Chapter 213: Don’t Tell Her
Wendy’s entire body started to tremble slightly.
She took a deep breath and asked, "Who is the person in the photographs?" she asked Winnie.
"This..." Winnie sighed again and looked like she was put in a difficult position. "I think it’s better for you not to know," she told Wendy. "Michael might have simply forgotten to get rid of these photographs.
"You should know how busy Michael is with work. He doesn’t have much time to take care of these things."
"Which is why you shouldn’t take them too seriously."
Yet this was not what Winnie had said a moment ago.
"You can tell me. Don’t worry, I won’t let Michael know that you told me," Wendy promised. "I know that your relationship with Michael isn’t that good, so I’ll keep whatever you tell me today between us."
"Why are you bent on knowing?" Winnie replied with another sigh. "This woman is Yonina Collins. She is the daughter of Collins Group’s big boss.
"You see, back then, everyone thought you were dead. Michael believed that too.
"Since he thought you were dead, and he was already in his 30s, the prime of his life, he couldn’t possibly remain a widower forever... Besides, Michael is the only son I have, and the Lucas family needs an heir. So, Michael and the daughter of Mr. Collins had a..."
"Had a what?" Wendy pursed her lips. She did not understand what Winnie was trying to hint at.
"Oh, it was nothing." Winnie pretended to cover up for her son.
"Then why aren’t they still together?" Wendy asked.
"Because you came back." Winnie reached and held Wendy’s hand in hers, comforting her. "You don’t have to worry. Michael still loves you, and so you should continue to spend your days with him in bliss.
"As for all these complicated, messy matters, I’m sure Michael will settle them properly, unlike his father."
Winnie had brought up Michael’s father on purpose to give Wendy a hint.
Winnie wanted Wendy to know that Anthony Lucas was such a man, and she believed her son to be the same.
"Please tell me the truth. What is the real reason?" Hearing what Winnie said only caused Wendy to start imagining all sorts of things. "It is true that I am back, but five years have passed, and I can’t say whether Michael loved me in the past.
"In those five years I was gone, he met Yonina Collins and even had intentions to go deeper in their relationship. Those five years should be long enough for his love for me to fade. How was it possible that he gave up Yonina just because I returned?"
"Wendy, why must you pursue the matter?"
Winnie continued to pretend that she was unwilling to tell. Her deliberate hesitancy made Wendy even more suspicious.
After taking a deep breath, Wendy said, "You have already said so much. Please tell me everything."
"If you really must know, you can search it online and check his Twitter." Winnie lowered her head as if she were feeling guilty. She continued, "I shouldn’t be telling you so much. If Michael found out, he would surely blame me again. He had specially instructed that nobody is allowed to mention this to you."
"Nobody is allowed to mention this to me?"
Wendy thought of how nobody around her was willing to tell her what happened during the period when she had lost her memories.
Wendy thought that the past was not important, just like what Zen had said. But now it seemed like it was Michael who did not want her to know.
At the same moment, Michael was sitting in his car parked by the roadside.
His eyes were staring straight at the dessert shop that Wendy and Winnie had entered.
Winnie reached across the table and held Wendy’s hand, which felt cold and clammy.
Winnie pretended to be concerned about them and said, "Wendy, Michael did not allow any of us to tell you because he cares about you. Aren’t you two getting along well right now? As long as Michael doesn’t harbor any other feelings or thoughts, and you all carry on with your happy lives, doesn’t that trump all things?"
Wendy looked down and shook her head slightly.
No.
She could not act like a fool and not think about it or not be bothered by it.
Since Winnie had already said so much, Wendy decided to go all the way and asked, "What about Yvonne Taylor? Who is Yvonne Taylor?"
Yvonne Taylor was the only name she could remember from the eight years of memories that she had lost.
Wendy was sure that Yvonne Taylor was not someone as simple as Michael had tried to explain.
"How did you know about her too? Did you remember her?" Winnie looked worried. "Wendy, even if you did remember her, promise me that you won’t let it bother you,
alright?"
From the look on Winnie’s face, Wendy could tell that Winnie was not going to tell her any specifics.
’No matter what, Winnie was still Michael’s mother,’ Wendy thought. Winnie would naturally be on Michael’s side.
Though Michael had already instructed Winnie not to say anything to Wendy, Winnie had still told Wendy so much. Wendy knew she would not be able to get any more answers.
So Wendy took out her cell phone and went to look at Michael’s Twitter account.
Hadn’t Winnie just told her to take a look at Michael’s Twitter account?
Wendy logged in and searched for Michael’s account.
Thankfully, Michael had used his full name "Michael Lucas" as his account name, so Wendy found it immediately.
She scanned through Michael’s Twitter and saw that almost all the posts were about her.
Michael did not post very often, but whenever he did, each post was about how he missed her.
Even the donation that he had made was done so in Wendy’s name.
Simply by looking at his account, Wendy did not see anything strange or amiss.
However, Winnie had said earlier that if Wendy wanted to know about the past, she should check Michael’s Twitter.
Wendy frowned. She looked up at Winnie and asked, "Does Michael have other Twitter accounts?"
"I don’t think so. I only know of one." Winnie continued, "Are you looking at Michael’s Twitter? Now you should know that Michael really desires to spend his life with you. So you should stop imagining things."
No, that was not what Winnie had meant before.
Wendy looked down and pondered.
Winnie could not help letting out another sigh. She said, "As the CEO of MC Enterprise, Michael doesn’t have it easy. He has to consider so many things. If you think about it, he is a semi-public figure. His every move is watched by the public."
What Winnie just said threw Wendy’s heart and thoughts into greater turmoil.
Wendy continued to scroll through the rest of Michael’s Twitter.
What she had scanned earlier were the posts made by Michael. Now, she looked at the comments.
The post that Wendy had clicked to read the comments was posted by Michael after Wendy had returned to Lake City. It was a simple one that was filled with joy, "You have finally returned. Thank God for sending you back to me."
[Wow, congratulations, Mr. Lucas. She is finally back after waiting for five years.] [A man as devoted and passionate as Mr. Lucas is almost an extinct breed. How could he have waited for five years? An ordinary man wouldn’t be so devoted, much less a wealthy man. My neighbor remarried a month after his wife died.]
