After speaking, Samantha went to wash her hands, then turned and walked away with a smile on her lips.

That triumphant smile was impossible to hide.

It became a tangible dagger, causing a dull ache between Rose’s brows.

Samantha left so abruptly that she didn’t give Rose the slightest chance to respond.

Rose let out a soft snort, laughing in exasperation.

Some people had truly become shameless—doing the wrong thing while dressing it up as something noble and calling it "true love."

As she stepped outside, she saw Samantha heading straight toward Ryan.

As if she had more right to stand beside him than Rose did.

Caleb walked over. Noticing Rose’s expression, he asked, “What’s wrong?”

Rose looked away and pursed her lips. “Nothing. I just got bitten by a dog.”

A mad dog was the kind that chased after you and tried to tear you apart, even when you ignored it.

Caleb instinctively glanced toward Samantha. “Her?”

“What’s on the schedule after this?” Rose asked, unwilling to waste another second talking about Samantha.

Only then did Caleb reply, “There’s a dinner afterward. The university administration wants to meet with you formally and discuss your future position.”

Rose was currently one of the university’s most highly regarded recruits, and the administration took her very seriously.

Rose lightly scratched the tip of her nose. “Do I really have to attend?”

Caleb flicked her forehead playfully. “My dad will be there too. What are you afraid of? It’s just a chance to meet your future colleagues officially. Since your appointment process isn’t finalized yet, your identity won’t be made public for now, but a private introduction is necessary.”

Shaking his head with a smile, he added, “You’re still just a little girl at heart.”

From a distance, James watched the interaction clearly.

The atmosphere between Caleb and Rose was relaxed and natural. It was obvious that Rose trusted him deeply and occasionally revealed a hint of the innocent, youthful side she rarely showed others.

Anyone who didn’t know better might assume Caleb was her actual brother.

Still, James couldn’t deny one thing.

Rose seemed remarkably good at attracting attention from the opposite sex.

The realization made him unconsciously frown.

He couldn’t quite explain why.

“Mr. Taylor? What are you looking at?” Samantha asked as she walked over.

James snapped out of his thoughts. “Nothing.”

Samantha smiled. “Is that so?”

She had noticed it.

James had been watching Rose, and quite attentively at that.

The thought caused her smile to fade slightly.

Oliver walked over and draped an arm around James’s shoulder.

“Sam landed a major client today for her product launch. Things went smoothly, and she even exchanged greetings with Dean Byrne. Plenty of people saw it.”

Samantha had gone out of her way to speak with Leo, and during the group photo session, she had even managed to capture a picture of them appearing to chat happily together.

Later, it could be used to enhance her professional image.

“Did Dean Byrne explicitly say he’d accept students?” James asked.

Samantha smiled. “It still depends on the interview results, but I should be fine.”

Oliver laughed. “You studied at NYU, have overseas academic experience, and your credentials are excellent. There’s no reason for Dean Byrne not to take you. It’s practically a done deal.”

As he spoke, he glanced toward Rose.

She was walking toward the medical school building alongside Caleb and two of the university’s renowned professors.

“Once you join Dean Byrne’s research team, you’ll be working directly with him. Rose, on the other hand, only got to meet those professors today because Caleb introduced her. After today, if she wants access to NYU, she’ll have to go through the proper channels.”

Rose was incredibly lucky.

She had joined a great company, and now Caleb was willing to open doors for her and introduce her to influential people.

But after today?

Those doors would likely remain closed.

Samantha immediately understood what Oliver meant and covered her mouth with a soft laugh.

In other words, Rose wasn’t even in the same league.

Ryan sat nearby, replying to work messages.

He seemed completely uninterested in the conversation about Rose taking place around him.

Detached.

Indifferent.

Oliver turned back to James. “I still don’t understand what Trevor Robinson was thinking. Why did he take such an interest in Rose?”

There were countless outstanding women in the world.

Other than being pretty, what did Rose really have?

At that, Samantha’s lips curved slightly.

“Mr. Robinson has probably realized by now that he was being played.”

After all, Ryan had publicly revealed his marriage to Rose during the Knight family anniversary banquet.

Once Trevor learned that Rose was Ryan’s wife, he would naturally realize she’d been keeping the truth from him.

As a married woman, what made her think Trevor would continue devoting himself to her?

“Exactly,” Oliver agreed. “I heard Trevor recently went abroad. There hasn’t been any follow-up since. He’s probably given up on her.”

He snorted dismissively.

Given Trevor’s status and pride, there was no way he would continue involving himself with a married woman from the Knight family.

Samantha raised an eyebrow.

“Ariel.” Ryan suddenly looked up, his eyes clear and cold. “How’s the search for Ariel’s birth mother going?”

He was speaking to James.

James was determined not to let Trevor gain the upper hand over the Taylor family.

He intended to find Ariel’s biological mother and disrupt Trevor’s plans.

Narrowing his eyes, James replied, “We’ve found some leads. Five years ago, Trevor spent some time in D.C. and frequently visited a private hospital. The timeline roughly matches Ariel’s birth.”

However, because it was a private hospital, obtaining the records wouldn’t be easy.

Ryan slipped his phone back into his pocket. “As long as there’s a lead, finding her won’t be difficult.”

James’s expression turned thoughtful. “Once that woman returns and demands recognition, Trevor’s life will become complicated no matter who he’s with.”

He already knew the engagement between the two families would eventually be canceled once Trevor returned.

But he wasn’t willing to let the Taylor family be caught off guard.

If that woman kept causing trouble, it would at least give Trevor a headache.

Ryan glanced sideways. “Still no news about your sister?”

Samantha and Oliver both looked over.

James pinched the bridge of his nose. “Sometimes I wonder whether all these years of searching have been pointless. Maybe...”

“If she were still alive,” Ryan interrupted thoughtfully, “how old would she be now?”

“Twenty-seven, I suppose.”

Ryan rubbed his fingertips slowly.

“What month was she born?”

“May. Why?”

“Nothing.”

Ryan lowered his gaze.

A complicated emotion flickered briefly in his eyes.
