Chapter 126: Chapter 126 The Mistaken Mrs. Knight

It was a call from Margaret.

Rose had long since realized that people of Margaret’s status could find out almost anything they wanted—including her new phone number.

She answered the call.

Margaret didn’t waste time with pleasantries.

“What time are you coming today?”

“I’ll be there shortly,” Rose replied.

“Is Ryan with you?”

Rose hesitated for a moment, about to say yes, when Margaret snorted coldly.

“What’s he off doing now?”

“You both need to be there today. Otherwise, what will people think?”

By now, Rose had learned how to be tactful. She no longer openly challenged Margaret.

“Alright,” she agreed.

After ending the call, Rose sat there for a long moment.

In the end, she decided to call Ryan.

Even though she knew he hadn’t saved her new number, she felt obligated to make the effort.

As expected, he didn’t answer.

He had left early that morning and hadn’t even eaten breakfast with her.

She had no idea whether he was genuinely busy or simply choosing to ignore her.

Since she couldn’t reach him, she had no choice but to head there alone.

The Brown family patriarch’s birthday celebration was a grand affair. They had reserved the entire resort hotel—banquet halls, guest suites, and entertainment facilities—to accommodate guests who had traveled from all over the country.

Rose drove herself.

After nearly an hour and a half on the highway, she finally arrived.

Luxury cars filled the parking lot.

Waiters hurried back and forth, bustling with activity.

Unfamiliar with the venue, Rose wanted to see whether Ryan had already arrived.

Meanwhile, guests continued to pour in.

The atmosphere was lively and festive.

In a private lounge, Matthew leaned on his cane and shot Oliver a cold look.

“Didn’t you say you knew the young lady who saved my life back then? Invite her over. I still haven’t had the chance to thank her properly.”

Oliver laughed helplessly. “Grandpa, you still remember that?”

Matthew tapped Oliver sharply on the leg with his cane.

“What kind of attitude is that? How can anyone be so ungrateful? Stop fooling around. The Brown family owes that young lady a tremendous debt of gratitude—one that can never truly be repaid.”

If it hadn’t been for her back then...

He wouldn’t be celebrating his birthday today.

He would have been long gone, with nothing left but family memories.

Oliver quickly surrendered. “I invited her, I invited her. She’ll be here soon. Once you meet her in person, you’ll like her even more. I’ll go pick her up right now, okay?”

Only then did Matthew look satisfied.

He had been looking forward to this for a long time.

Earlier, Oliver had promised to thank his savior on his behalf.

Today was finally his chance to do it properly.

Not daring to delay any longer, Oliver hurried outside.

The old man had a terrible temper and expected immediate results whenever he gave an order.

The moment he stepped outside, he pulled out his phone and made a call.

Meanwhile, Rose was making her way through the resort.

Guests clustered in small groups, chatting and laughing.

Many had flown in from different cities and states.

The grounds were enormous, and it took her quite a while to find the main banquet hall.

Just as she was about to call Ryan again, she heard someone rush past her.

“The CEO of Kingswell is here! Hurry and see if you can catch a glimpse of him!”

Rose frowned.

Although she had already suspected Ryan had arrived without informing her, having it confirmed still left a bitter taste in her mouth.

If he didn’t want to arrive together, he could have simply told her.

Instead, he had left her completely in the dark.

Following the crowd’s gaze, she looked over.

Then she froze.

Ryan was already surrounded by people beneath the veranda.

And standing beside him...

Was Samantha.

The two were exchanging pleasantries with the guests, looking every bit like a newlywed couple.

Dressed in an elegant midnight-blue evening gown, Samantha wore a sweet, captivating smile as she held Ryan’s arm.

Together, they looked like the perfect couple everyone admired.

At such a formal event...

They had invited Rose, yet never saved a place for her.

They had openly made her an outsider, forcing her to watch from the sidelines.

A lump seemed to lodge itself in her throat.

She swallowed several times before finally forcing down the faint yet unmistakable sense of humiliation.

She couldn’t help wondering—

If Ryan had already decided to bring Samantha, why insist on making her come as well?

Who, exactly, was the extra person here?

No wonder he hadn’t answered her calls.

From the very beginning, he had already chosen Samantha as his companion.

That was why he ignored her.

In her daze, Rose noticed Samantha looking her way.

A trace of mockery flashed across Samantha’s eyes as she swept her gaze over Rose from head to toe.

Then she leaned toward Ryan and whispered something into his ear.

Her posture was confident and composed, carrying all the poise of a legitimate wife.

Rose glanced down at her own blue dress.

Its color was strikingly similar to Samantha’s.

Now, she felt ridiculous.

Like a clown.

She didn’t walk over.

She knew better.

Even when they had still been married, she had never caused a public scene.

What would be the point now?

Marching over and demanding to know why Ryan had brought his mistress here?

It would only make her look like the one without a place or a title.

The corner of Rose’s lips curled into a bitter smile as she turned and walked inside.

She really had been naïve.

She had thought Ryan no longer cared about hiding her identity.

She had thought that after seven years—and right when they were divorcing—he had finally decided to give her the status she deserved.

But it turned out he had never intended to have her by his side at all.

The person he wanted beside him was Samantha.

“Where’s Oliver?” Samantha made no mention of seeing Rose.

Looking up at Ryan with a charming smile, she said, “He’s called me several times already. Now that we’re here, he’s nowhere to be found.”

Ryan glanced around. “Let’s go inside first.”

Samantha nodded, her spirits high.

The Brown family was one of the most influential families in the country.

She had long wanted to establish a relationship with them.

Especially since Oliver had told her she was his grandfather’s lifesaver.

The Brown family would undoubtedly treat her as an honored guest.

Together, they entered the main hall.

There were even more people inside.

Samantha smoothed her hair and said softly, “I’d like to go greet Mr. Brown first. Ryan, would you take me there?”

If Ryan introduced her personally, Matthew would surely think more highly of her.

Ryan’s eyes darkened briefly, but he didn’t refuse.

Matthew had a private lounge.

When Ryan and Samantha knocked and entered, the old man’s smile immediately broadened at the sight of Ryan.

“Ryan, you’re here.”

Then he added, “Your grandmother told me you’d be bringing your wife today.”

Matthew turned toward Samantha.

His smile remained warm.

For the briefest moment, Samantha’s expression stiffened.

But she quickly recovered and smiled politely.

“Hello, Mr. Brown.”

She neither corrected him nor confirmed it.

It was almost as though she were silently accepting the identity for herself.

Seeing the two arrive together, Matthew naturally assumed Samantha was the elusive Mrs. Knight.

His smile became even friendlier. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. Margaret has praised her granddaughter-in-law more than once.”

A flash of resentment crossed Samantha’s heart, but she concealed it perfectly.

Smiling sweetly, she said, “Mr. Brown, this actually isn’t our first meeting. Have you forgotten? I was the one who administered emergency treatment to you at the resort.”

Matthew’s expression froze.

His eyes narrowed as he stared at Samantha.

“What did you just say?” he asked slowly
