Chapter 129: I Will Take Revenge For You
Unfortunately, there were too many people and Leah was too small. There was no way she could have caught up with them. She lost sight of Wendy very quickly.
"Mommy." Leah started crying after she could no longer see Wendy.
Michael had been following behind Wendy the whole time. He saw Wendy from afar and quickened his pace. He pulled down his cap further and had wanted to dash over to catch up. But there were simply too many people, and he was walking so fast that he bumped into a little child.
Michael picked Leah up in his arms immediately and reached out to pat her. "Little girl, did you hurt yourself? I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to bump into you," he checked where she had hit herself on the floor for injuries and apologized.
Todd walked over to them and immediately took Leah into his arms.
He looked at the man standing in front of him. He frowned slightly as he looked him over. This was... Michael Lucas?
Almost like a reflex, Todd held Leah a little tighter and turned her away from Michael to prevent him from seeing Leah.
Todd nodded his head at Michael and carried Leah off without saying anything.
Leah kept looking in the direction she had last seen Wendy before she disappeared.
"Uncle Todd, she said, that is Mommy. Bring me there now."
Todd patted Leah on her back. "That’s not your Mommy," he tried to comfort her. "You were mistaken."
Michael watched Todd carry Leah away. Michael lowered his head and he felt bewildered. Michael had never met these two people before. But he felt a sense of familiarity when he saw that little girl.
He recollected himself and looked at where Wendy had vanished. He had no time to stop and think. He continued chasing after Wendy.
Wendy had heard Leah’s voice. But she did not dare to look back. She knew that Michael was behind her.
If she were to meet Leah at the airport, Michael will know about Leah.
If she were to meet Leah now, she would not be able to live in peace anymore.
"Mommy." Jake pulled on Wendy’s hand. His voice sounded a little sad coming from his small body. "Leah is such a crybaby. She must be crying now."
Jake was much more intellectually advanced than Leah. He had always loved his little sister and taken care of her. When he thought of how she had seen them but could not meet them, she must be very sad. Jake also could not help but feel sad.
Wendy held onto Jake’s hand more firmly. She bit her lower lip and was also feeling sad. Why would she not feel sad?
"We’ll wait for some time to pass and find another chance to come back," Wendy said with determination.
"Ok," Jake nodded his head. He turned back to take a last look.
Unfortunately, Leah was no longer there.
Wendy hailed a taxi once they were out of the airport terminal. She asked the driver to bring them to a tourist spot.
Michael also got into a taxi and asked the driver to follow Wendy’s taxi. He had not expected Wendy to go to a tourist attraction.
Michael could not help being puzzled.
Did she bring Jake back to Rheinsville City just for a holiday?
Wendy had indeed been feeling down lately. But it seemed strange to choose Rheinsville City to relax.
Besides, HG Enterprise was in Rheinsville City. Was Wendy not going to visit them at all?
This time, Wendy noticed through the rearview mirror that there was a car following behind them since they left the airport.
She knew that had to be Michael.
Wendy paid the fare and got out of the taxi. She took Jake’s hand and walked briskly.
They stopped to wait for him after turning a corner. Michael saw them disappear around a corner and ran after them. He made a turn and Wendy appeared right in front of him...
Michael’s heart started to beat very fast when he saw Wendy.
He took an awkward step back. "Wen... Wendy..." he stuttered.
Michael had wanted to say, what a coincidence. Those three words were at the tip of his tongue, but he swallowed them.
To say them now would sound too deliberate.
"Mr. Lucas, what a coincidence." Michael did not say anything, so Wendy laughed and continued, "Have you thought of an excuse? Are you here to see a client? Or are you here for a holiday?"
Wendy’s words made Michael feel even more embarrassed.
"I..." Michael could not find the right words.
"You have not thought of an excuse yet?" Wendy asked. Her face darkened as she continued staring at him. "Michael Lucas, why did you follow me all the way from Lake City to Rheinsville City?" she questioned.
Wendy was no longer joking but was starting to get angry. Michael had no choice but to tell her the truth. "Wendy," he said, "I was afraid that you were leaving Lake City with Jake and never coming back."
"Mr. Lucas, that sounds like a joke," Wendy said. "You really shouldn’t say things like that. Others could easily misunderstand."
Michael felt at a loss.
He had no intention of disturbing Wendy’s life. But he had not expected her to leave with Jake. He could not bear watching them vanish from his world and do nothing.
When she saw that Michael had fallen silent, Wendy took Jake by the hand and continued, "We are going to rest at the hotel. Is it on your way?"
Michael did not dare to say yes to her question. "Have a fun trip. I’ll not get in your way anymore."
Michael had intended to quietly follow them around. He was satisfied with simply being able to see them once in a while. But now that he had been discovered, it was natural that he could no longer follow them.
Because he knew that his presence would make Wendy feel extremely uncomfortable.
All he could do now was to not disrupt or interrupt her life as much as possible.
After saying that, Michael turned around and left Wendy was fuming inside as she watched him walk away.
If he had not followed her, she would be at home now with Leah.
Although Michael had left, Wendy was not sure what his intentions were and whether he would really leave. And so, she did not dare to meet up with Leah anymore.
She was relieved that Leah was being cared for by Timothy Woods and Todd. But she still felt sad when she thought of how Leah had been waiting so excitedly to see her mommy, only to be disappointed.
Since she had already taken two days off work, Wendy planned to stay in this tourist area for both days.
She would take it as a holiday for herself.
At the hotel, Wendy gave Todd a call. The video call got connected and Leah’s tear-stained little face and red puffy eyes appeared on the screen.
Wendy could also feel tears springing up into her eyes.
"Mommy, is it true?" Leah asked. "Uncle Todd said you and Jake can’t come home today." Leah was obviously trying hard to stay calm. So, while her eyes kept filling up with tears, she did not cry out loud.
"Leah, I am really very sorry. Something urgent came up. I’ll visit you a little while later, all right?" Wendy said apologetically.
"It’s ok. You should do what you have to first, Mommy." Leah wiped her tears as she sobbed, "But Mommy, you must come and see me the moment you are free."
"I definitely will." Wendy brought her cell phone to her lips and kissed Leah’s face on the screen.
Wendy had almost lost her life in order to give birth to this daughter. How could she not feel love and tenderness toward her?
She had been so focused on taking revenge but looking at her little girl’s red and dejected eyes, her determination was starting to waver.
Wendy could not help but wonder if it really was worth it.
After a long video call with Leah, Wendy ended the call. After she had hung up, her eyes became wet with tears.
Jake’s little hand reached out to pat Wendy on her shoulder and then he leaned his small body on her. "Mommy, don’t be sad," he comforted her. "If you don’t wish to continue, give it up then. Wait till I am older. Then I will help you take revenge, ok?"
This was the first time Wendy had heard Jake speak like that. It was the first time she heard him speak of taking revenge.
She had thought she had hidden her hatred very well and, so, not many people knew about it. Even Todd had only known of her goal after she had returned. But Jake, how did he find out? He was still so young. Why would he know about her plan to take revenge?
Wendy lifted her head and looked into Jake’s clear but deep eyes.
In that fleeting moment, she suddenly felt that the look in his eyes looked just like Michael’s. Wendy suddenly felt her heart go into a panic.
She grabbed Jake by his shoulders and asked, both surprised and concerned, "Jake, tell me, who told you about the revenge?"
The first person that came to mind was Michael Lucas. Not many people in Rheinsville City knew about her and Michael. But then again, Wendy thought deeper, she felt that the possibility of Michael was not that high.
Since she returned to Rheinsville City, Michael had been certain that Jake was his son.
Under such circumstances, it was unlikely that Michael would tell a little boy such negative things.
Besides, it was Michael who had wronged Wendy and had no right to tell Jake about all those things.
Yet Wendy could not think of anyone else besides Michael.
"Nobody told me," Jake said, sounding like an adult. He tightened his fists and looked at Wendy. "I discovered it by myself."
"You discovered it?" Wendy asked in disbelief. She had always known that Jake was more intelligent than other children his age. His intellect was way ahead of children his age. But she had never told Jake about these things before. How did he find out?
Puzzled, Wendy asked, "How did you find out?" Jake had not intended to tell Wendy how much he knew because he was afraid that she would worry about him.
He had followed her back to Lake City because he had already known her goal of returning.
He was worried that she would not be able to handle everything by herself and wanted to be there for her. But he had not expected his mother to become more and more depressed recently.
This trip back to visit his sister had to be abandoned because Michael trailed them. He could feel that his mother blamed herself and felt guilty for letting his sister down.
So, Jake wanted to help his mother take revenge in hopes that she would be happier. And not be bogged down by her bitterness and become depressed like she was now.
Jake slowly placed his little hand over Wendy’s larger hand.
He was still young, and his palm was merely half of Wendy’s.
His little fingers held Wendy’s palm. He spoke to her in a serious voice, "Mommy, actually, I know a lot of things. I want to tell you that I just want you to be happy. If taking revenge makes you unhappy, then I don’t want you to continue. I am still young and don’t have enough power. Mommy, wait for another few years when I am grown up, I will take revenge for you."
Wendy had never seen her son’s eyes filled with so much seriousness and determination. It seemed like she had underestimated her son’s intelligence all along.
