Chapter 22: The Infirmary

Wen Yang's cramped calf still throbbed with intense pain, and he had twisted his ankle when he fell, leaving his left leg almost useless. He had no choice but to drape his arm around Ning Chu's shoulder, limping as they made their way off the sports field.

This was the first time Wen Yang had been so close to Ning Chu. Despite the pain in his body, his mind couldn’t help but wander into inappropriate thoughts.

Ning Chu’s body was so soft.

Her skin was smooth, delicate, and cool to the touch.

The faint, fresh scent of a young girl was incredibly comforting.

And that frightened, on-the-verge-of-tears expression of hers was just too cute.

Wen Yang stole a glance at Ning Chu. Even though he was trying to walk on his own, his weight still bore down on her, making her expression more worried and serious. Yet, she gritted her teeth and did her best to support him.

That stubborn, tense little face was adorable too~

He knew he shouldn’t be thinking about these strange things at a time like this, so he avoided looking directly at Ning Chu, feeling guilty.

“Where did Xinya disappear to at a time like this?” Ning Chu was panting heavily from the effort. “When we need her, she’s nowhere to be found.”

Her view was blocked by Wen Yang, so she could only see ahead and to the left, unaware that Yan Xinya was leisurely following right behind Wen Yang.

When Wen Yang glanced back, he saw Yan Xinya mouthing the words, “Go for it.”

“Shaoqing and Wang Jie are gone too! Where did they run off to?”

Ning Chu tried to find someone to help, but couldn’t spot any familiar faces.

“Maybe they sneaked back to the dorms?”

“You too! You should have warmed up before the race! Who just runs without stretching? Of course you’d cramp up!” She babbled on, her tone a mix of scolding and concern. “Look at you now, your knee and hands are bleeding. Who knows how long it’ll take to heal?”

“Can’t you be more careful?”

“We’re not doing any more events today, no more!”

“You’re so tall, a fall like that could’ve been serious. What if something worse happened...”

Throughout all this, Ning Chu didn’t care if Wen Yang felt embarrassed—only Wen Yang, with his flushed face, was too ashamed to look at the students around them.

“Did you hear me?”

Wen Yang quickly nodded. “Okay, okay, no more events.”

As they slowly made their way off the field, the pain in his calf had mostly subsided.

“It’s not that bad now. I can walk on my own.”

“No way!” Ning Chu firmly pressed Wen Yang’s hand back onto her shoulder. “What if you fall again? How do I know you’re not just toughing it out?”

She was genuinely worried—if Wen Yang ended up in the hospital or had to stay in the dorms to recover, she’d lose the protagonist’s protective aura whenever she went to class or out. Who knew what kind of perverts she might encounter? She couldn’t wear Wen Yang’s clothes all the time when she went out, could she?

“...”

Wen Yang, having no other choice, closed his eyes and continued to enjoy the softness of Ning Chu’s body.

Only his twisted ankle still hurt, but his mind was gradually filled with inappropriate thoughts about Ning Chu.

This made him even more embarrassed, and he couldn’t bear to look at her.

“We’re here.”

Seeing the infirmary door, Ning Chu finally breathed a sigh of relief.

“Yeah.”

Inside the infirmary, they were met by the same doctor they had seen before.

“You two again? It hasn’t even been two months since the semester started, and you’re already regulars here.”

With just one glance, the doctor recognized them—a tall, handsome guy and a short, cute girl. They had been coming to the infirmary together since the first day of military training.

He got up, put on his white coat, and asked, “What happened this time?”

Ning Chu settled Wen Yang into a chair and hurried to the doctor’s desk. “He fell during the sports meet! Please take a look, I hope it’s nothing serious.”

The doctor glanced at Ning Chu’s anxious expression and walked over to Wen Yang, teasing with a smile, “Your little girlfriend seems more worried than you.”

“...”

“Let me take a look...” The doctor began examining Wen Yang’s injuries while asking, “How long have you two been together? You seem to get along well.”

Wen Yang, worried that Ning Chu might get angry, tried to explain, “We’re not...”

“You two are always together. It’s nice.”

His explanation was cut off, and he could only steal a glance at Ning Chu, who was peeking over the doctor’s shoulder, her eyes full of urgency, too preoccupied to care about the doctor’s comments.

“Your ankle is pretty badly sprained, but the rest are just minor scrapes. A little medicine will do.”

Ning Chu quickly followed the doctor. “Is it serious?”

“Not at all. Just clean the wounds and then rest for a while,” the doctor said as he walked to the medicine cabinet, grabbing a bottle of antiseptic and a bandage before handing them to her. “Just a scrape. You can help him apply the medicine later.”

“Got it.”

The doctor took out an ice pack, lifted Wen Yang’s foot, and massaged the sprained ankle while instructing Ning Chu, “You’ll need to help him hold the ice pack in place and massage the ankle a bit.”

“Okay.”

Ning Chu nodded rapidly, feeling a bit more at ease seeing how confident the doctor was.

It wasn’t until then that she suddenly realized the doctor had mistaken her and Wen Yang for a couple.

Between Yan Xinya, Lily, and now the doctor’s misunderstanding, she didn’t feel too strongly about it, though a slight blush of embarrassment did color her cheeks.

“Alright, take him to the rest area. Call me if there’s any issue.”

Ning Chu didn’t have time to explain her relationship with Wen Yang. She quickly stepped forward and carefully helped him into the small resting room.

It was the same small room with only one bed. As she entered, she closed the door behind them.

Wen Yang sat on the edge of the bed, while Ning Chu pulled up a small stool to sit beside him, handing him the antiseptic and ice pack. “Here’s your medicine.”

“Shouldn’t I do it myself?”

“Who else? You expect me to take care of you?”

As his roommate and friend, helping him to the infirmary was already a big favor. Did he really expect her to apply the medicine and massage his ankle like the doctor suggested?

Wen Yang suddenly frowned, “Ow~ My foot really hurts.”

Ning Chu instinctively reached out, grabbing his foot and pressing the ice pack to his ankle, nervously asking, “Is it that bad? Should I call the doctor?”

“It’s better with the ice pack.”

She rolled her eyes at Wen Yang, then propped his foot on her thigh. “You’re such a faker. Who did you learn this from? Acting like a scoundrel.”

“Zhang Shaoqing?”

“Knew it!”

Wen Yang had been a shy, quiet boy when the semester started, but look at him now!

“That guy’s a smooth-talking rascal. Stay away from him.”

Ning Chu was a bit worried that Wen Yang might turn into the shameless playboy from the book who flirted with any girl he came across.

“Alright.”

But for now, it seemed Wen Yang was still willing to listen to her.

As she gently massaged his ankle, she sighed softly, “You scared me to death. Be more careful next time, okay?”

“Mm...”

Wen Yang felt the softness of her small hands, his face turning red as he stared up at the ceiling.

Ning Chu suddenly noticed that his voice had become shy and weak, so she looked up from his ankle, following her gaze upward until it landed on his loose shorts.

Oh no.

Jeez, even after being injured, he’s still thinking about that?

Wen Yang’s face quickly turned pale.

“Ow! Ow! That hurts! Be gentle!”
