Chapter 32: Chapter 32

I stared at Tom’s extended hand like it was a poisonous snake.

The assembled Alphas waited for my surrender, their traditional minds already convinced that this was how it should end. A difficult female finally accepting her proper place under male authority.

But I’d learned a few things about pack law in my frantic research, and Tom wasn’t the only one who could play legal games.

"I reject both options," I said, my voice carrying across the clearing with more confidence than I felt.

Tom’s green eyes flashed with fury. "That’s not how this works, Sophie. You don’t get to reject the council’s ruling."

"Actually," I said, turning to address the assembled Alphas directly, "I do. Because your ruling is based on incomplete information."

Harold’s steel-gray eyes narrowed dangerously. "Explain."

I took a deep breath, knowing this was my only shot. "Tom Bennett’s reclamation claim is legally invalid because I’ve already been marked by another Alpha."

The clearing erupted in shocked whispers. Alpha Marcus Stone leaned forward with sharp interest. Alpha Diana Foster’s perfectly composed mask slipped for the first time all evening.

"Impossible," Tom snarled. "I would sense another male’s mark on you."

"Would you?" I pulled back the collar of my shirt, revealing the fresh mating bite on my neck. The mark was still healing, still radiating supernatural energy that made every wolf in the clearing take notice.

Christian’s sandalwood and cedar scent spiked with pride and possessive satisfaction. His mark. His claim. His protection.

Tom’s face went white with rage and disbelief. "When? How?"

"That’s not your concern," I replied, keeping my voice steady despite my racing heart. "What matters is that your reclamation claim is now legally void. Completed markings override incomplete rejections under traditional pack law."

Alpha Robert Hayes consulted the legal documents spread across his makeshift desk. "She’s correct. Formal markings create permanent supernatural bonds that supersede previous incomplete connections."

"The mark could be false," Tom said desperately. "Artificial, temporary, designed to deceive the council."

"Are you volunteering to verify it personally?" I asked, my voice carrying just enough challenge to make him back down. Tom’s incomplete bond with me would let him sense the mark’s authenticity, but it would also confirm that I truly belonged to another male now.

Tom’s jaw clenched as he realized the trap. Verifying the mark would prove I was telling the truth.

"This is irrelevant anyway," Tom said, switching tactics with desperate speed. "Even if she’s been marked, the timing matters. My claim predates any recent bonding."

"Actually," I said, my vanilla and jasmine scent taking on notes of cold satisfaction, "let’s talk about timing. And honesty. And the very interesting legal violations you’ve been committing."

Tom’s confident mask slipped slightly. "What are you talking about?"

I turned to address Lily directly, noting how she’d been trying to stay invisible since arriving. "Lily, that’s a beautiful mating mark on your neck. Very fresh. How long have you and Tom been bonded?"

Lily’s blue eyes went wide with alarm. She glanced at Tom desperately, clearly unprepared for this line of questioning.

"I... that is... we..."

"Because pack law is very specific about males maintaining multiple active bonds," I continued relentlessly. "Incomplete rejections can’t be reclaimed while the male party is actively bonded to another female."

The assembled council members turned to stare at Tom with new interest. Alpha Diana Foster’s voice was sharp as a blade. "Tom Bennett, explain the nature of your relationship with Lily Chen."

Tom’s green eyes burned with trapped fury. "Lily is... we have an understanding."

"An understanding that includes formal mating marks?" I pressed. "Because that mark on her neck looks pretty official to me."

"It’s temporary," Tom said, his desperation showing. "Ceremonial. Not legally binding."

"Really?" I pulled out my phone and showed the council photos I’d secretly taken during their arrival. "Because these images show Lily wearing your mark, scent-bonded to you, and traveling as your official mate. That doesn’t look temporary to me."

Lily’s face crumpled as she realized she’d been used as evidence against Tom’s case. "Tom, you said this wouldn’t matter. You said the council wouldn’t care about our relationship."

"Shut up, Lily," Tom snapped, his mask of control finally slipping completely.

Alpha Marcus Stone’s weathered face darkened with anger. "Are you maintaining active mating bonds while claiming reclamation rights to another female?"

"It’s complicated," Tom said weakly.

"It’s illegal," I corrected. "Pack law specifically forbids dual bonding claims. You can’t maintain an active mating relationship while pursuing reclamation of a previously rejected partner."

The council members exchanged glances that told me I’d found the legal loophole I needed. Tom’s hypocrisy was about to bite him in the ass.

"Furthermore," I continued, pressing my advantage, "Tom’s been stalking me for a while now using incomplete bond remnants to monitor my location and emotional state. That’s harassment, not legitimate courtship."

"I was protecting my legal interests," Tom protested.

"You were violating supernatural privacy laws," I shot back. "Using bond remnants for surveillance without consent is classified as supernatural assault in most jurisdictions."

Christian stepped forward from his position at the edge of the clearing, his neutrality protocols finally allowing him to speak since Tom’s legal violations created grounds for territorial defense.

"The evidence is clear," Christian said, his Alpha authority making the words ring with finality. "Tom Bennett has been maintaining fraudulent legal claims while actively bonded to another female. His reclamation petition should be dismissed immediately."

Harold tried to regain control of the proceedings. "Now wait just a minute—"

"No," Alpha Diana Foster cut him off, her voice carrying the authority of someone who’d heard enough. "Tom Bennett, you’ve presented fraudulent claims to this council while maintaining active bonds that invalidate your legal standing."

Alpha Robert Hayes nodded grimly. "Dual bonding violations are serious offenses. Your reclamation claim is dismissed."

Alpha Marcus Stone’s weathered face showed disgust. "Furthermore, your surveillance and harassment of Sophie Martinez constitute supernatural assault. Silver Moon Pack will face sanctions if these behaviors continue."

Tom’s face was purple with rage and humiliation. His carefully laid plans had collapsed because of his arrogance and hypocrisy.

"This isn’t over," Tom snarled, his green eyes burning with obsessive fury. "Laws can be challenged, decisions can be appealed."

"Appeal all you want," I said, touching the fresh mark on my neck with satisfaction. "I’m under Alpha protection now. Try to come near me again and see what happens."

The three Silver Moon enforcers looked uncomfortable, their loyalty to Tom wavering as his legal position crumbled. Even they could see that their Alpha had been caught in multiple lies.

Lily burst into tears, finally understanding that Tom had used her as a pawn in his obsessive game. Her mating mark suddenly looked less like love and more like evidence of manipulation.

"Lily," I said gently, feeling sorry for another woman caught in Tom’s web of lies. "You deserve better than being someone’s legal loophole."

Tom grabbed Lily’s arm possessively. "She’s mine. Marked and bonded."

"Is she?" I asked. "Or is she just another piece in your game to control women who reject you?"

The council members were already packing up their materials, the proceedings effectively over. Tom’s case had collapsed so completely that continued discussion was pointless.

Harold’s steel-gray eyes burned with frustrated fury as his carefully orchestrated trap fell apart. "This council is adjourned," he said through gritted teeth.

As the other Alphas prepared to leave, Tom stepped closer to me with desperate rage.

"You think you’ve won?" he whispered, his voice carrying a supernatural menace. "You think some Alpha’s mark protects you from what you really are?"

"What I really am," I said clearly, "is someone who won’t be owned by anyone. Especially not by you."

Tom’s laugh was sharp and bitter. "We’ll see about that, Sophie. We’ll see how long your new Alpha wants you when he learns the truth about you."

Before I could ask what he meant, Tom was stalking back to his convoy with his enforcers and a sobbing Lily in tow.

But his parting words left ice in my veins.

What truth? What had I done?

And why did Tom sound so confident that Christian would reject me once he found out?
