s every move without fail.
It probably would be quite difficult for Zen to continue staying close to Wendy on the pretext of work given their relationship now.
"It is okay. I am already used to work," replied Wendy with her head lowered. She had an inkling Zen was not simply asking about work.
There was probably more to Zen’s question.
Sure enough, Zen continued saying, "I am bored to my wits end sitting around at home, so I really want to find something to pass time. Have you had any openings recently? I don’t really have to be a designer. I will take the job even if it is just an assistant’s role."
Wendy raised her head, put down her chopsticks, and scrutinized Zen before she smiled slightly and said, "What about your pregnancy? How could you think about working now? You are only three months into the pregnancy, it’s a crucial period."
"I have been staying at your place for some time now. Zess refuses to even let me lift a finger and do any chores at all," said Zen sincerely. "You know that I am a workaholic, and I am used to having a fast-paced life. Now that I am stuck at home day in and day out, I cannot help feeling uncomfortable. I think the baby will turn out fine. I see a lot of pregnant women working until right before they’re due. Also, the baby hasn’t been giving me a hard time. I recall Jill used to be your assistant, right? Now that she has left, I am sure you are in need of a new assistant, right?"
"Jill was only my temporary assistant to begin with." Wendy scrutinized Zen as she spoke, "She is my mentor’s daughter and he asked me to train her. I always had a full-time assistant at HG Enterprise."
"In that case..." Zen did not dare to continue looking at Wendy’s eyes. She lowered her head slightly as she said, "I don’t mind working as a designer or even just a design intern."
"Zen, you previously worked as the design director for the DR Group. Are you sure you want to work as a design intern with me? Are you serious?"
Zen’s request clearly made no sense at all.
Wendy had already repeatedly made Zen offers to leave the DR Group to work with her. However, Zen had been unwilling to leave the DR Group.
One of the reasons for Zen’s reluctance was Christian. She had also been a proud woman and could not bring herself to work for Wendy. Yet here she was offering to be a lowly assistant and design intern.
If Christian was not the man behind HG Enterprise, Wendy would definitely have suspected Zen to be sent by Christian to keep an eye on her.
Now that Wendy knew Christian was the owner of HG Enterprise, she knew Christian could get to know everything about her without planting a spy.
Then why did Zen want to work with her?
Wendy felt a little puzzled.
No matter what, Zen was lying about getting a job so that she could kill time.
Zen blinked when she heard what Wendy said. She replied somewhat sheepishly, "That was all in the past. I have already stopped working for the DR Group."
Zen reached her hand out and held Wendy’s as she said, "Wendy, didn’t you say you had a job waiting for me whenever I wanted?"
Wendy had made the offer, but that was all in the past.
Back then, Wendy and Zen were still friends and nothing had occurred to taint their relationship.
Also, Wendy was still working for MC Enterprise at that point in time.
"I will check around and see if there are any openings in the company tomorrow." Wendy picked up her chopsticks and served some food for Zen as she said, "Eat up."
In reality, she was saying no to Zen’s request.
Wendy was already the head of HG Enterprise’s design department.
If she wanted to hire a new design intern, she certainly did not need to seek permission from anyone else.
However, Zen could not come off looking too anxious.
Zen contemplated and felt that she should revisit this topic a few days later.
"Oh yes, Mummy. Zen and Zess both came to pick Jake and me up from school today." Leah giggled as she said, "Zen even helped me carry my school bag earlier."
"Really?" Wendy smiled as she touched her tiny head and said, "Zen is pregnant, so you can’t get her to do any heavy lifting for you, got it?"
"Zen offered to do it on her own. I didn’t ask her to," Leah explained hurriedly.
"That’s right. I offered to do it," said Zen as she smiled.
Zen went on with the subject of getting a job. "I was simply bored to my wits end staying at home. I just wanted to do something, even if it was just going out on a walk."
"From the looks of it, you certainly seem bored from staying at home." Wendy took some vegetables, put them in her mouth, and started chewing on them slowly.
"That goes without saying." Zen laughed.
With that, the subject ended.
After dinner, Zen helped to put the cutlery away.
Wendy sat on the couch as the children massaged her shoulders obediently.
Zess glanced at Wendy and the children.
Wendy got the kids washed up after dinner.
Once the children had fallen asleep, she washed up and prepared to go to bed.
Zess glanced at Zen’s tightly shut door before she walked up to Wendy and said softly, "Wendy, there is something I need to tell you."
Wendy frowned and nodded when she noticed the wary look on Zess’ face.
Wendy and Zess entered her room to talk.
Zess closed the door and said, "Zen offered to pick the children up on her own before I ended up going with her. Since you have told me to keep an eye on her, I did not let her go on her own."
Wendy had in fact told Zess to keep an eye on Zen’s every move when she was home and to let her know the moment she noticed anything amiss.
Since Wendy knew Zen was sent by Christian, she had to be careful.
Wendy did not detect anything amiss when Leah said Zen had picked them up today.
Now that Wendy had learned from Zess of Zen’s initial intention to pick them up on her own, Wendy had to play it safe regardless of her feelings towards Zen.
Wendy pursed her lips as she lowered her head and pondered.
"Wendy, is there anything wrong with Zen?" asked Zess.
Wendy shook her head and spoke candidly, "I don’t know for now either, so I need to think about what to do with her."
"In that case, why don’t you have an early night. I will leave you to it," said Zess before opening the door to leave.
Wendy lay on the bed with her eyes open and stared at the ceiling.
If Zen did not join HG Enterprise, she would end up spending all her time at home.
Since the children got off school rather early, Zen naturally had a lot of time with them.
Although Wendy felt it was unlikely for Zen to do anything to the kids, it was better to be safe than sorry.
From the looks of it, Wendy’s best bet would be to give Zen a job in the company and have her work with her.
Even if Zen wanted to spy on Wendy’s every move, Wendy would also be able to keep an eye on Zen.
Also, Wendy would be Zen’s superior at HG Enterprise and it will be easier for Wendy to control her.
Since Zen had been sent by Christian, Wendy could use the same trick on them.
Now that Wendy had just refused Zen a job over dinner, she was not about to give in right away. However, Wendy could not keep this up for long. She was very worried about Zen’s ulterior motives for staying at her place.
She contemplated before deciding to talk to Zen about giving her a job the day after. Perhaps Wendy would not have to broach the subject and Zen would beat her to it.
Zen went back to her room after dinner and sent the pictures to Christian.
Christian felt happy when he saw Wendy’s face in the picture. But was instantly annoyed the moment he caught sight of the twins. He turned on his computer and uploaded the picture to crop the kids out of the image. Now that only Wendy remained in the picture, Christian was finally able to smile.
Christian rapped his fingers on the table gently as he looked at the computer monitor and spoke sinisterly, "Wendy, we are perfect for each other. Look at how well you are doing at HG Enterprise. Our partnership will give us the greatest edge.
"Just you wait. In no time, we will defeat Michael hand in hand. When the time comes, I will celebrate his downfall with you. I hope you won’t be too shocked when you find out."
