Chapter 188: Chapter 188 The Patent That Exposed the Truth

“Mr. Knight, shall we set aside some time later to discuss the buyout contract?” Mr. William asked politely.

Adhering to the principle of never offending Ryan—even if the boss had changed—he maintained a cordial attitude.

Unlike Rose, he simply couldn’t afford to be so blunt with Mr. Knight.

After all, he had no desire to be blacklisted from the industry.

Ryan turned his gaze away from the door. “Alright. I’ll contact her when the time comes.”

Oliver walked over. “Rose really doesn’t have enough foresight. Although Sam’s project is demanding a high buyout price, she doesn’t realize that once it launches, the returns and conversion rates will be on an entirely different level. She really isn’t cut out for this.”

The reason he had come today was because he had invested in Samantha’s project.

He wanted Samantha to have a brighter future—at the very least, one free from Rose’s interference—so that her path forward would be smoother.

“It’s precisely because she lacks foresight that I was able to take the team and the project with me so easily. There’s nothing wrong with that.”

Now that her initial frustration had faded, Samantha had regained her composure.

Even if Rose had mocked her, she had still achieved what she wanted.

The one who truly suffered the loss was Rose.

The irony was that Rose seemed completely unaware of it.

“I’m going to take a call.”

Ryan stood up, choosing not to join the conversation.

As he walked out, he happened to see Mr. William arranging for someone to remove Rose’s chair.

The very chair Samantha had been sitting in.

It was being thrown away as if it were garbage.

Merely sitting in it had been enough to condemn it.

His gaze lingered on the chair for several seconds before he slowly looked away.

*****

Rose was busy that day. After finishing matters at New Hope, she still needed to return to G.S.

As she walked toward the elevator, she ran into Samantha, who was also leaving.

Samantha seemed to be in good spirits again.

After glancing at Rose, she said, “Rose, I hope you sign the contract as soon as possible. Don’t delay my upcoming promotional activities. Soon, I won’t be carrying the New Hope name anymore.”

She had originally planned to build a stable career at New Hope.

But since New Hope had fallen into Rose’s hands through what she viewed as manipulation, she refused to remain under Rose’s control.

Leaving was the best option.

At the very least, it would prevent Rose from benefiting from her success.

As for her future achievements, Rose could only watch from the sidelines.

Rose glanced at the elevator display. “Oh. Congratulations.”

Oliver walked over and teased, “It’s okay. One day, you’ll have the chance to build a team and launch a project like this yourself.”

The comment sounded half-hearted, bordering on mockery.

Rose thought they were all insane.

If she were still practicing medicine, she would have prescribed them medication for delusional disorder.

Samantha, however, seemed pleased by Oliver’s words.

Her mood improved even further.

Just then, her phone rang.

Samantha answered the call.

“Ms. Samantha Hill? This is regarding the results of your patent reexamination. Following a formal review, your patent rights have been revoked. Ms. Aster has provided a complete chain of evidence proving copyright ownership.”

The notification instantly drained the color from Samantha’s face.

Could Aster really have evidence proving ownership of the patent?

But she had clearly never registered it.

Unless...

Had Aster been using another name?

Samantha’s expression darkened.

She had always assumed that if Aster couldn’t produce concrete evidence, the patent dispute would drag on indefinitely. Eventually, without proof of ownership, the invention would effectively remain hers, and public criticism would gradually fade away.

But now...

Aster had clearly prepared a backup plan.

“Excuse me,” Samantha asked, “did Aster register under a different name? Could you tell me what it is?”

At the very least, she wanted to know who Aster really was.

Her nationality.

Her background.

Anything.

When Rose heard the question, her eyebrows twitched slightly.

For a moment, she worried the Patent Office might accidentally reveal something.

But she had overreacted.

A moment later, Samantha frowned and replied, “The other party doesn’t wish to disclose that information? I understand.”

Rose lowered her eyes without revealing a single emotion.

“What happened?” Oliver asked.

Samantha glanced at Rose and decided there was no point hiding it.

After all, Rose already knew about the matter.

“My patent was revoked. Aster provided the formula data as evidence. She’s a senior figure in the field, so my patent had to be withdrawn.”

She sighed bitterly.

What she could never understand was why Aster had remained completely silent throughout the entire process.

Not once had she personally appeared.

Not even for the patent dispute.

Then again, people at Aster’s level rarely handled such matters themselves.

She was Leo’s junior and Dr. Nathan Hale’s disciple.

Someone with that level of status naturally had people handling things on her behalf.

Oliver glanced at Rose. “Just focus on your project. There will always be opportunities to apply for patents later, but a project this good doesn’t come around every day. Don’t you agree, Rose?”

Rose could tell he was trying to save face for Samantha.

At the same time, he was subtly implying that she had nothing of comparable value to offer.

She couldn’t help but let out a quiet scoff.

The elevator doors opened.

As she stepped inside, Rose turned to look at them.

“Well then, I wish you success.”

Just then, Ryan returned after finishing his phone call.

Rose immediately pressed the close-door button.

Ryan didn’t appear to notice.

His gaze merely swept over her before he stepped into another elevator with Samantha.

*****

Rose also received the patent review results.

Naturally, Samantha and the others were confused.

The patent applicant’s name had not been a code name.

It had been her real name all along.

But given Samantha’s arrogance and prejudice, there was no chance she would ever associate someone like Rose with Aster.

Some people were destined to remain trapped within the limits of their own assumptions, unable to see the wider world beyond them.

That evening, Diana invited Rose out for dinner.

Halfway through the meal, Diana finally asked, “Has Samantha left New Hope?”

“You found out that quickly?” Rose asked in surprise.

Diana tapped the table. “How could I not? The entire industry is talking about it. Samantha threw a huge cocktail party. Since Ryan attended, plenty of people went out of their way to show their support. She was celebrating her team’s independence—they’ve already popped the champagne.”

The product hadn’t even launched in major hospitals or medical institutions yet.

But the publicity campaign was already in full swing.

“Everyone in the industry knows she isn’t his official girlfriend,” Diana continued bitterly, “but because they want to curry favor with Ryan, they still go out of their way to flatter Samantha.”

The more she spoke, the angrier she became.

“They’re getting more brazen by the day. Has Ryan ever stopped to think about how all this makes you look?”

Before, people fawned over Samantha because they didn’t know Ryan was married.

But now everyone knows Rose is Mrs. Knight.

And Ryan is still openly supporting Samantha.

What do you think people are saying behind Rose’s back?

They compare her to Samantha.

And all Rose gets in return is ridicule and mockery.

After all, Samantha is the celebrated genius.

Who is Rose in their eyes?

Surely Ryan wasn’t oblivious to that.

Rose took a sip of her blueberry and yam drink. “I’m attending public events under the pretext of project-related work. No one can really criticize me for that.”

Still, there was no denying that Ryan was actively building connections for Samantha.

His arms were broad enough to shield others from wind and rain.

Yet somehow not broad enough to keep the rain from falling on his own wife.

Fortunately, Rose had long since accepted that reality.

She could let it go easily.

After all, the ninety million dollars would soon be transferred into her account.

As far as she was concerned, as long as the money arrived, she was satisfied.

The next day, Rose received a call from Leo.

“It’s the anniversary celebration of the NYU School of Medicine. Since you’ll be taking up your position as an associate professor soon, they’d like you to attend tomorrow as a special guest.”
