Chapter 203: Please Be Okay
Once Wendy Stewart had signed the contract with Mr. Thompson, Jill Lynn hurried to send Wendy Stewart to the hospital as more blood vessels appeared in her eyes.
The mere sight of it shook Jill Lynn to the core.
Sitting in the driver’s seat, Jill Lynn told Wendy Stewart who sat beside her, "Wendy, go on and close your eyes for a while. I’m afraid you won’t be able to hold out if you keep straining your eyes like that.
"I’ll first send you to the hospital to get your eyes checked on before sending you home. You’ve been working both day and night in the past two weeks, you really ought to rest for a few days!
"Don’t worry about the company since the matter with Mr. Thompson has been settled. I can follow up the rest. As for the rest of the designs, we can take our time instead of rushing over the next few days."
Although Jill Lynn was done, she did not hear a response from Wendy Stewart.
"Wendy?" she probed.
Still, no response.
At this point, Jill Lynn began to panic. She stretched over, and shook Wendy Stewart but she did not stir.
Jill Lynn hurried to contact the hospital so that they were ready to receive Wendy Stewart once they arrived.
Then, she called Michael Lucas.
"Wendy, please be okay. If anything were to happen to you, Michael Lucas would not go easy on me!" Jill Lynn muttered as though she were talking to herself.
Michael Lucas was reluctant to let Wendy Stewart return to work. It was all because Jill Lynn felt too stretched at work half a month back. She had shared her troubles at work with Wendy Stewart when she visited, causing Wendy Stewart to return to work after that.
Jill Lynn sped up and reached the hospital in no time.
By the time Michael Lucas was at the hospital, all he saw was a worried Jill Lynn pacing around at the door of the emergency room.
Without hiding the anger in his voice, Michael Lucas asked, "How’s Wendy?"
"I don’t know," Jill Lynn mumbled, afraid to let him know that Wendy Stewart felt some discomfort in her eyes even before they met Mr. Thompson. If she had mentioned that, Michael Lucas would have pressed her about why she did not stop Wendy Stewart from going ahead with the meeting with Mr. Thompson.
Jill Lynn did try, but Wendy Stewart was adamant about meeting Mr. Thompson.
"Didn’t I say that she was not in the condition to return to work yet and that she should be resting at home? All because of that stubbornness to return to work," Michael Lucas would not stop complaining.
At this point, he did not seem like a high and mighty CEO, but a very typical husband who was worried about the wellbeing of his wife.
Jill Lynn was wrought with worry and guilt.
She regretted not being stronger about her stance when she tried to stop Wendy Stewart.
Soon, the doors of the emergency room opened.
"How is she?" asked Michael Lucas who hurried towards the doctor.
"She’s okay, she was just experiencing anemia due to fatigue," explained the doctor.
"Although Mrs. Lucas had been discharged not too long ago, she did have a near death experience then. How could you let her get so overworked within half a month?"
At the doctor’s words, both Michael Lucas and Jill Lynn were hit by pangs of guilt.
"What about her eyes?" asked Jill Lynn. "Her eyes were getting bloodshot, and they looked really scary."
"We have not checked her eyes yet since we were busy applying emergency procedures earlier. In the first place, Mrs. Lucas had recently recovered from blindness. By overworking, it’s only natural that her eyes were strained. We will give her a more detailed examination when she is conscious, but there should not be any major issues."
At the doctor’s assurance, both Jill Lynn and Michael Lucas heaved sighs of relief.
Wendy Stewart was transferred to a regular ward and both Jill Lynn and Michael Lucas stayed by her side.
She was placed on a glucose drip and woke up soon after.
Wendy Stewart woke up, still feeling dizzy. She opened her eyes to see Michael Lucas and Jill Lyn by her side, before scanning her surroundings and registering that she was at the hospital.
"What’s wrong with me?" she asked.
"You fainted," Michael Lucas quickly reached over and helped Wendy Stewart into a sitting position as he instructed, "When you get back home this time, you had better be resting. No more trips to the office."
"I... " Wendy struggled to utter a rebuttal.
However, she noticed Jill shaking her head and Michael having a serious look on his face. Swallowing her words, Wendy nodded in agreement with Michael’s instruction.
"Let me take a look at your eyes," Michael reached over and held Wendy’s head tenderly in his hands, tilting her head towards himself.
"Your eyes have just recovered. What were you thinking to be rushing that design blueprint? Haven’t I told you to just give up on the collaboration? If we need to compensate them, we can just pay for it. After all, what could be more important than the health of your eyes?"
"I just wanted to share the load with you," Wendy explained under her breath.
Michael had been working into the night recently and barely slept for four hours each day.
Wendy had looked on in concern and wanted to be of some help to Michael.
After all, this partnership was part of her job in the first place.
"I don’t need your help at work. What I need you to help me with is to regain your strength, got that?" Michael nagged, "If you ever faint again, I’d be terrified!"
"Okay, I promise I won’t faint again," Wendy assured Michael, patting him gently.
"You have my word now, so don’t worry. Since the partnership with Mr. Thompson has been settled, we can take our time to work on the designs. There will not be any more need to rush."
"You mean you plan to continue working on the designs?" Michael was quick to put his foot down about the arrangement, "I will not allow that. No touching the designs."
"That won’t do! I’m a designer, that’s what I do! You... "
Michael’s sharp gaze of disapproval was clear enough to stop Wendy in her tracks even before she finished her sentence. She knew that it was not a good time to argue with Michael and gave in.
Anyway, he couldn’t remain by her side all the time. Avoiding the topic, she laughed, "I clenched the deal. Shouldn’t you give me some praise?"
"I could almost lock you up at home, and you dare ask for praise? Aren’t you aware of the condition that your body is in? Why would you be pushing yourself like this?"
Michael grumbled as his harsh tone did not discount his words of any affection and warmth.
"By the way, I hadn’t informed you earlier, but I agreed to Mr. Thompson’s bet without seeking your opinion first. Would you be mad?" Wendy mentioned, "Oh, but don’t worry, I’m sure I can win the bet. I won’t let MC Enterprise incur a loss."
"Wendy, do you still not realize what matters most to me?" Michael could sense his escalating frustration, "My focus has never been on the partnership. Whether it’s a done deal or falls through, whether it would earn a profit or make a loss, none of those matter to me. All I want is for you to rest well and keep yourself from pushing past your limit again."
"Okay, you have my word. It won’t happen again," Wendy promised and extended her fingers as though she were making a vow.
Michael sighed and looked at Wendy’s beaming smile with a mixture of adoration and annoyance.
"How are you doing, Mrs. Lucas?" the doctor asked as he stepped into the ward.
Noticing how Wendy and Michael were all smiles, he was relieved as well.
Wendy had been discharged for less than half a month before she had to be readmitted to the hospital. The doctor had begun to worry that Michael might create trouble for the hospital if Mrs. Lucas were to experience any actual health complications.
"Please check her eyes," Michael requested as he stepped aside to give the doctor some space beside Wendy.
Stepping closer, the doctor raised Wendy’s eyelid and shone a flashlight at her pupils to examine them. "Do you feel any discomfort or anything unusual with your eyes?"
he asked.
"It feels a little drier than usual and a little tired, but nothing else," Wendy responded matter-of-factly.
"Then there should not be any problems. It was overexerted on top of conjunctivitis, caused by a lack of sleep. I will prescribe some eye drops. Apply them every four to five hours today and subsequently apply them twice a day. If you consecutively do that for about five days, it should recover," the doctor instructed.
At the doctor’s assurance that there was no major issue with Wendy’s health, a sense of relief enveloped the room.
