Chapter 131: Threatening

He was back in his undeniable prime, hell he looked even better.

His shoulders were incredibly broad and straining against the torn, bloody fabric of his dark combat shirt.

His chest was thick and powerful, radiating a masculine vitality that seemed to literally warp the air around him with its heat.

The dark exhausted bags under his eyes that had plagued him since the exact day that Taula left... It was gone now.

His skin was flawless.

He was strikingly, breathtakingly handsome as he didn’t look like a guy carrying the weight of the world anymore.

He looked like the guy who held the world in his palm but it was his hair and his eyes that made Mirela freeze in blood-curdling terror.

His messy raven-black hair was completely gone.

It had been entirely replaced by a brilliant and glowing liquid silver and it hadn’t just changed color... it had grown to an impossible length.

The flawless luminescent silver strands cascaded like a waterfall of starlight over his broad shoulders, flowing down his back and trailing softly against the obsidian floor around his heavy combat boots.

’Hu... a Princess?’ Mirela thought, he looked like a princess from some sort of play.

When he lifted his head to look directly at her, Mirela gasped loudly while stumbling backward a half-step.

The dark voids of his eyes were gone.

His irises were now a piercing, radiant, brilliantly luminescent silver.

They mirrored the exact same divine power that had illuminated the weeping statue in the Capital.

They held the exact same ancient, holy light that the original Shinigami had possessed in the Winterlands...

Klaus looked like a supreme terrifying deity that had just descended from the heavens to pass final judgment on the earth.

Mirela’s mind instantly jumped to the absolute worst, most horrifying conclusion possible.

Klaus was dead...

The old man had failed the trial, his fragile heart had given out, the Second King had executed him, hollowed out his skull, and forcefully hijacked his body.

The parasitic god had shed the withered husk, using the stolen life force to regenerate the flesh and remodel the avatar to its own divine arrogant preferences.

The silver hair... The glowing eyes... The overwhelming aura of pure power...

’It’s exactly as Anya said.’

It was the exact hallmark of the monster that had tortured Anya’s mother... The tyrant had simply put on a new suit.

Mirela didn’t hesitate.

She didn’t wait for the entity to speak at all less she heard Klaus’s voice and lost her resolve.

She snapped her moon-crystal staff up, leveling the glowing tip directly at his chest.

"Stay right there!" Mirela shrieked with her voice tearing with devastating grief and unyielding rage.

Mirela didn’t run nor did she cower.

The goat-eared maid planted her boots firmly against the obsidian as she raised her moon-crystal staff, pointing the glowing blue tip directly at the center of the silver-haired god’s chest.

The two small curved goat horns resting on her forehead ignited with a dangerous purple light as she aggressively channeled every single ounce of her magical mana into a lethal offensive spell.

The air around her staff began to crackle and hum with rapidly condensing moonmagic.

"I know what you are!" Mirela threatened fiercely with hot tears streaming down her cheeks as she prepared to throw her life away to avenge the man she loved.

Her hands were shaking, but her aim was dead center. "If you are not my Master... I will kill you! I will freeze your stolen heart and shatter it into a million pieces!"

The towering silver-haired deity stopped at the base of the stairs.

He looked at the fiercely loyal demi-human girl aiming a lethal spell at his chest.

He looked at the tears streaming down her face, and the uncompromising devotion burning in her eyes.

The deity didn’t sneer nor did he raise a hand to cast a necrotic wave of death as instead he simply smirked.

It wasn’t an arrogant smile. It was a warm and incredibly fond familiar smirk that reached all the way to his glowing silver eyes.

Mirela blinked, confused by the expression.

In the exact fraction of a second it took for her eyelids to close and open again, the space between them violently collapsed.

There was no sound of a footstep and there was no displaced gust of wind.

There wasn’t even a magical incantation either.

The physical speed generated by a body operating at the prime human condition, fueled by the density of a True Soul King, completely defied the basic laws of physics.

It was a blur.

Before Mirela could even twitch her finger to release the freezing spell, the silver-haired giant was standing directly in front of her.

"Wha—"

Mirela gasped as a pair of muscled arms wrapped securely around her waist.

Klaus didn’t strike her.

He simply scooped her up, lifting her entirely off the obsidian floor and crushed her against his broad chest in a breathtakingly tight and inescapable bear hug.

The moon-crystal staff clattered uselessly to the floor as Mirela’s feet dangled in the air.

"Aw~," Klaus laughed, burying his face into the crook of her neck, his long silver hair cascading around them both like a curtain of starlight. "You’re so cute when you’re threatening me, Mirela~."

The voice.

It wasn’t the weak agonizing wheeze of a dying old man but rather it was deep.

Mirela completely froze in his arms.

She pressed her face against the dark fabric of his combat shirt as she breathed in.

Mirela felt the warmth.

"Master...?" Mirela whispered with her voice sounding incredibly small and muffled against his collarbone.

"It is him, Mirela."

Anya had walked over from where she had been sitting.

The six-year-old Shinigami stood a few feet away with her small hands clasped behind her back.

For the very first time since she had been born from the ash of her mother, a genuine and utterly beautiful smile crossed the little girl’s pale face as her purple eyes shone with relief.

"The resonance of his soul is completely unified," Anya confirmed with her melodic voice ringing clearly in the illuminated hall. "There are no fragments... There is no parasite... He has conquered the trial... He is my Father."

’Does she have to speak like that?’ Klaus thought.

Mirela’s brain finally caught up with reality.

The old man wasn’t dead.

He had won.

He had ripped his life back from the jaws of a god, and the trial had rewarded him by reforging his body into something divine and perfect.

A massive wave of pure heat rushed to Mirela’s face.

She was currently dangling in the air, wrapped in the tight embrace of an impossibly handsome silver-haired demigod, after she had just screamed that she was going to shatter his heart.

Mirela blushed furiously with her skin turning a vibrant beautiful shade of crimson that reached all the way to the tips of her goat ears.

She squirmed in his grip, planting her hands against his broad chest and pushing weakly.

"P-Put me down!" Mirela demanded, pouting fiercely, though she made absolutely no real effort to escape the warmth of his hug. "You scared me to death! I thought you were the monster! Your hair is completely different!"

Klaus threw his head back and laughed which was a loud joyous sound that echoed beautifully off the illuminated runes of the Endless Tower.

He gently lowered her back down, ensuring her boots were planted firmly on the obsidian floor before releasing her waist.

"There you go."

Mirela immediately crossed her arms over her chest, looking away with a fierce embarrassed pout, though she couldn’t stop the massive watery smile from breaking across her blue lips.

Klaus looked at her. He looked at Anya.

Internally, he was still trying to process the sheer absurdity of his own existence.

Just a few hours ago, he was a broken dying old man hacking up blood on the floor and now? He felt like he could punch a hole straight through a mountain.

’Was this all the power that Ryoki had... it feels amazing though I don’t have his domain or any of his Soul spells!’ Klaus thought, even with all of that Soul Mana... his mana core hadn’t broken through to Third class Wizard Apprentice for some reason!

Not even First class!

’Fucking hell...’

Aside from that, his other stats hadn’t just recovered; they had skyrocketed into a realm that didn’t even make sense to him...He didn’t even need to breathe hard...

It was like trading in a rusted-out bicycle for a military-grade tank and then there was the hair.

He could feel the long silver strands resting against his back.

It was ridiculous.

He looked like one of those pretentious, overpowered boss characters from the cheap gacha games he used to play back on Earth.

The kind of character designed entirely to bait people into spending half their paycheck on microtransactions.

If he walked into a tavern looking like this, people would either instantly worship him or try to assassinate him on principle but as he looked at the two girls standing in front of him, the gamer mindset faded.

He didn’t care if he looked like a pretentious prick... He didn’t care about the new stuff or the absurd power scaling... He only cared that he was actually here, standing in front of them and breathing.

’What a good life...’

He raised both of his large warm hands.

He placed his right hand on top of Mirela’s dark hair, right between her small goat horns, and placed his left hand on top of Anya’s silver head.

"Thank you..."

He let his hands rest there, offering a warm pressure that communicated everything words simply could not.

He was thanking them.

He was thanking them for carrying him up those stairs when he was too weak to walk.

He was thanking them for loving him when he was so cringe...

He had promised to come back to them and for the very first time in his miserable life, Klaus hadn’t failed.

"I’m back," Klaus whispered softly, his glowing silver eyes filled with unconditional affection.

Anya leaned into the touch with her purple eyes closing softly. "Welcome back, Father."

Mirela sniffled, reaching up to grip the fabric of his sleeve, refusing to let go. "Welcome back, Master."

The three of them stood in the center of the radiant, beautifully illuminated ground floor of the Endless Tower, bathed in the pure white light of the ancient runes.

The oppressive nightmare of the Winterlands was finally officially over.

The boss had been slain and the dungeon had been cleared in game terms.

Anya stepped back, smoothing down the front of her oversized blue tunic.

The rare smile faded, replaced by her usual formal Shinigami demeanor as she bowed deeply at the waist.

"I officially congratulate you, Father," Anya stated as her voice echoed with respect. "You have slain the usurper... You have integrated your fractured psyche and you have claimed the power of Ryoki. You have successfully conquered the trial and assumed the true undisputed mantle of the Soul King."

Klaus smiled, dropping his hands to his sides. "I couldn’t have done it without you two keeping me grounded."

He was about to ask what the next step was.

He was about to ask Anya how they were supposed to disable the massive purple spatial barrier surrounding the tower so they could actually leave this godforsaken place and find a decent bed but before the words could leave his mouth, the system intervened.

It did not appear as a small discreet notification in the corner of his vision.

VWOOM!

A massive and brilliant highly complex holographic tab materialized directly in front of Klaus’s face.

It was huge, easily taking up his entire field of vision.

This tab was forged from pure sapphire blue light, framed by intricate ancient silver borders that mirrored the glowing runes carved into the pillars around them.

It didn’t look like a standard user interface, rather It looked like the control panel of a god.

Klaus narrowed his silver eyes with his expression flattening into a look of focus.

He read the glowing text that scrolled across the massive display.
