Chapter 49: You're the Protagonist

The school sports event had made Wen Yang even more popular, attracting the attention of many of the school’s proactive female supporting characters.

Fortunately, the number of these girls wasn’t as large as Ning Chu had feared.

Although this was essentially a male-oriented harem story, with each individual arc introducing a new female character, the number of women tied to Wen Yang still didn’t exceed a hundred. About half of them were currently on campus, and of those, only a portion were actively pursuing him.

When Ning Chu calculated it, she realized that she had already met most of them.

The only worry was the small group that might rush all at once—dealing with one girl per day was already exhausting for her.

It wasn't just about the risk of social death; her body couldn’t handle the constant qing energy being aimed at her!

"Why do you always look so unhappy?"

In the afternoon, as Ning Chu exited the bathroom, Wen Yang caught her by surprise.

She glanced up at Wen Yang, who was busy washing his clothes, then quickly looked away, muttering, "It's... it’s nothing."

Ever since being interrogated by Yan Xinya, Ning Chu couldn’t help but blush with guilt every time she saw Wen Yang.

"Remember to eat breakfast while I’m away," Wen Yang reminded her while scrubbing his laundry. "You might have low blood sugar. You fainted during military training because you skipped meals."

"Yeah," Ning Chu responded, leaning against the railing, eyes focused on her phone.

“I’ll bring back some special snacks from my hometown for you to try.”

“Oh, by the way, do you want to come see me off at the bus station?”

Ning Chu froze for a second, then pouted. "It’s only four days. What’s the point of a send-off? It’s a waste of my time."

As if she hadn’t been looking at him with such longing during class.

Wen Yang could feel Ning Chu’s growing dependence on him. As they spent more time together, it only seemed to deepen.

Yet, somehow, his confession last week had failed...

Clearly, there was something Ning Chu wasn’t satisfied with, something he wasn’t good enough at.

“I need to go to Xinya’s dorm to arrange my bed. I’ll bring some things over early.”

“Alright.”

“Hold up! No way!”

Zhang Shaoqing suddenly burst through the door, looking at Ning Chu in disbelief. "Are you seriously moving into the girls’ dorm?"

"Yeah, just for four days. What’s the big deal?"

"You’re out of your mind!"

“...”

At first, Ning Chu didn’t think much of it, but then it hit her—Zhang Shaoqing still saw her as a man.

Her face flushed uncomfortably as she struggled to find a reasonable explanation.

“Must be nice being pretty. You can live in the girls’ dorm and no one even bats an eye,” Zhang Shaoqing exclaimed in awe. “Lucky there’s no communal showers over there, or you’d be the type to sneak into the girls’ bath, wouldn’t you?”

Says the guy who’s a certified perv!

“Wait, why’s that wolf-girl letting you live there?”

“Because I’m trustworthy, and they believe in me.”

“Yeah, right! I know what guys are like. Don’t pretend you’re any different.” Zhang Shaoqing’s face was full of envy. “That wolf-girl must be dumb, actually treating you like a bestie.”

He hurried over to Ning Chu, putting a sleazy arm around her shoulders. "Hey, make sure to share any juicy details with your buddy if you see something interesting."

Ning Chu tensed up, instinctively trying to shake off Zhang Shaoqing’s arm, but she didn’t want to seem too aggressive.

Luckily, Wen Yang put down the laundry he was washing and grabbed Zhang Shaoqing by the neck, pulling him away. "Cut it out, stop thinking about such things. Want to grab a bubble tea?"

Ning Chu quickly stepped away from the two, letting out a sigh of relief.

“You’re treating me to bubble tea?” Zhang Shaoqing was surprised by Wen Yang’s generosity.

"Once in a while, I like to live a little. I’ll just get the cheapest one."

Zhang Shaoqing had no objections and eagerly started ordering, but he didn’t stop asking questions. "Why are you moving into the girls’ dorm all of a sudden?"

Ning Chu had already thought of a suitable excuse by then. "Well, Xinya said some pervert’s been stealing her underwear, and she’s been losing sleep over it."

She said it with a mix of truth and exaggeration, sounding righteous. "As a man, how could I sit by and do nothing when I hear about something like that? I’m going to keep Xinya and Lily safe and help catch the pervert!"

“That wolf-girl could probably punch you into next week.”

Zhang Shaoqing reluctantly accepted the explanation, shaking his head. “Must be nice being feminine—you can act as creepy as you want, and the girls still don’t think anything’s wrong.”

“Your perviness has nothing to do with me!”

“Don’t get anyone pregnant, alright?”

“Get lost!”

It’s not like I even have the equipment for that anymore...

Ning Chu sighed to herself. Even when she had still been a man, it wasn’t like her assets had ever been of much use anyway.

She headed into the dorm room and glanced at Wang Jie, who was peacefully absorbed in his computer, causing no trouble.

This guy was reliable. No fuss, no problems, no annoying teasing.

Moving to the girls’ dorm didn’t really require much preparation. Her suitcase was already packed full—clothes, toiletries, cash, her ID...everything was in place, just in case she ever needed to make a quick getaway.

That had been her plan... But now, without solving her qing issues, she could only stick to Wen Yang’s side for safety.

If she ever really ended up being taken by Wen Yang... well, that would still be better than becoming a battle-crazed protagonist and getting into even worse trouble.

"Mainly just need my bedding..."

Ning Chu muttered, digging out her thick winter comforter from the back of her closet.

“And Wen Yang’s clothes...”

In moments of anxiety, Wen Yang’s clothes gave her a sense of security.

Besides, they seemed to be charged with some kind of protagonist’s aura that actually worked wonders!

So, without hesitation, Ning Chu headed for Wen Yang’s wardrobe, opening the door and eyeing the clothes inside.

Hmm... A shirt, a t-shirt, and a jacket...

“What are you doing in my wardrobe?” Wen Yang had just finished hanging up his laundry when he saw Ning Chu rifling through his clothes.

“Your clothes are big and comfortable. I’m borrowing some to use as pajamas.”

Wen Yang scratched his head in confusion.

Ning Chu seemed to have a particular fondness for his clothes, especially his jackets.

“We’re close enough, what’s the big deal about borrowing some clothes?” Ning Chu asked, self-assured.

“No big deal, take whatever you need.”

Wen Yang didn’t mind, but Zhang Shaoqing, on the other hand, muttered in disgust, “So gay...”

Ignoring his nonsense, Ning Chu stuffed the clothes into her suitcase, grabbed her thick comforter, and staggered to her feet, heading for the door.

“Need a hand?”

“Of course!”

She shoved the heavy comforter into Wen Yang’s arms, dragging her suitcase as she pushed open the door.

Now, the only thing left to deal with was that underwear-stealing pervert.

Luckily, the protagonist was right behind her.

Ning Chu turned to look at Wen Yang. "Hey, don’t leave yet. I need your help with something."

“What is it?”

“Catching the underwear thief!”

Wen Yang looked even more confused. “Me? But we haven’t found him yet.”

“Exactly. You’ll come with me to the scene. Maybe you’ll notice something.”

“You’re treating me like a detective now?”

But Ning Chu’s faith in him didn’t waver. "You’re the protagonist, after all!"

“Protagonist?”
