Chapter 271: Take You Somewhere
Wendy regained consciousness more than two hours later.
Todd was still by her side.
When he saw her open her eyes, he walked over to help her sit up and even brought her an additional pillow to make her feel more comfortable.
"Where’s Michael and the children? Are they here yet?" she asked anxiously.
He sighed and smiled a little sadly. "I just knew your first question would be about them."
She ignored his remark and asked, "Still no news of them?"
"You’re the one who fainted, so why can’t you think of yourself first?" he replied.
"Corrine, it’s the second time you’ve fainted."
"I..." Wendy looked down and said, "I suppose my blood sugar levels were low."
She had guessed as much when she saw the drip bag hanging next to her.
She had gone out without breakfast and waited in the airport anxiously until noon.
After that, she had gotten into Todd’s car with the intention of going home to grab her passport and fly again. She hadn’t taken any food or water the whole day.
Then she suddenly remembered something and grabbed her phone to check the time, only to find that it wasn’t turned on.
Her first thought was that it had run out of battery, so she pressed down on the power button and was surprised that the phone turned on and the battery was at 40 percent. So the phone didn’t turn off from having insufficient battery.
She looked up at Todd, puzzled, but didn’t ask if he was the one who turned it off.
After she checked the time, she suddenly said in a louder voice, "Ah! I’ve missed the flight."
She had booked a 2 PM flight, but it was nearly 4 PM now.
As she spoke, she opened her browser and intended to book another ticket. She didn’t even look up as she said to Todd, "You don’t have to go to Lake City with me. I can go by myself."
He snatched the phone away from her and looked at her straight in the eye. "The doctor says your blood sugar levels are low and your body isn’t in good shape."
His voice sounded a little angry now. "Corrine, can’t you be a little more concerned about yourself for once?"
"I..." Her head was full of nothing but Michael and her two children, so she tried her best to look strong and said, "I’m fine. I know my own body the best."
She even smiled in the hopes of assuring him.
"Pass the phone back to me. I’ll try calling Michael again. He might have turned his phone on by now," she said.
He returned the phone to her, but before she could make the call, he said, "Michael is fine."
"He’s fine?" She looked up at him, wondering if he was just saying this to console her.
"When you were unconscious, he called and I took the call for you."
She immediately started looking through her call records.
"His phone is broken, so he used another number to call." Todd was angry with Michael, but he didn’t want to hide this from Wendy and make her continue to worry. "It’s the first number on your list of received calls."
She was already looking at that list.
The first number was indeed a number registered in Lake City. The call wasn’t too long, just four minutes and 20 seconds long.
"Michael said that something came up on his end, his phone broke, and he was very busy, so he didn’t manage to call you earlier," Todd explained honestly. "So don’t worry anymore and just rest while you finish up this drip bag."
Wendy breathed a huge sigh of relief. She was so glad that they were alright.
....
After Wendy finished up that drip bag, she felt a lot better. She had fainted because she hadn’t been eating properly recently and her blood sugar levels were low.
Todd wanted her to stay in the hospital for a couple more days just in case. "Why are you in such a hurry to be discharged? Aren’t you on leave today? Since Michael and the kids aren’t coming, why don’t you just rest in the hospital for the day?"
"It’s my birthday today, after all. It’s so awful to spend your birthday in a hospital," Wendy replied with a smile. "Besides, the doctor said that I was just suffering from low blood sugar levels and everything else is fine."
"That’s not the point," Todd countered unhappily and frowned. "You’ve already fainted twice in a month. That’s not a good sign."
The doctor came round to check on her since she was done with the drip.
Todd asked the doctor, "How’s Corrine’s condition? Does she need to be hospitalized?"
Then he turned to Wendy and said, "If the doctor says you have to stay, then you have to stay, you hear me?"
He had thrown that statement just in case she insisted on getting discharged anyway.
Before she could say anything, the doctor said, "The hospital does not require Miss Swift to be hospitalized for her condition. Her blood sugar levels were low and she’s overworked, so it’s not necessary to stay in the hospital. But she should eat more balanced meals and sleep more at night."
After she heard the doctor say she didn’t need to be hospitalized, she breathed a sigh of relief and said to Todd, "You heard that? I don’t have to be hospitalized."
Since the doctor confirmed that she’s not in danger, Todd had no choice but to agree to get her discharged. He signed the discharge papers and walked out of the hospital with her.
Wendy’s mind was still filled with what happened to Michael even after getting into Todd’s car.
Todd said that Michael’s phone was broken, so even if she called him now, she probably wouldn’t be able to get to him either.
She hesitated for a while before asking Todd, "Michael didn’t say exactly what happened?"
"He didn’t elaborate, just said something came up." Todd glanced at the time. It was already 6 PM.
Since Michael and the kids didn’t come and Wendy had missed her flight, he was going to proceed with his original birthday surprise for Wendy.
"Todd, this doesn’t look like the way back to my place." She looked out of the window and realized they were in a place unfamiliar to her.
They seemed to be driving in the opposite direction from her place.
"Let me take you somewhere," he said. "It’s almost dinnertime anyway, so we ought to find somewhere to eat. The doctor said you need to eat more balanced meals, remember?"
"It’s really alright. I can just eat whatever’s at home." Wendy knew that Todd was a good friend, but she couldn’t remember anything about their past, so she just felt really bad for causing him so much inconvenience today.
"Just sit back and relax," he replied.
Then he made a phone call. "We’ll go with tonight’s arrangements as planned."
She heard what he said and was puzzled, so she asked, "What do you mean by ’as planned’?"
"You’ll see." The traffic light turned red, and the car came to a stop. He turned to her and said, "It’ll take a while to get there, so you can take a nap if you like."
He felt that she deserved a good rest after spending the morning worrying and panicking.
Half an hour later, "We’re here?" Wendy had already slept too much in the afternoon and couldn’t really sleep, so she opened her eyes the moment the car stopped.
She sat up and looked out to see that they were in front of a five-star hotel.
