Chapter 221 – Syrus Returns!
The country, rightly so, was still in a great panic, and many people were trying to calm down. However, Anlesa didn’t care about that. They had done their major part, and now it was time for rest. Anlesa had used the chaos to escape. With people everywhere and people still looking for her, it wasn’t the easiest, but the moment she disappeared, she completely changed herself. Then, once she was near Lord Hall’s house in the tunnel system, she swapped clothes and burned what she wore.
[...It is almost kind of frightening how fine we are.] Luna quietly mentally muttered. This was the first combat they went into without prior injuries and bodily issues pulling them down, limiting their abilities. This was their first opportunity to truly let loose within self-created restrictions, rather than forced bindings.
They still had plenty of mana, as Syrus’s mana control of her Blood Attribute was absurd. Every drop of mana was efficiently used, and large portions were recycled. Then there was Eva’s potion, which, while elevating their abilities, didn’t incur an increased cost. Overuse simply meant that the enhanced abilities would run out sooner.
What they did at Arisea Station was already crazy, the constant fighting of mutated beasts was followed up by black knights. She thought that would be the craziest performance of their abilities, but no. Today they fought against a country and won…
[Ehh, don’t get too cocky. Someone can always try to stab us in the butt.] (Syrus)
[Cocky is not an emotion I am experiencing.] (Luna)
[Sure, sure.] Syrus could see Luna was.
[...] Luna tried to deny it, but there was a part of her that was absolutely delighted by their performance. It was the first time they used Moonlight in such a public setting, and it brought such a warm feeling to her heart. Her skills always felt in the shadows, and she was the only one who couldn’t participate during the ordinary days’ combat. Even if Syrus didn’t have either of her current Attributes, she still brought her powerful combat sense and abilities. Luna, in her own mind, brought nothing.
[...] Eva felt strange. She wasn’t exactly sure what mix of feelings was floating inside her, but it had been such a long morning after such a long few weeks of being inside this country. They had certainly done a good deed, but killing was never a fun feeling for her and just… everything. The plots of the plague, constant assassination attempts, and all the worry about what could happen to the country. It was just… a lot.
Eva thought a holiday would be nice.
Like Luna, the consequences of the fight were weighing on Eva’s mind.
This was their most violent encounter with people, inversely this was the smoothest major conflict they had been a part of. Only their attack on the bandits had reached a number of casualties even close to what happened today, but they were all people who were stuck with a life of crime. The people they thought of today, many were just people wanting to protect the city.
Syrus did her best to support the morals of the two passengers. Many people she left were only injured, excluding the masked assassins for whom she had no mercy for. But she knew there were people whom she knew the other two wished hadn’t died. Not every hit success kept someone down, and sometimes a bad roll or fall was what did a man in.
Breathing out, it was time for a refresh. Leaving the mindset of Rose, they left the act and were ready to return to everyone.
Mere minutes after Rose’s disappearance, Syrus had entered Lord Hall’s manor from the back entrance. The guards recognised her and let her inside.
Once she was in, she noticed the crowd. “I’m back.”
“Syrus!” Ethan jumped up, and Cobalt raced after him. “Woof!”
“There, there, you two.” Syrus gave them both a pat on the hand.
Lavender eyed Syrus, “Did you get into some fights along the way?”
“Getting into the city was a bit of a pain, yes, but that fire in the sky was not me,” Syrus said, as if wanting to avoid any accusation.
"No, I thought it was… if you were capable of something like that at your age, I would suspect you to not even be human.” Lavender sighed but smiled, knowing Syrus was safe.
“Harsh, maybe in my next life I will be a once-in-a-century genius.” Syrus joked.
Maca looked up and down Syrus and didn’t see any injuries. “Why do you think she has been in a fight?”
“She smells like she has been next to a fire burning.”
[...The smell of burning my hands for a moment is a lot weaker than what it was.] (Syrus)
“That was probably because of my breakfast rather than the fighting.” Syrus found a chair and sat down. “I have missed these chairs.”
“So.” Syrus's voice turned serious. “Where is the duo?”
“Downstairs.” Lavender pointed to the wall behind them. “There is a ladder down to a storage basement, and there are no entrances to it. Ethan was just down there before you showed up.
“That’s good.” Syrus let out a long breath and relaxed.
A familiar female apprentice asked from the end of a hallway. “Is everything okay here? We heard the door open?” Syrus leaned over and made no dramatic facial expressions as she saw two people.
Lavender answered, “Yes, everything is fine.”
“Who are these two?” Anlesa did not expect to see the house robbers again, especially not in Lord Hall’s manor.
Lavender answered, “Apparently, researchers who had jumped at the opportunity to study someone who had suffered from something at the very least similar to the plague. They should be all good, they are from one of the organisations Lord Hall has hired before.” Lavender gave the duo the side eye. “I’m not sure what, but apparently they also gave Lord Hall information as payment.”
“They paid him?” Paying anyone like Lord Hall so they could do a job for him was absolutely wild and might’ve been the most insane thing Syrus had heard anyone do.
Maca finished. “In a way, yes.” He also felt the situation was very confusing.
“Now.” Lavender stared directly at Syrus. “I heard about what happened on the streets. Did you see the tall woman with the blood red hair and eyes?”
Syrus paused as if she were joking. “The one dripping with blood with a lance, tearing the city a new one? Yes, I did see her. Did quite a number on everything, really.”
“A friend of yours?”
“Did you hear about the mess before from Mary?” From the tone of Lavender’s voice, Syrus knew about the story told to Mary. Not surprising since she figured this happened at least when Rose showed up, if not before.
“Yes.”
“Then no. Not a friend in any way I would describe it, but they did help me, then told me not to involve myself during today’s mess.” Syrus paused. “I thought about ignoring that, but by the time I arrived, I saw her fighting people on the roof, then declaring Abea dead.”
Lavender paused. “Do you really think it was handled single-handedly?”
“She mentioned us, so there has to be at least one more person, but from the bodies on the ground. She did break through the main defences by herself.”
Ethan asked, “How is that humanely possible?”
“Great question…”
“Even you are flabbergasted?” said Lavender.
“I can do some crazy shit.” Syrus humbly admitted. “There were a lot of people on the ground, and based on what I saw, even at the end, she didn’t look tired.” Anlesa's eyes sharpened. “It felt like something more from a story than a real conflict.”
