Chapter 106: Chapter 106 The Little Girl Who Saw Through Him
She didn’t explain who Ariel’s parents were.
After all, both of Ariel’s parents were alive.
Ryan was simply busy playing the role of a father to someone else’s child.
When Rose said that, Ryan offered no response.
Instead, he continued studying Ariel thoughtfully.
The intensity of his attention made Rose deeply uncomfortable.
An alarm immediately sounded in her mind.
Not giving him a chance to ask any further questions, she took Ariel’s hand and led her straight into the classroom.
The classroom was spacious, with an open area in the center reserved for games and parent-child activities.
Rose deliberately chose a spot far from the crowd.
Fortunately, Mike kept Ryan occupied.
He simply didn’t have the time to pay attention to her and Ariel.
Only then did Rose finally breathe a sigh of relief.
The games soon began.
From across the room, Rose spotted Ryan standing at the center of the crowd.
Although Mike was both tall and overweight for his age, Ryan lifted him effortlessly to complete the activity.
Nearby, Samantha smiled and cheered them on.
She looked every bit the gentle wife and loving mother.
Anyone watching would have assumed they were a perfectly happy family.
Several mothers gathered around Samantha, openly admiring her.
"Your husband is so patient with children. And he’s incredibly handsome—I honestly thought he was a celebrity."
A smile immediately appeared in Samantha’s eyes.
"Him?" she said lightly. "He’s always been very responsible."
She made no attempt to correct the word husband.
Out of the corner of her eye, she glanced toward Rose.
Lifting her chin slightly, she allowed a trace of smugness to show.
"Look at you two. There are hardly any dads here today. Your husband’s clothes alone look expensive, and that watch must be worth several million dollars. You can tell he’s no ordinary man. For someone so successful to spend so much time with his wife and child—that’s really something to envy."
Another mother immediately joined in.
"With genes like his, you’ve only had one child? What a waste! You should have more."
Samantha raised an eyebrow.
An older mother laughed knowingly.
"Exactly. Have a few more. Men get attached through their children. Once there are kids involved, they won’t wander off. Besides, you’re beautiful enough already."
A hint of embarrassment crossed Samantha’s face.
"You’re all too kind."
As for the rest of the comments, she simply let them stand.
Rose lowered her gaze and gently covered Ariel’s ear.
"Sweetie, do you want to play another game later?"
Although Ariel didn’t understand why her ears were being covered, she obediently nodded.
Meanwhile, Mike had already finished his activity.
The moment he saw Ariel, he ran over.
"Aren’t your parents here with you?" he asked with a grin. "That’s so pathetic. Don’t you have a dad?"
At those words, Ariel’s face immediately reddened.
Confusion and hurt flashed through her innocent eyes.
Still, she instinctively tightened her grip on Rose’s hand.
"I don’t need a dad," she said quietly. "As long as I have my mom, that’s enough."
Mike only became more arrogant.
"So you really don’t have one? Isn’t that basically the same as being an orphan? Nobody protects you. Unlike me. I’m the happiest kid in the whole kindergarten today."
Ariel remained silent.
Her eyes turned red, but she neither cried nor threw a tantrum.
Rose couldn’t help wondering how thoroughly the Hill family had spoiled this little brat.
Especially when he used the word orphan.
The word struck directly at the most vulnerable place in her heart.
The truth was that Ariel’s father wasn’t absent.
He had simply chosen to place others above his own family.
Rose’s expression turned cold.
Fixing Mike with a stern look, she spoke in the same firm tone adults often used to discipline children.
"If you bully Ariel again, I’ll tell every child in this kindergarten that your sister stole someone else’s husband and that you’re the little brother of a homewrecker. Every kid will look down on you. They’ll avoid you, and nobody will want to be your friend."
Mike froze.
His chubby face instantly turned bright red.
He hurriedly looked around to make sure no other children had heard.
Rose nearly laughed.
Look at that.
People always say children don’t understand these things.
But even he knew his sister’s behavior was wrong and embarrassing.
"Rose!"
Samantha had arrived just in time to hear the exchange.
Her face darkened. "Is it really necessary to speak to a child like that? Does bullying a little boy make you feel accomplished?"
Ryan glanced over as well.
Rose merely shrugged.
"Oh?"
Then she said calmly, "If you keep shouting, the entire school will find out how proud you are to be someone’s mistress."
Samantha’s expression immediately stiffened.
A flash of anger crossed her face.
In her eyes, Rose was simply jealous and lashing out.
At the same time, Rose felt Ryan’s gaze settle on her.
Deep.
Unreadable.
She knew perfectly well that even if she announced right there that she was Mrs. Knight, Ryan wouldn’t acknowledge it.
He would only stand beside Samantha and leave her looking foolish.
At least she had enough self-awareness to understand that.
Ignoring them completely, she took Ariel’s hand and walked away.
Ariel immediately cooperated.
Her little face was serious as she marched forward beside Rose, refusing to look back even once.
From the corner of his eye, Ryan watched the small figure disappear.
He stood there silently for several seconds.
*****
The kindergarten was crowded that day.
Worried Ariel might get thirsty, Rose told her to wait in the hallway while she went to retrieve her thermos from a nearby storage cabinet.
The moment Rose left, Ryan stepped out of a classroom.
He had just finished handling a work call.
After hanging up, he noticed Ariel sitting quietly on a chair in the hallway, her head lowered as she played with a Rubik’s Cube.
His steps came to an abrupt halt.
Without thinking, he changed direction and walked toward her.
Ariel looked up.
Her large black eyes were calm and clear.
There was no curiosity in them.
Still, out of politeness, she greeted him.
"Hello, Uncle."
The little girl’s soft voice was irresistibly sweet.
For some reason, that simple greeting caused something in Ryan’s chest to stir.
He couldn’t explain it.
He simply found the child unusually likable.
Ryan sat down beside her.
"You..."
He paused, choosing his words carefully.
"Where did Aunt Rose go?"
Ariel looked confused.
She almost said that’s my mom.
But remembering the game she’d promised to play with her mother, she immediately corrected herself.
Looking back down at her Rubik’s Cube, she replied softly, "She went to get me some water."
Ryan’s gaze fell on the faint dimple that appeared whenever she spoke.
"Are you close to her?"
Ariel thought the question was strange.
Of course she and her mom were close.
They were best friends.
More importantly, this uncle seemed unusually interested in her mother’s affairs.
Immediately, Ariel became cautious.
"Uncle, why are you so curious about our family?"
It was an innocent question.
Yet it made Ryan raise an eyebrow.
For a moment, he found himself at a loss.
"Because I know Aunt Rose."
A dozen questions immediately appeared in Ariel’s little head.
Tilting her head, she looked at him seriously.
Then she asked the one that puzzled her most.
"If you’re her friend, why didn’t you help us when that auntie and Mike were being mean to us?"
Ryan was caught off guard.
This little girl was remarkably perceptive.
Even at her age, she had a way of cutting straight to the heart of a matter.
He narrowed his eyes slightly. "She didn’t tell me she needed help."
Ariel carefully put her Rubik’s Cube aside.
Pouting, she muttered, "My mom says candy you have to ask for never tastes sweet anyway. It’s better not to have it."
Ryan’s gaze deepened.
He studied her delicate little face for a long moment.
Then he asked quietly, "Can I ask you another question?"
"I’ll answer selectively."
Ryan was genuinely surprised.
For such a young child, she was extraordinarily independent-minded.
"Who are your parents?"
