Chapter 108: Chapter 108 Margaret’s Final Condition
There was a significant time difference between China and the United States.
Rose hadn’t received a reply from Trevor yet.
For now, all she could do was wait patiently.
When the kindergarten event ended, Rose didn’t leave immediately.
She watched as a group of wealthy women chatted and laughed with Samantha while walking toward the parking lot.
Ryan escorted Samantha to the car and opened the door for her like a perfect gentleman.
Thoughtful.
Attentive.
Considerate.
Once again, the gesture earned him envious glances from the women around them.
Feeling their admiration, Samantha couldn’t help but smile softly.
She cast Ryan a lingering, affectionate look before waving goodbye and getting into the car.
Rose watched the display of affection as though she were a complete outsider.
In truth, her heart no longer stirred at the sight.
The only thing she cared about was making sure Ryan had left the kindergarten.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving first.
Only after watching his car disappear did Rose finally climb into her Range Rover.
She hadn’t expected Trevor to reply.
Yet just then, her phone buzzed.
Trevor: Have you decided to get divorced?
Instead of answering her question, he asked one of his own.
Rose had never told Trevor that her husband was Ryan.
Given Ryan’s status, she preferred to avoid unnecessary complications.
Diana certainly wouldn’t mention it either.
As for whether Trevor had investigated her background, Rose didn’t think so.
After all, he wasn’t anyone particularly close to her.
Why would he be interested in her personal affairs?
She replied:
Rose: I’ll be getting the divorce certificate tomorrow.
This time, Trevor responded almost immediately.
Trevor: All right. I’ll be back no later than next week.
A few moments later, another message appeared.
Trevor: Congratulations.
Rose stared at the word.
A complicated warmth spread through her chest.
It felt as though she could finally see light at the end of a long tunnel.
Tomorrow.
Everything would finally be over.
For the first time in a very long while, she felt genuine relief.
And anticipation.
After replying with a simple thank you, Rose returned her attention to her work at G.S.
The clinical trials were entering their final stage.
Regulatory approval was just around the corner.
Although she could develop many drugs like this one, her current focus was on the prototype medical robot, which had successfully secured funding.
After working late into the evening, Rose returned to her apartment.
There were still divorce documents and related paperwork she needed to organize before everything became official.
*****
The next morning, Rose woke up early.
Her thoughts had kept her awake most of the night.
She washed up quickly and headed straight to the courthouse.
Only after obtaining the divorce certificate could Ariel’s registration be transferred into her name.
She had been waiting for this day for a very long time.
Once Trevor returned to the country, everything could finally be resolved.
Warmth rose in her chest.
Her fingers tightened around the steering wheel.
She arrived at the courthouse shortly before nine o’clock.
After parking, she took out her phone and called Ryan.
Although she had changed her number and no longer had his contact information saved, there was a certain irony to it all.
She still remembered his number by heart.
After all these years, it felt permanently engraved in her memory.
The realization almost made her laugh.
At least she’d finally recovered from being hopelessly in love with him.
What a relief.
She dialed the number.
The line rang several times before a recording played.
"We’re sorry. The number you have dialed is no longer in service."
Rose frowned.
For a moment, she thought she’d misdialed.
She checked the number again.
It was correct.
Even if Ryan had blocked her, he could only have blocked her old number.
There was no way he could have known her new one.
There was only one explanation.
He had changed his number.
Rose stared at her phone for a long moment before letting out a disbelieving laugh.
Apparently, Ryan wanted the same thing she did.
A clean break from the past.
Complete severance.
No ties whatsoever.
Pressing her lips together, Rose felt a dull ache forming in her temples.
Today was important.
Not being able to reach him naturally irritated her.
Suppressing her frustration, she called Owen.
As the chief assistant to the president of Kingswell Group, Owen was normally highly efficient.
But this time—
No answer.
Rose nearly cursed aloud.
She had been in a good mood all morning.
Now she was furious.
After a moment’s thought, she got out of the car.
When she and Ryan had arranged the divorce, they had gone through a special expedited channel.
Even if he wasn’t present, the paperwork should still be available.
At the service counter, Rose handed over her documents.
"I’m here to collect my divorce certificate."
The clerk glanced up. "Why isn’t your husband here?"
Rose nearly rolled her eyes.
How am I supposed to know where he’s disappeared to?
Despite her irritation, she maintained her composure.
"Please check the system. This case was processed through a special channel."
The clerk conducted a search.
A moment later, they looked up.
"Ma’am, the divorce certificate has already been collected."
Rose froze. "What?"
"It’s already been picked up."
Her heartbeat abruptly accelerated. "By whom?"
"I’m sorry, but the system only indicates that it was processed through a special procedure. I don’t have access to further details."
A cold sense of dread washed over her.
Ariel’s registration transfer required the divorce certificate.
Without it, she couldn’t establish herself as Ariel’s legal guardian.
Without legal proof of the divorce, the entire plan would come to a standstill.
Rose rushed out of the building.
Panicked, she headed for her car.
She needed to go to Kingswell and get answers from Ryan.
Just as she opened the door, her phone rang.
The moment she saw the familiar landline number, a chill ran down her spine.
Everything suddenly became clear.
*****
A long while later, Rose arrived at the Knight family’s old estate.
Margaret preferred solitude.
She rarely allowed her daughters-in-law, Selena and Isabella, to visit unless necessary.
When Rose entered the house, Margaret was lying in bed.
The family doctor had only recently left.
Her blood pressure appeared unstable, and her lips carried a faint purplish tint.
The moment she saw Rose, Margaret began coughing violently.
Disappointment filled her eyes.
"Rose," she said hoarsely, "you actually joined forces with Ryan to deceive an old woman like me."
Rose’s hands and feet turned cold.
Keeping her back straight, she walked forward one step at a time.
"Grandma, please give me my divorce certificate."
No matter what happened, she needed that certificate.
Without it, Ariel’s registration couldn’t be transferred.
Without the transfer, she couldn’t legally secure Ariel as her daughter.
Everything she had planned would become meaningless.
She had calculated every detail carefully.
She never imagined something would go wrong at the very last moment.
The divorce certificate...
Had been intercepted.
Margaret studied the determination in Rose’s eyes.
"Are you truly determined to do this?"
Her gaze sharpened. "What’s the real reason? What could possibly make you insist on divorce at all costs? Don’t tell me it’s simply because of marital unhappiness. You’ve endured seven years. Why can’t you endure a little longer?"
Margaret had once been one of the most formidable women in the business world.
Her mind remained as sharp as ever.
Of course, Rose couldn’t tell her the truth.
She couldn’t say the divorce was tied to a hidden child.
Her fingers tightened around the fabric of her skirt.
"Enduring something for seven years doesn’t mean I have to endure it forever," she said quietly.
"What’s tasteless isn’t worth keeping, and I won’t miss it once it’s gone."
She met Margaret’s eyes. "Grandma, a forced marriage will never become a happy one."
Margaret stared at her for several seconds. "If that’s your only answer—an answer that ignores the family’s interests—then I cannot return the divorce certificate."
Rose had expected this.
On her way here, she had already prepared herself.
Margaret’s opposition to the divorce had reached an almost obsessive level.
What she couldn’t understand was why.
"How can I get it back?" Rose asked.
The gratitude she once felt toward Margaret was gradually disappearing.
Even her voice had turned noticeably colder.
Margaret leaned back against her pillow.
"Within three months."
Rose’s expression froze.
"If you conceive a child for the Knight family, I’ll let you go."
Margaret gently patted Rose’s ice-cold hand.
Her expression remained kind.
Her words, however, were merciless.
"Otherwise..."
She paused. "You used special channels to hide this divorce from me."
A faint smile appeared on her face. "Well, I can use special channels to revoke that divorce certificate."
Rose’s head snapped up.
Her lips pressed tightly together.
For the first time, genuine shock appeared in her eyes.
