Chapter 161: Chapter 161 Think About Me
The reason Rose had reached that conclusion was obvious to everyone else as well.
After Ryan spoke those words, Samantha—who had initially been displeased by his stepping in to help Rose and by the physical contact between them—immediately relaxed.
She even shot Rose a mocking glance.
A sweet smile spread across her face.
To put it simply, Ryan had acted entirely in Samantha’s best interests.
He had stopped James from exposing certain truths and protected Samantha’s reputation from being damaged.
As for Rose?
She didn’t factor into the equation at all.
"That’s right. Don’t fall for someone else’s trap. Some people are just waiting for you to say something that benefits them."
Oliver was finally beginning to process everything. He glanced at Rose as he spoke.
He was genuinely shocked that Trevor had openly admitted he liked her.
He couldn’t help wondering when Rose had managed to get close to Trevor behind everyone’s backs.
The more he thought about it, the more disapproving his gaze became.
"Some people have lost even their most basic sense of morality. They haven’t even settled their own personal affairs, yet they’re already rushing to attach themselves to someone powerful."
What right did Rose have?
Her divorce wasn’t even finalized, and she was already looking for her next relationship.
And of all people, she had set her sights on Trevor.
Wasn’t that a betrayal of Ryan?
Diana, who had been listening from the doorway, immediately sneered.
"Are you blind, or are you just missing a few screws? There’s a homewrecker standing right beside you, and somehow that’s not the problem? You’re so good at double standards. What is it? Are you trying to flatter your way up the ladder, or do you actually think that pile of crap smells good?"
Diana was never one to hold back.
Every word hit like a slap.
Oliver had never been spoken to like that before.
His face darkened instantly.
Samantha knew perfectly well that Diana’s insult included her.
Still, she assumed Diana was simply lashing out because Rose had embarrassed herself today.
Fixing Diana with a cold stare, she said, "Miss Diana, please don’t drag innocent people into this. Oliver didn’t mean any harm."
By then, Rose had already regained her composure.
As soon as she steadied herself, she pulled her hand from Ryan’s grasp as though it had touched something poisonous.
Trevor had already let go.
His touch hadn’t bothered her.
Ryan lowered his eyes briefly, watching her movement. His expression remained unreadable.
Rose turned to Samantha. "Of course he means no harm to you. He’s practically guarding your territory for you. You’ve spoken so kindly on his behalf—it seems you really know how to take care of your people."
It sounded like she was defending Oliver.
In reality, she was exposing Samantha’s motives.
"Rose, you—"
Oliver glared at her.
When it came to verbal attacks, Rose was every bit as ruthless.
"Arguing with a woman is beneath you, Mr. Brown. It makes you look rather petty."
Trevor stepped in front of Rose.
His calm words instantly left Oliver red-faced.
Oliver felt completely stifled.
Trevor then turned toward James, who was still visibly furious.
"Chairman Morris has already made her position clear. Mr. Taylor, let’s end this gracefully and save everyone some dignity."
James’s expression darkened.
Trevor turned to Rose. "Shall we leave first?"
Rose didn’t spare Ryan another glance. "Alright."
Just like that, they walked away.
Not as strangers.
Worse than strangers.
They weren’t even worth exchanging a greeting anymore.
Ryan made no attempt to stop her.
The warmth from Rose’s arm still lingered faintly on his fingertips.
He slipped his hands into his pockets and watched the two figures leave together—one tall, one slender.
For some reason, they seemed unexpectedly compatible.
A strange sense of harmony existed between them.
Ryan narrowed his eyes.
His expression was impossible to read.
"It looks like she’s pretty confident now that she’s managed to catch Mr. Robinson’s attention." Samantha spoke casually.
Ryan said nothing.
James looked even more displeased.
The veins at his temples throbbed visibly.
And to think he had once shown Rose some leniency.
Only to discover she was the very person who had disrupted everything.
"Do you think she’s doing this on purpose?" Oliver frowned. "Going against Ryan so openly? Is she trying to prove she’s still desirable? Or is she deliberately provoking him?"
Samantha immediately studied Ryan’s expression.
Calm.
Composed.
Completely unaffected.
Not a trace of concern.
She quietly breathed a sigh of relief.
Rose’s strategy was foolish.
In the end, she’d gain nothing.
The Knight family would cast her aside.
And the Robinson family would never truly accept a twice-married woman who had already been rejected by the Knights.
It was nothing more than wishful thinking.
Ryan ignored the topic entirely.
Instead, he looked at James. "Have you found the mother of Trevor’s daughter yet?"
James frowned slightly. "Not yet. Trevor may have hidden her too well."
Samantha shrugged. "I don’t think we need to be so pessimistic. The two families haven’t even sat down to discuss things yet. Besides, whether Trevor is sincere about Rose or simply using her is pretty obvious."
She smiled faintly. "He let Rose become the target of Dr. Grace’s anger and damaged the relationship between the two families. Do you really think the Robinson elders will tolerate that? They’ll fall out sooner or later."
Naturally, in Samantha’s version of events, Trevor would eventually be the one to abandon Rose.
After all, Trevor’s status and experience meant he had met countless exceptional women.
Compared to them, Rose had little to offer.
Trevor was a businessman.
He knew how to choose the best option.
James pinched the bridge of his nose.
His anger had yet to subside. "There’s a good chance Trevor planned today’s events from the beginning. My grandmother is proud. Once she saw how determined he was, she chose not to force him."
His eyes darkened. "But if Trevor thinks he’ll get everything he wants this easily, he’s mistaken."
Whether Trevor genuinely liked Rose or was simply using her didn’t matter.
James wasn’t going to let things go smoothly.
Even if the engagement was likely to be dissolved within a month, he intended to make Trevor pay a price first.
If he could find Trevor’s daughter’s biological mother, create enough turmoil, and force Trevor to publicly acknowledge the child, it would derail all of Trevor’s plans.
And perhaps...
Any relationship between Trevor and Rose would collapse on its own.
"Try not to dwell on it."
Samantha offered a comforting smile.
James finally looked at her. "How’s your Ph.D. application coming along?"
A smile appeared on Samantha’s face. "My application materials are almost ready. Dean Byrne should be willing to accept me."
Oliver sneered. "You’re focused on improving yourself, while Rose is busy looking for wealthy men to rely on. No wonder she’s twenty-seven and still has nothing to show for it."
Samantha raised an eyebrow but said nothing.
She clearly agreed.
After all, the NYU School of Medicine was one of the most prestigious medical schools in the country.
It was the dream destination of countless medical students and the training ground for top scholars.
A Ph.D. from NYU School of Medicine carried extraordinary prestige.
Ryan leaned casually against the table, absentmindedly turning a lighter in his hand.
He showed no interest in the discussion.
"Have the licensing rights for the medical database in Aster’s Aetheris Medical AI system been finalized?" James asked, still trying to distract himself.
Samantha nodded. "Yes. It’ll provide tremendous support for our project."
Then she sighed. "The licensing fees are incredibly expensive, though."
More than thirty million dollars per year.
If the project’s profits failed to cover the cost, the money would essentially be flowing straight into G.S.’s pockets.
"Don’t worry." Oliver smiled confidently. "If you become Dean Byrne’s star student, Peace will be backing you. Once the patient-guidance robots are deployed across more than a dozen Peace locations nationwide, the market potential will be enormous."
Samantha finally relaxed.
That was exactly why she had worked so hard.
If she couldn’t gain Dr. Nathan’s support, then she would win over Dean Leo Byrne instead.
Once she had that prestige behind her, the Knight family would have no grounds to reject her.
Even after Ethan officially returned, he wouldn’t be able to make things difficult for her.
*****
Trevor drove Diana back to the television station first.
Only afterward did he take Rose back to G.S.
When they arrived downstairs, Rose unfastened her seatbelt.
Trevor glanced at her.
His voice was steady and calm.
"Rose."
She looked up.
He met her gaze. "Think about me."
