Chapter 221: To Make Sure You Dont Do Anything Silly
"How can it be? I am at your door." Winnie stood in front of the door that was shut and said, "But I don’t see you opening the door either."
"Hmm." Wendy was confused. Was Winnie plotting something again?
A thought came to Winnie’s mind and she asked, "Where do you at again?"
"I am at home."
"No no, I mean, which area are you staying at now?"
"My house is on Fernvale Street." Wendy had a bad hunch about this question somehow.
"Fernvale Street?" When Winnie heard the street name, she paused and then started to chuckle.
"Mrs. Lucas, what are you laughing about?" Wendy asked with a hint of hesitation.
No wonder no one opened the door for Winnie. Wendy was no longer staying in the old neighborhood she used to stay in.
The neighborhood Wendy used to stay in was an ordinary and mediocre neighborhood.
Michael did not love her back then, in actual fact to an extent of hatred and loathing. He did not give her a good place to live in. At that time, even Yvonne stayed in a better estate than her.
Currently, the estate Wendy had moved to was a more expensive area. Winnie thought, Michael wanted to give Wendy and the kids a better place to stay.
On the other hand, he also didn’t want Wendy to remember the past. If he had been honest to Wendy about the past and told her everything, Winnie would not have had a chance to sabotage their relationship.
She was not concerned about what motives Michael had. She only knew one thing.
She could make use of the situation to her advantage.
"Nothing in particular." Winnie stopped her chuckling and said, "Text me your current address. I’ll go over now."
"Mrs. Lucas, why would you want to come over though?" Wendy was cautious as they would usually meet outside instead if they were to meet.
"There are a few things I want to talk to you about face-to-face." Winnie added quickly, "It is about Michael." Winnie though Wendy would agree to meet her as long as it concerned Michael. True enough, Wendy had agreed as per her plan.
She sent her address to Winnie and soon after, the doorbell rang.
Wendy opened the door and saw Winnie. She lowered her head slightly to make it seem like she was dejected.
Winnie stepped in and scanned briefly around the house. She said, "No wonder Michael changed a place for you. This place is much better than the previous house."
"What do you mean by that, Mrs. Lucas?" This time, Wendy’s question was not just to play along with Winnie’s plan. Wendy really wanted to know what Winnie meant by that.
"You don’t understand what I meant?" Winnie frowned and said on purpose, "Michael brought you here right after you were discharged from the hospital? I thought Michael wanted to give you and the kids a better life hence he changed a bigger house for you. But seems like you don’t even know you used to stay in a different house. Or was it that Michael did not want you to remember how he treated you previously..."
After saying this, Winnie quickly covered her mouth, as if she had said something she should not have. "Sorry, I think I have said too much."
Winnie laughed awkwardly, "Since Michael did not tell you, he should have his plans."
Wendy frowned. She knew she should take Winnie’s words with a pinch of salt. But since she started staying in the house after she was discharged, she had her suspicions about this as well. Previously when she came across something familiar, she would have snippets of memories coming back to her.
But nothing in the house sparked any recollection at all even after staying here for so long. When she was discharged, Michael initially wanted to settle her down in a mansion, but she rejected. In other words, this place could really be a different house from the one she used to stay in.
Wendy remained calm nonetheless. She recollected herself as the top priority for her now was to join arms with Michael to expose Winnie’s true self.
Looking at Wendy’s solemn face, Winnie was proud of her achievement. She reached out for Wendy’s hand and gave it a gentle pat. If anyone saw them, they would think that they were very close family members.
"Wendy, don’t think too much into it." Winnie started her ostentatious comforting.
"Michael has always been like that. As long as you both are getting along well, that is all that matter, isn’t it?"
Wendy raised her head and forced a smile. But anyone could tell that she looked hurt. "Mrs. Lucas, did you manage to call Michael earlier?"
Winnie nodded, "Yes I did." She heaved a sigh right after. "That is what I am here. I wanted to make sure you don’t do anything silly."
"What did Michael say?" Wendy asked hurriedly.
"Michael had probably guessed the reason I was calling for so he did not answer my calls." Winnie patted on Wendy’s hand again. With an empathetic tone, she continued, "I did not expect him to not pick up my calls too. Maybe... he really wanted to get a divorce."
"Divorce?" Wendy looked down in disbelief as she mumbled the word. "He was so nice to me previously. Just because of a few photos, he was certain that I committed an adultery. And now, he is insisting on getting a divorce with me."
"Sigh..." Winnie asked as if she was really concerned, "So what are your plans now?"
"I don’t want to get a divorce." Wendy knew what Winnie had in mind so she decided to play along with her for a while more. She wanted to see how pretentious Winnie could get. "Though I lost my memories, I have fallen in love with him over the past two months. If it wasn’t for these photos, we will not have reached this stage of getting a divorce."
"You don’t want a divorce?" Winnie was stunned. Over the phone this morning, she heard Wendy wailing about getting a divorce. "If Michael doesn’t love you anymore, your marriage will just be a mere status on paper and there is no meaning behind your marriage anymore.
"No. Even if he doesn’t love me anymore, even if there is no meaning behind the marriage, I don’t want to get divorced with him." Wendy was insistent and determined.
"But..." Winnie looked at Wendy and she suddenly understood the reason behind it. "You don’t want a divorce because of the ’Mrs. Lucas’ status?"
As if out of her guilty conscious, Wendy shook her head vigorously. "No, I love him. It was a misunderstanding between us. I believe as time passes, Michael will start to trust me again. He will love me like how he used to."
"Don’t be silly, Wendy..." Winnie was being a hypocrite and tried to convinced her otherwise. "Let’s put aside how badly Michael wants this divorce now. if it doesn’t happen this time, there will certainly be a next time. Even if he falls for you again, you are not his first love. Naturally you won’t be the last one."
"Mrs. Lucas, how come it sounds like you are convincing us to get a divorce?" Wendy questioned as she looked at Winnie.
Winnie laughed it off to cover up her real motives. "To be honest, I am conflicted. I hope you both stay as a married couple. I am Michael’s mother. Which mother would not want their sons to have a content family? But if Michael really doesn’t love you and you insist on staying in this toxic relationship, you will end up like me. I have watched over this empty house for decades. And the mistress will call me from time to time just to mock at me.
The title of ’Mrs. Lucas’ just meant that people are still courteous towards me and would not openly talk about me. But behind my back, I know very well that their mockeries and gossips have flooded the city. As someone who has first-hand experience, I hope you don’t follow the same path and always be the joke that keeps the mistresses entertained. Wendy, I really like you and consider you to be my family. That is why I am sharing all these with you."
