Chapter 128: Chapter 128 The Woman Who Saved Mathew
“Watch out.”
Rose was bored out of her mind. She didn’t know anyone, so she could only wander around by herself.
She nearly collided with an elderly man.
Before she could react, the old man suddenly grabbed her hand excitedly.
“It really is you, young lady!”
Rose looked at him in confusion.
She didn’t recognize him.
Seeing the confusion in her eyes, Mathew realized she didn’t remember him at all. He quickly explained, “The resort. The free medical clinic. You saved an old man there—it was me. Do you remember?”
At that, Rose began to recall the incident.
He had even vomited on her back then.
Her eyes widened in surprise. “What are you doing here?”
The anger Mathew had been carrying moments ago vanished instantly.

“I’m the guest of honor today. Young lady, what’s your name? Did Oliver invite you, or are you here representing a particular family?”
He reasoned that if Rose hadn’t been invited by Oliver, she must have been attending as a representative of another prominent family.
He was certain he knew the family she represented.
“I—”
“Mr. Brown, the dignitaries have arrived. You’d better head over,” the steward said hurriedly in a low voice.
Rose vaguely heard that a high-ranking government official had arrived.
Mathew’s expression immediately turned serious.
He looked at Rose and said solemnly, “Young lady, I’ll have someone arrange a seat for you in the VIP section. Grandpa will come find you later, all right?”
Rose nodded.
Only then did Mathew hurry away.
Watching his retreating figure, Rose couldn’t help but marvel at the coincidence.
He was actually Oliver’s grandfather.
But when she thought about Oliver...
Rose frowned.
Just another spoiled rich kid hopelessly devoted to Samantha.
She turned and headed toward the main hall.
After Rose left, Samantha slowly emerged from the restroom in the back.
Her face was deathly pale, and the hand clutching a tissue trembled slightly.
No wonder the old man had been so cold toward her.
So Rose was the one who had saved him all along.
And yet she had...
Samantha bit her lip.
Her eyes flickered with fear, embarrassment, and anger.
After all, she had already made a terrible impression on Mathew.
She even wondered if Rose had deliberately appeared at this moment just to make things difficult for her.
*****
Rose looked around.
The guests were seated according to status and influence.
She understood perfectly well that in this circle, people were not treated equally. Wealth, power, and connections determined everything, and no one questioned it.
The VIP section was naturally the most prestigious area.
Just moments earlier, Rose had been wondering where she should sit.
After all, Ryan had arrived with Samantha.
There was clearly no place reserved for her at his side.
Since Mathew had arranged a seat for her in the VIP section, she headed there first.

The moment she arrived, she met Samantha’s icy gaze.
Samantha looked her up and down before her eyes settled on the brooch pinned to Rose’s chest.
Her expression shifted. “Take off that brooch. It’s inappropriate.”
Rose hadn’t expected such a blunt command the moment she sat down.
Before she could respond, someone nearby spoke up.
“What a coincidence. It’s exactly the same as Mr. Knight’s brooch.”
Rose’s gaze immediately shifted to the man seated elegantly nearby, casually sipping his drink.
On the lapel of his black suit was a sapphire butterfly brooch.
The gemstone sparkled brilliantly beneath the lights.
At another table, a woman looked at Rose strangely.
“That’s a limited-edition couple’s set from a luxury brand. Only eighteen pairs were released worldwide. They’re nearly impossible to get. But... the odds of accidentally matching someone else’s boyfriend are pretty low.”
She might as well have said outright that Rose had done it on purpose.
Everyone knew Ryan had attended with Samantha today.
Now a woman appeared wearing the matching piece of a rare couple’s set.
The coincidence was difficult to ignore.
“Exactly. Mr. Knight’s sapphire brooch matches Ms. Hill’s blue dress—not yours.”
“And don’t forget, she’s wearing blue too. Even if she couldn’t change dresses, she could at least remove the brooch.”
This social circle had always been hostile toward women who lacked official status.
Naturally, they banded together and “looked out for one another.”
Rose nearly laughed.
According to them, she had somehow become the other woman.
If it had been someone else, they might have fled in humiliation under such public scrutiny.
But not Rose.
She calmly took her seat.
“You all claim they’re a couple,” she said evenly, “so why isn’t Ms. Hill wearing a brooch?”
Samantha pressed her lips together.
Her displeasure was obvious.
“Her dress is already perfectly coordinated. Besides, a brooch doesn’t suit the style of her gown. Mr. Knight specifically chose a sapphire to complement her blue dress. That’s enough. That’s their romance.”
Of course, Rose knew that when people wanted to criticize someone, they could twist any argument to support their narrative.
She glanced at Ryan.
He remained seated, completely detached from the women’s conversation.
His posture never changed.
He didn’t seem bothered by being the topic of discussion.
Even as Rose was criticized, pressured, and urged to remove her brooch, he remained silent.
As though he agreed with them.
Yet the brooch had nothing to do with him.
It had been a gift from Trevor.

A thoughtful gift given in good faith.
She would never allow others to tarnish its meaning.
“If Mr. Knight isn’t satisfied,” Rose said calmly, “he’s welcome to throw away his own brooch. That would save Ms. Hill the embarrassment.”
Her tone was mild.
Her words were not.
Only then did Ryan finally look at her.
Before he could speak, Samantha casually reached up and brushed her fingertips across the brooch pinned to Ryan’s lapel.
Smiling graciously, she said, “There’s really no need to make such a fuss over something so trivial. I actually love this style on Ryan. We picked it out together because it suits him perfectly.”
The surrounding crowd immediately praised her.
“Ms. Hill is so generous.”
“No wonder Chairman Knight is wearing it. Ms. Hill personally helped choose it.”
Rose suddenly understood.
No wonder Ryan had left so early this morning and had been impossible to reach.
He had been shopping with Samantha.
She had helped him coordinate his outfit.
The two of them had spent the day together.
And somehow, Rose had become the scheming woman trying to force her way into someone else’s spotlight.
She glanced at Ryan.
He happened to look back at her.
Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed the brooch pinned to her chest and narrowed his eyes slightly.
Rose pressed her lips together.
She didn’t care what anyone else thought.
But she certainly didn’t want Ryan believing she had worn it intentionally.
Seeing that Rose had no intention of retreating, Samantha silently frowned.
She had assumed that after being publicly embarrassed, Rose would leave immediately.
That would have made it easier for her to explain herself to Mathew later.
But Rose remained seated.
Completely unmoved.
Just then, the sharp tap of a cane echoed from behind.
Everyone turned.
Mathew had arrived.
And he did not look pleased.
As he approached, he had overheard enough of the conversation.
So this was the “shady character” Grace had mentioned?
Not only had she stolen credit, but she was now bullying another young woman in public.

His expression darkened.
Samantha felt a chill run down her spine.
After all, there was still the matter of taking credit for someone else’s rescue.
She had already planned to apologize and claim she had simply remembered incorrectly.
Surely Mathew wouldn’t make things difficult for her in front of Ryan.
Samantha rose obediently.
“Mr. Brown.”
Mathew looked at her expressionlessly.
His voice was calm, but every word landed like a hammer.
“Not just anyone is qualified to sit in the VIP section.”
He paused. “My venue is too small to accommodate someone like you.”
“Please leave.”
