Chapter 232: Don’t Try To See Through Me
"Just go straight over there and someone will pick you up in front of the hospital. If you need anything, you can talk to Dr. Zimmerman directly. He’s the head of the neurology department at that hospital." Zen said.
"Thank you, Zen," said Wendy. "I hope you can help me keep this a secret. I don’t want anyone to know."
"Okay," Zen answered as she glanced at the man beside her.
When the call ended again, Christian said with an intrigued smile, "Neurology?"
Zen blinked and lowered her head slightly under Christian’s probing gaze.
"Don’t you want to tell me what’s going on?" Christian stepped closer to Zen, reached out and cupped her chin to force her to meet his eyes.
In Zen’s eyes, Christian saw evasiveness.
"I don’t know what’s going on. Didn’t you hear the phone call earlier? She asked me to refer her to a doctor, and didn’t say anything about what was going on," Zen swallowed hard while answering back.
"I know you well... " Christian said with a smile.
"Your eyes tell me that you know what’s going on. Or maybe you don’t know and figured some of it out."
"I... " Zen did guess some of it.
Wendy had called for her, asked her to contact a doctor, and not from Metropolitan Hospital. This meant that she didn’t want Michael to know about her trip to the hospital today. And Wendy said she was not sick. If she were really sick, there was no need for her to hide it from Michael.
So, most likely, Wendy found out something and wanted to ask the doctor about it.
It was Zen’s idea to have the doctor change Wendy’s medication in the first place.
A month had passed, so it wasn’t hard to connect it to that incident. However, Zen did not want to tell Christian the truth.
She already owed Wendy something, so if she knew that Wendy suspected Michael, she should take the opportunity to do something about it.
"I asked you to come to my office to talk to you about this quarter’s results," Christian skipped the topic and didn’t pursue it any further.
Christian went to his desk, picked up the report on his desk and said, "Look at this quarter. How much did the design department’s performance drop?"
Zen kept her head down and didn’t say anything.
Ever since Wendy came back to Lake City, Zen’s design department’s performance had been declining.
The design team led by Wendy was indeed much better than her design team. Coupled with the fact that Christian spent a month in jail, DR’s entire company stock tumbled.
"I will do my best to recover the performance," said Zen.
"The clothing market is all but snatched up by Wendy." Christian’s tone was sarcastic as he said, "Zen, Wendy has been back in Lake City for only a few months and has taken most of the business in the clothing market. Some time ago she had a car accident, lost her sight and memory. Even in this case, you have not yet won the cooperation of clients. What use do you think you have now?"
"You want to fire me?" Zen raised her head with trepidation in her eyes as she looked at him and said, "I have worked hard for so many years and generated a lot of revenue for the company in the previous years, right? Now, just because of one quarterly decline in performance, you are going to unload the mill?"
"Is it a matter of one quarter?" Christian sneered and said, "As long as Wendy is still in Lake City and still in MC, your design department will no longer be able to grab the market’s clientele."
"You... " Zen looked into Christian’s eyes and understood what Christian meant at once.
Suddenly, she laughed. "Christian, you’re pressuring me?" Zen sucked in a breath fiercely and said, "You’re forcing me to choose between you and Wendy, aren’t you?"
"Right." Christian didn’t hide his intentions in any way and said, "I’m pressuring you."
"Why do you have to force me?" Zen let out a bitter laugh with tears welling up under her eyes.
She had felt guilty for a long time because of what she had done to persuade Michael to change Wendy’s medication.
Later, she stole her client, which made their relationship stiffen a lot.
She thought that if Wendy made this call, she would do her a small favor and their relationship could be eased. But Christian was there, heard the call, and forced her to do so.
Christian kept saying that she was inferior to Wendy, and Zen knew that he was deliberately provoking her to make her dislike and be jealous of Wendy.
"I asked you when you didn’t win the client last time, and you were the one who said, ’Don’t worry about it. Let Wendy collaborate with the client’." Zen said, "And now you are questioning me about the performance?"
"You’ve been with me for so many years, so you should know my character," Christian spoke without mercy.
"Yes, I know your character," Zen snickered. "I know that since you have said such words, there is no room for maneuvering. Either I leave DR, or I betray Wendy completely. Right?"
Christian didn’t say anything, and the silence made Zen’s heart chill even more. But even so, she still couldn’t say anything about leaving.
She had been working hard for five years. Five whole years.
It was clear that everything had been fine for five years, and that Christian had thought highly of her.
Even if there was no romantic relationship, Christian also treated her as a competent assistant.
However, from the time Wendy came back to Lake City, everything changed.
She knew that Wendy was not to blame. But she was not happy about it. How could she resign herself to it!
"Christian, what kind of a man are you?" Zen realized that she had never seen through him.
Last time, Zen and Wendy failed to grab the client’s support, and when they came back, Zen asked Christian if she should try her best to get the job again to see if there was still a chance.
At that time, Christian said something she couldn’t understand.
He said, "No, why not let others help him create profit?"
When Zen asked him what he meant, Christian just smiled and didn’t say anything.
"Don’t try to see through me... " Christian warned. He squeezed Zen’s chin fiercely and said, "Seeing through me is not a good thing for you."
For Zen, Christian was deadly poison.
She could not help but want to get closer, to understand, and was fascinated but could never see into his heart.
The more this was the case, the more Zen wanted to be close to him.
If Christian wanted to know what Wendy had asked her for today, it wasn’t difficult for him.
Just one phone call and he could have found out.
However, Christian didn’t want to find out himself.
Instead, he directly forced Zen to make a choice without giving her any way out.
He was truly a devil who knew what Zen cared about and knew her weakness.
He aroused Zen’s jealousy and resentment, then used himself as bait to force Zen to serve only him.
"I can give you time to think about... " Christian threw the quarterly statement directly at Zen. "However, I don’t want it to be too long. After all, DR cannot afford to wait."
After saying that, Christian waved his hand at Zen and told her to leave.
Zen bit her lip as she turned around with teary eyes and walked out of the office.
After Zen left, Christian’s smile grew deeper and deeper.
Turning around, Christian rang the intercom on his desk and ordered in a cold voice, "Comprehensively suppress Collins Group at all costs."
