Chapter 142: Chapter 142 A Long History of Being Cheated On

The medical summit was being held at a prestigious hotel in New York.

Both the medical innovation and healthcare research panels had attracted many of the industry’s most influential figures—experts Rose usually only saw in the news.

Since G.S. had received an invitation, Caleb picked Rose up that morning, and the two headed there together.

Rose had never met most of these renowned people in person. Over the past few years, she had spent her time working on the front lines and had little contact with prominent figures in the field. The only exception was Dr. Nathan, who was both her mentor and a close family member.

As a result, she felt a little nervous about suddenly having to interact with so many senior experts.

Caleb noticed her uneasiness and teased, "Should an associate professor really be this nervous? Your academic status isn’t exactly low anymore."

Rose shot him a look.

"How is that the same thing? Wouldn’t you be nervous if you were meeting the Dean of Academic Affairs?"

Compared to those distinguished veterans, she was still a newcomer.

Even if her abilities were enough, her experience and mentality were on an entirely different level.

Knowing Rose’s personality, Caleb simply grabbed her arm and pulled her forward.

"We’re already here, so let’s go make an appearance. You’ll be dealing with these people often in the future. Don’t let them intimidate you. Not every senior scholar is looking out for the younger generation. Some people can’t stand seeing young talent surpass them. Not everyone is like Professor Hale."

In academic circles, mentorship often came down to favors and connections.

Rose was only standing here because she had genuine talent.

For most people, success depended heavily on relationships and influence.

As Leo’s son, Caleb naturally enjoyed certain advantages.

Several people immediately came over to greet him.

Caleb smiled and introduced Rose.

"This is the chief researcher at G.S.—"

"Mr. Knight?"

Before he could finish, someone nearby exclaimed in surprise.

His introduction was cut off.

Clearly, nobody cared about an unfamiliar face like Rose’s. After greeting Caleb warmly, they barely glanced at her before their attention shifted completely to Ryan, who had just entered.

Rose wasn’t surprised by their reaction.

Most of these people were proud and accomplished. Why would they bother getting to know a complete nobody?

She followed their gaze.

Ryan stood out effortlessly in the crowd.

Tall, distinguished, and naturally commanding attention, he carried himself with the effortless confidence of someone accustomed to being at the center of every room.

Standing beside him, Samantha basked in that attention, drawing curious glances from all directions.

Rose hadn’t expected Ryan’s group to come over directly.

The moment he arrived, the center of attention shifted.

Those who had been politely listening to Caleb’s introduction immediately turned toward Ryan, greeting him enthusiastically before asking Samantha with interest,

"And who is this?"

Ryan seemed not to notice Rose at all.

"This is Samantha Hill," he said casually. "She has a pharmaceutical background and currently works in AI healthcare."

Just one simple sentence.

Yet it instantly placed Samantha in the spotlight.

Interest and attention poured toward her.

Maintaining a poised smile, Samantha shook hands with the industry leaders one by one.

"I hope I’ll have the opportunity to work with all of you in the future."

Caleb frowned.

How could he not understand what Ryan was doing?

Ryan was openly helping Samantha build connections—connections that could have benefited Rose.

He was leaving Rose completely out in the cold.

And he clearly didn’t care whether she felt embarrassed.

Rose, however, had long since grown accustomed to this particular form of favoritism from her ex-husband.

It wasn’t lethal.

It was simply painful.

She also understood exactly why Ryan was here today.

He was paving the way for Samantha.

Expanding her network.

Creating opportunities for her future projects.

Increasing her visibility and influence.

"Ms. Hill and Mr. Knight really make a lovely pair," one older professor remarked with a smile. "Are you dating? How long have you known each other?"

Samantha didn’t directly answer the question.

Instead, she smiled shyly—the sweet, bashful smile of a woman in the early stages of a relationship.

"Ryan and I have known each other for several years," she said softly. "We’ve always gotten along very well."

Rose could practically translate Samantha’s meaning in real time.

A long history.

A stable relationship.

Future Mrs. Knight.

Everyone should keep that in mind.

"What are you thinking about?" Caleb asked quietly, worried she might be upset.

Rose withdrew her gaze and replied seriously, "I was thinking that the ’cheated-on husband’ label I’ve been wearing for years belongs in a museum by now. A counterfeit antique—old enough to be valuable, yet somehow still worthless."

Caleb froze.

"..."

Sometimes he genuinely admired Rose’s ability to make fun of her own misery.

Just then, Oliver walked over.

The first thing he noticed was Rose standing nearby, openly watching Ryan and Samantha without making any effort to avoid them.

Immediately, he remembered everything his grandfather had told him.

Rose had supposedly stolen the gratitude Samantha owed the Brown family.

She had taken credit for something that wasn’t hers.

The whole thing struck him as shameless.

He snorted and walked over.

"Some things belong to whoever they belong to," he said pointedly. "Whether it’s a person or a reputation, you can’t just take it because you want it."

He never mentioned any names.

But everyone nearby understood exactly who he was talking about.

Ryan and Samantha heard him as well.

Only then did Ryan seem to notice Rose’s presence.

His gaze swept over her casually.

Samantha, meanwhile, lifted an eyebrow.

She understood immediately.

Oliver was defending her.

He was making it clear that Rose wasn’t worthy of comparison.

And more importantly, he was implying that no matter how hard Rose tried, she could never compete with her.
