Chapter 182: Chapter 182 The Hidden Child Revealed

Mrs. Alice’s single question struck like a bolt from the blue, shattering the calm.

Ryan’s dark eyes instantly locked onto Rose.

The air seemed to vanish from the room.

Cold sweat broke out across Rose’s back, and the fine hairs on her neck stood on end.

She never could have imagined things would turn out this way.

The moment Mrs. Alice had touched her wrist, Rose had sensed that the woman’s technique was far too professional. Alarm bells had immediately gone off in her mind, but by then, it was already too late.

Margaret’s expression changed as well.

“No,” she said suspiciously. “How did you come to that conclusion?”

Rose seized the opportunity to pull her hand back.

Her clenched fingers were ice-cold.

Most of all, Ryan was still staring at her.

His gaze was like a blade, effortlessly cutting through the defenses she had spent years building and exposing the secrets she had hidden so carefully.

It almost made her forget how to breathe.

Forcing herself to remain calm, Rose looked at Mrs. Alice.

Mrs. Alice studied her with confusion, her eyes traveling up and down Rose’s figure.

“A pulse cannot lie,” she said. “That’s the true mystery of Traditional Medicine. Her pulse is completely different from that of someone who has never given birth. However, Mrs. Knight’s pulse is very weak. Logically speaking, she must have been ill for quite some time.”

Rose hadn’t expected things to unfold like this.

Margaret’s methods always seemed to strike directly at her weakest point.

Ryan’s face remained nearly expressionless, but his gaze made Rose feel as though countless needles were piercing her skin.

His eyes were cold and clear.

“Could there be a mistake?” he asked.

Mrs. Alice looked offended.

“I’ve treated patients for decades,” she said. “I’m not the kind of doctor who mistakes a pulse reading.”

The atmosphere grew tense once more.

Margaret suddenly looked at Rose, uncertainty flickering in her eyes.

“Why don’t you check again?” she suggested. “Rose and Ryan have been married for seven years and still don’t have any children.”

She turned toward them. “Your Grandma Alice has practiced Traditional Chinese for decades. I specifically invited her here to help improve your health. It’s simply unacceptable that you haven’t had children after all these years. Let’s find out which one of you has the problem. Rose, you need to take this seriously. If necessary, we’ll try acupuncture and herbal treatments.”

Even IVF, if it came to that.

She was determined to ensure the Knight family line continued.

That was the sole reason she had summoned them back today.

Who could have imagined hearing such an unbelievable statement instead?

Yet the fact remained that they had no children.

Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been so shocked and doubtful.

Even Mrs. Alice began questioning herself.

“No children?” she asked. “What married couple goes seven years without having children?”

There was no malice in her words, but they still cut deeply.

Rose felt as though she were once again confronting the humiliation she had spent years pretending didn’t exist.

“Mm.”

Ryan’s lips moved slightly. “We have no children.”

His tone was cold and distant.

Rose couldn’t bring herself to look at him.

In that brief moment, her thoughts raced wildly, and a wave of panic nearly overwhelmed her.

She wanted to run.

To flee without looking back.

But she couldn’t.

Doing so would be the same as giving them the answer.

“Come here. Let me check again.”

Mrs. Alice refused to let it go and instinctively reached for Rose’s wrist once more.

Rose fought the urge to pull away.

She knew that the more she resisted, the more suspicious it would seem.

Because of her research, she had studied Traditional Medicine herself.

She knew better than anyone that Mrs. Alice was genuinely skilled.

“Why don’t you examine Ryan first?” Rose said quickly, buying herself time. “I’ve been extremely busy lately. Perhaps my body is simply exhausted.”

Mrs. Alice considered it. “That’s possible.”

She released Rose and motioned toward Ryan.

“Let me check you first. Have your wife sit down and rest for a moment.”

Ryan seemed lost in thought.

His lashes lowered slightly.

Only when he heard her speak did he lift his head.

His gaze lingered on Rose’s seemingly composed profile for two seconds before he spoke.

“I’m fine. I had a physical exam not long ago.”

It was obvious he had already made up his mind.

He wanted Mrs. Alice to examine Rose thoroughly and determine exactly what was wrong.

Rose’s heart skipped a beat.

She instinctively glanced at him.

Only to discover that he had been watching her the entire time.

Their eyes met unexpectedly.

His gaze was sharp and penetrating.

Behind its calm surface, there seemed to be nowhere for her to hide.

Rose held her breath.

Her eyes stung.

Today felt like a trap designed specifically for her.

One wrong move, and everything would be exposed.

Her Ariel...

She would never allow the Knight family to take her away.

“Why are both of you so resistant to seeing a doctor?” Mrs. Alice scolded. “This won’t do. How can you continue the family line if you refuse to take care of your health?”

It was clear that Margaret had become fixated on the earlier remark about childbirth.

Frowning, she looked at Rose with visible displeasure.

“Seven years. In any other family, a daughter-in-law who hadn’t produced a child after seven years would have been divorced long ago. But haven’t I always treated you well? Haven’t I refrained from pressuring you? Haven’t I accepted you all this time?”

Her voice grew sharper. “If there really is something wrong with your health, then you’re holding back the Knight family. If there’s a problem, get it treated. Stop being so stubborn.”

She kept pressing the issue.

It felt less like concern and more like an interrogation.

No matter what Rose did, it seemed to be wrong.

As though the Knight family had done her a tremendous favor and she should be eternally grateful.

At that moment, Rose realized there was no escaping today.

Whether she wanted to stay or not, they would force her to remain until they got an answer.

She knew Ryan had been watching her closely all along.

And she knew that someone as perceptive as Ryan must already be suspecting something.

She lowered her eyes.

Mrs. Alice sat down across from her once again.

Margaret stepped forward, grabbed Rose’s hand, and practically forced her into the chair.

Neither of them cared what Rose wanted.

Mrs. Alice placed her fingers against Rose’s wrist.

Ryan remained seated where he was.

One leg crossed over the other.

The hand resting on his lap slowly turned a lighter that had long since lost several of its diamonds.

His dark, inscrutable eyes drifted toward Rose’s flat stomach.

Fragments of the past flashed through his mind one after another.

A long silence followed.

Then Mrs. Alice finally spoke. “I was right.”

Ryan immediately looked at her.

Even Mrs. Alice appeared perplexed.

“I wasn’t mistaken before,” she said. “The pulse is indeed different. In Traditional Medicine, there are distinct signs that indicate whether a woman has been pregnant before. I can guarantee my diagnosis.”

Margaret was equally stunned. “What does this mean, Rose?”

Her gaze sharpened instantly.

Seeing Rose’s pale lips, Mrs. Alice slowly withdrew her hand and lowered Rose’s sleeve.

“You are right.”

Her voice was soft.

Ryan’s hand froze on the lighter.

Rose finally lifted her head.

She met his unreadable gaze directly, without avoiding it.

Then, slowly and clearly, she said: “We do indeed have a child.”
