Chapter 277: He’s My Son
"Mommy, I’m so glad you’re home," Leah said as she smiled, wiping tears off her face with her hands. She reached out her short arms to hug Wendy.
"Let me have a look at that first. I want to see how bad the fall was." Wendy wanted to pull Leah aside to check her wound.
But Leah refused to let go of her.
Leah shook her head. "No, no, no. If I let go, you will be gone before I know it."
"How could I be gone?" Wendy gently replied as she smiled and patted Leah’s little head.
From the looks of it, she was probably not badly hurt.
Zess could not help but smile as she looked on. Wendy said, "Mind bringing the medical kit over? I want to clean and dress her wound."
Leah was not badly hurt. All she got were some minor abrasions and slight bleeding.
The wound just needed some disinfecting and an adhesive bandage.
Zess promptly left to get the first-aid kit.
Leah sniffled, "I always dream about Mommy coming home, but the moment I open my eyes, you’re gone, so I don’t dare to let go."
Wendy smiled and felt bad about it.
She carried Leah and walked over to the couch to take a seat.
Jake helped Wendy put away her luggage.
Wendy moved closer to Leah and said, "Why don’t you pinch me and see if I’m real?"
Leah raised her hand, then put it down hesitantly.
"Go ahead and pinch me." Wendy noticed Leah pulling her hand back, so she immediately held it and put it on her face.
Leah felt something warm on her hand and smiled. "Mommy, you’re hot."
Wendy thought something was wrong with the way Leah worded her sentence.
However, Wendy simply smiled when she saw Leah beaming.
Jake came back with a glass of water for Wendy. "Mommy, have some water."
"Thanks, Jake." Wendy took the glass from Jake. She felt bad when she saw how sensible he was.
"Mommy, let me massage your legs." Leah got off Wendy. Even though her little hands were not strong enough, she did her best to massage Wendy’s legs.
After massaging Wendy for a while, she asked, "How did that feel, Mommy?"
"It was great." Wendy reached out to pat Leah’s head.
Zess came back with the medical kit. Wendy coaxed Leah to the couch and said,
"Let me take care of your wound first."
Leah nodded.
"It will hurt a little. You have to bear with it, okay?" Wendy frowned. She knew that Leah had a low tolerance to pain.
"Mommy, I’m not afraid." Leah bit her lip and was in pain, but she did not cry.
Wendy felt her heart ache to see Leah like that.
After cleaning the wound, Wendy applied an adhesive bandage to it.
Before Zess put away the medical kit, she said, "Wendy, I suppose you haven’t eaten. I just cooked lunch. Why don’t you eat first?"
Zess had only cooked for three, so she suggested, "Why don’t you start with the kids first? I will whip up a couple more dishes."
Zess then went back to the kitchen.
Wendy brought the kids to the dining table and sat down.
Before long, the children filled Wendy’s bowl with a lot of food.
"Eat up guys." Wendy was glad to spend time with her children again.
....
Zess had only cooked lunch for three earlier, but it was enough even with Wendy around.
However, Zess was in a good mood and wanted to cook more since she was happy to see Wendy back.
Leah raised her head to look at Wendy repeatedly over dinner. It seemed as though she was afraid Wendy might leave at any moment.
She swallowed the food in her mouth and asked Wendy, "Mommy, are you staying here for good now that you are back?"
Leah’s question made the lively atmosphere feel a little serious.
Wendy was quiet for a while.
Jake immediately said to Leah, "Mommy is busy working in Rheinsville City, so she can’t visit often. After she is done with her work, she’ll come back and stay with us for good."
Leah was disappointed at her brother’s explanation. "Fine."
The atmosphere was a bit serious until Leah asked again, "Mommy, how long are you staying this time?"
"I’m going back to Rheinsville City tomorrow," Wendy said sadly.
"So soon?" The smile on Leah’s face disappeared as she muttered softly, "I thought you might stay a bit longer so we could spend some time together."
"Mommy already did her best to come home this time, so you should be happy."
Jake smiled and put more food in Leah’s bowl. "The sooner Mommy goes back to Rheinsville City and finishes her work, the sooner she can come home to be with us, right, Leah?"
"I know." Leah nodded, but she was still sad.
No one spoke after that, busying themselves with the food.
"This is your favorite," Zess said excitedly, bringing more food to the table before she announced that she would make one more dish, but Wendy stopped her.
"Zess, stop cooking already." Wendy pointed at the empty seat at the dining table as she said, "Join us. I still have to go somewhere later."
"Okay." Zess took the apron off and sat down at the dining table.
After lunch, Wendy washed up and did her makeup. She picked out a nice dress and got changed.
She wanted to visit Michael in the office.
Leah immediately ran over to Wendy as she was about to leave the house. "Mommy,
where are you going? Can you take me with you?"
"I’m going to see your father." Wendy held Leah’s hand as she smiled and said,
"Let’s go together."
Wendy thought Michael would be very surprised and happy to see her come over with the kids, so the three of them went over to MC Enterprise.
Wendy drove, and she could hear Leah and Jake whispering in the backseat.
"Jake, aren’t we going to tell Mommy about Daddy?" Leah asked, looking expectantly at Jake.
Jake put on a serious face and did not know what to do.
"Let’s not talk about it just yet since Mommy is visiting Daddy later."
"What are you talking about back there?" Wendy asked when she could not make out what they were talking about.
"Nothing. You will find out later," Leah replied with a smile.
This made Wendy even more curious.
Since they were just children, it did not cross Wendy’s mind that they could be talking about something serious.
Also, Leah said she would find out soon enough, so Wendy reckoned it must have something to do with Michael.
To begin with, Wendy came home because they were unable to go to Rheinsville City.
Wendy then focused on driving and stopped questioning the kids.
....
Sadly, Wendy did not find Michael at MC Enterprise.
Since Michael was not at the office, Wendy had no reason to linger there.
She took out her phone to call Michael and find out where he was.
Wendy hesitated before she decided against it.
She was here to surprise Michael. If she called him, then the surprise would be ruined.
Just as Wendy was wondering what to do, Jake tugged the corner of her shirt and said, "Mommy, Daddy might be at the mansion."
"The mansion?" Wendy frowned.
It was barely 1 PM. What was he doing at the mansion?
Jake nodded and said, "I’m just guessing. I don’t know for sure."
Jake quickly added, "I just think he’s probably there."
Wendy figured her son was probably right.
She nodded and said, "In that case, let’s go to the mansion."
Even if Michael was not around, Wendy could visit her grandmother.
She had not seen her grandmother in ages.
Wendy asked Jake while in the car, "How did you know he’s there? Did Daddy tell you about it?"
"I...," Jake began hesitantly. "Just a guess."
Jake then giggled. "If Daddy isn’t at the office at this hour, he must be at the mansion."
Although there was nothing suspicious with what Jake said, Wendy found it strange.
"Jake, did something happen at home?" Wendy frowned. She wanted to ask Michael about it directly, but she could not resist asking Jake.
"Nothing serious happened." Jake sighed. "Mommy, why don’t you ask Daddy yourself when you see him? Maybe you will find out when you see him later."
The more Jake avoided giving direct answers to Wendy, the more Wendy felt worried.
Before long, the car arrived at the mansion.
After Wendy parked the car, the kids got off by themselves.
Jake announced, "Mommy, let me go check if Daddy is around."
Jake then ran off as Wendy took Leah by the hand and chased after him.
The moment Jake ran into the living room, a staff caught sight of him and smiled as he asked, "Jake, what brings you here?"
The staff looked around and noticed he was alone. "Did you come by yourself?"
"Is Daddy around?" Jake asked.
"Yes, he’s in the dining room." Jake frowned.
It was already past 2 PM. What were they doing in the dining room?
Had they only just started to have lunch?
Jake thanked the staff before heading to the dining room.
"Jake?" Michael clearly looked surprised to see Jake here. He waved his hand and gestured for Jake to come over to him. "Why are you here?"
Jake looked angry when he saw the people sitting at the dining table.
Along with Michael were Winnie and Yonina.
Jake had seen Yonina before, so he was familiar with her.
He knew that Winnie had always wanted Michael and Yonina to be together.
He was annoyed to see her around.
"Daddy, what are you doing here?" Jake asked casually, trying to suppress his anger.
"I..." Since Michael knew his son was smart, he didn’t try to come up with a lame excuse. He told him the truth, "Mom told me to come here."
Michael did not expect to see Yonina when he got there.
He had already made it very clear to Winnie that he could not be with Yonina.
However, Winnie refused to take no for an answer.
"Why are you running all over the place?" Winnie shouted at the staff outside. "Take him away now."
"Mom!" Michael yelled back. "He’s my son!"
