Chapter 217: She Needed Time To Think
Yvonne Taylor... Wendy dropped the vegetables she was washing into the sink when she heard that name.
Jake observed Wendy’s reaction and continued, "Mommy, you probably don’t remember who Yvonne Taylor is. She was the most detestable woman ever. She had tried to kidnap me but didn’t succeed.
"She had always been in love with Daddy. When she realized that she couldn’t get Daddy, she plotted that car accident to kill you.
"I know that Daddy has some sort of relationship with Yvonne Taylor, but I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s a friendship between old friends, or maybe like the way an older brother looks at his little sister. Of course, it could have been romantic.
"I had hated Yvonne Taylor then because she almost killed you.
"I wanted to make sure that Daddy did not go soft at the last minute and let her go, so I went with Daddy to take care of her.
"At that time, Daddy... he used the same method to kill Yvonne Taylor."
Wendy’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Michael had killed Yvonne Taylor to avenge Wendy... Though Wendy had lost her memory, there were two names she remembered: Yvonne Taylor and Yonina Collins.
If her dream was about a real event or only a portion of it, that meant that Yvonne Taylor must have been very important to Michael.
Did Michael really kill Yvonne Taylor for her?
No.
"That’s impossible." Wendy shook her head. "If that were true, why didn’t he tell me?"
"I don’t know. But I think Daddy doesn’t want you to know these unpleasant incidents. I think Daddy only wants you to be happy and forget all the past cruel things."
Jake did not use to like Michael too.
Because Jake knew that Michael had done a lot of things to hurt his mother. It was Michael’s fault that Wendy had to live in Rheinsville City with her two children for five years.
Although Wendy had protected Jake and Leah very well, Jake knew that his mother had not had an easy life during those five years. He knew how miserable she was.
That was why Jake followed Wendy back to Lake City to help her exact revenge.
Jake had not expected his attitude toward Michael to be changed gradually. After spending extended time together, Jake felt that Michael truly cared about Wendy.
At that time, to take revenge for Wendy, Michael had stabbed himself. That made Jake trust Michael even more.
So while Jake did not know what had happened today, he was willing to help Michael.
Wendy felt very confused.
She needed time to think and process everything.
Jake had said all he could and astutely left the kitchen on his own.
Michael saw Jake walk out of the kitchen and looked at him expectantly.
"How is your mommy?" Michael asked Jake anxiously.
"I’ve said all that I could, but from the looks of it, I don’t think Mommy trusts you anymore," Jake said. He stood in front of Michael. He was small in stature, but he spoke with a stern warning in his voice, "Daddy, make sure I do not find you being unfaithful to Mommy. If I do, I will not let you off."
In Jake’s heart, his mother would always be the most important.
To him, though Michael was his father, Michael was much less important than Wendy.
Michael nodded and looked worriedly at the kitchen.
Wendy was no longer in the mood to cook the roast chicken.
Michael had already managed to calm Leah down and Leah had eventually fallen asleep.
Suddenly, Michael’s cell phone rang.
It was Mr. York.
Michael was afraid of waking Leah, so he crept out quietly to the balcony to answer the call.
Michael took the call, and Mr. York immediately spoke, "Mr. Lucas, Mrs. Lucas has been spending the past few days with your mother. I have also checked Mrs. Lucas’s phone records. She did not receive any suspicious calls. As for those photographs, I checked the surveillance footage but could not see the face of the person who put the photographs there."
Michael had already suspected that his mother was behind this whole thing, so he was not the least surprised when he heard Mr. York’s report.
However, while Michael was not surprised, his heart felt cold.
Mr. York remained silent for a while. Some minutes passed before he mustered the courage to say, "Mr. Lucas, please don’t get angry at Mrs. Lucas because I think it is your mother who is behind this matter."
Mr. York had watched how difficult the relationship between Michael and Wendy had been. He knew he probably should not have said anything, but he really could not hold it in anymore.
He only hoped for Michael and Wendy to weather the obstacles in their relationship.
Michael looked down and let out a bitter laugh.
It seemed that even Mr. York thought Michael had a bad temper and lacked selfcontrol.
Michael’s temper now was much better than five years ago.
Michael felt that he really needed to reflect and repent of all his past actions.
If even Mr. York was speaking up for Wendy, that meant Michael must have done a lot of unbearable things in the past.
Mr. York did not hear Michael respond and said, "I am sorry, I am out of line."
Mr. York thought Michael was angry, so he was surprised to hear a sigh from the other end of the line and a voice that said, "Don’t worry."
Mr. York had not expected that but was also relieved.
This time, Michael did not intend to blow up matters.
With Winnie’s meddling, it was not a problem of Michael misunderstanding Wendy. Then again, it was Wendy losing trust in Michael.
After Michael ended the call, he placed both hands on the railing, his eyes gazing at the lights along the street.
He had no idea what to do.
Explain? Obviously, that would not work.
Even if Wendy accepted his explanation this time, how about next time?
As long as Winnie continued to create trouble, Michael would have to keep explaining himself.
Carrying on like this would not solve the problem.
Some movement was heard from the living room. Wendy had finished making her roast chicken.
She took the roast chicken out to the dinner table shouted, "Jake, the chicken is done."
Jake leaped to his feet from the side and came running over on his little legs. He climbed onto the chair and smelled the roast chicken fresh out of the oven. He smiled and said sweetly, "Thank you, Mommy."
"Where’s Leah?" Wendy looked around with expressionless eyes. She did not see Leah but saw Michael instead.
She did not know how she should face Michael.
Wendy felt that she was living in a bubble.
What she knew of the world was based entirely on what others had told her.
At present, she no longer knew who she could trust.
Of course, Wendy trusted her son, Jake, but he was still so young. No matter how smart he was, Wendy was afraid that Michael had done all those things for Jake to see.
Wendy could no longer differentiate if Michael’s goodness toward her and the children was from his heart or with an ulterior motive.
When her eyes met with Michael’s, she instinctively looked down.
"Leah is sleeping," Jake replied. "Leah loves the wings. I’ll save the two fat wings for her."
Jake proceeded to pull off the wings with his small hands and placed them on a plate.
Wendy felt comforted by Jake’s actions. She rubbed Jake’s head and smiled as she gave a leg to him.
Jake watched Michael as he walked over slowly. He gave the leg back to his mother.
Then he turned to Michael and said, "Daddy, there is still another leg. Come over quick. I’ll give it to you."
