Chapter 07: No Choice But to Get Married

Due to the new advisor's delay, today's class ended about ten minutes later than usual.

Wen Yang was called by the advisor for a chat, and by the time the two returned to the dorm after lunch, it was nearly one o'clock.

As usual, Wen Yang pushed open the door, only to find himself blocked at the entrance.

“Zhang Shaoqing and the others aren’t back yet?”

“Probably out messing around with Wang Jie again...” Ning Chu grumbled from behind him, “One day, Wang Jie is going to get into trouble because of him.”

Wen Yang secretly envied Wang Jie’s treatment but didn’t dare say so in front of Ning Chu.

He took out the key from his pocket, unlocked the door, and stepped inside. Instantly, Black Bean meowed and rushed over, weaving around his legs.

Although Ning Chu usually took care of the little black cat, for some reason, Black Bean preferred to play with Wen Yang.

Just as Wen Yang was about to squat down and pet the little cat's head, Ning Chu scooped Black Bean up in her arms.

“I feed you, give you water, and even clean up after you! You ungrateful little thing, you’ve never been this enthusiastic with me!”

Ning Chu scolded Black Bean, feeling a bit of a crisis stirring within her.

What if Black Bean turned into a cat girl one day and decided to repay Wen Yang instead?

She had been planning to "marry off" Black Bean to Zhang Shaoqing. That guy was rich; he wouldn't treat Black Bean badly.

“You should be nicer to Zhang Shaoqing. How else will he be willing to buy you more cat food?”

Black Bean, not understanding a word, struggled free from Ning Chu’s arms and darted into a corner of the dorm, disappearing from sight.

“Stupid cat.”

Ning Chu muttered, her thoughts wavering between getting Black Bean spayed and marrying her off to Zhang Shaoqing.

The former would prevent any future troubles and give her a chance to test what kind of punishment might follow if she disrupted the plot. The latter would be a good match for Black Bean and also provide Zhang Shaoqing with a wife.

Without thinking too much more about it, she went to the sink, washed her face, and yawned as she climbed into bed.

“Taking a nap?”

“Yeah, wake me up at 1:50.” She sat up on the bed, her feet dangling in the air, her face showing clear signs of exhaustion. “I can still sleep for an hour... Just be quiet and don’t disturb me.”

“Alright, alright.”

Wen Yang watched as Ning Chu lazily stretched and nestled into the bed, his thoughts beginning to drift.

With Zhang Shaoqing and Wang Jie off somewhere, Ning Chu looked like she’d fall asleep the moment she closed her eyes.

It had been two months since he last indulged in his “hobby”...

It wasn’t that he was particularly perverted, but a healthy, young man in his prime had certain needs. Constantly washing underwear and having inappropriate dreams was frustrating enough, not to mention how easily he could get excited with a beautiful girl always by his side, even unintentionally tempting him.

Wen Yang tried to justify it in his mind, though he felt guilty. Sitting in front of his computer, he began searching for "material," his eyes occasionally drifting towards Ning Chu’s bed.

If she caught him, his image in her eyes would be ruined.

“Damn it, not working...”

He muttered quietly, flipping quickly through movie scripts and novels, but whether it was from nerves or guilt, the usual reaction wasn’t happening.

Could he have become... less responsive?

Frowning, Wen Yang buried himself deeper in his search.

Meanwhile, Ning Chu lay half-asleep on her bed. She had been tired enough to fall into a light sleep almost immediately, but the persistent clicking of Wen Yang’s mouse kept pulling her back to wakefulness.

With her eyes closed, she wanted to tell Wen Yang to keep it down but worried that speaking up would chase her sleep away entirely.

Annoying~

She’d already told him to be quiet!

After about ten minutes, Ning Chu opened her eyes, the sleepiness long gone. Annoyed, she peeked over the edge of the bed and saw Wen Yang sitting intently at the computer, leaning forward. She had no idea what he was doing that could cause so much noise.

Quietly, she climbed down from the bed, slipped on her slippers, and stormed over to Wen Yang's side. He still hadn’t noticed her presence.

Wen Yang suddenly caught a whiff of a faint, feminine fragrance. Paired with the script on the screen, he finally felt something stir within him.

His eyes lit up, thinking he’d found the right content, and hurried to download it onto his phone.

“What are you doing?”

The sudden voice behind him made his body stiffen. A small head leaned over his shoulder, and she exclaimed, “Wow~”

“...”

Ning Chu smiled mischievously at the obviously embarrassed and stiff Wen Yang, teasing, “What site is that? Share it with me! The artwork in this manga is pretty good~”

Wen Yang had already lost all interest, stammering as he tried to explain, “I-I’m just browsing...”

“Go ahead, I’m not stopping you.”

At least this was better than him flirting with women outside.

“Aren’t you supposed to be sleeping?”

“You and your noisy mouse clicks woke me up.” Ning Chu snapped at him, clearly annoyed.

“Uh...”

Wen Yang quickly closed the webpage, feeling extremely guilty and unable to meet Ning Chu’s eyes. “I won’t look anymore, I promise. You go back to sleep.”

“I’m already wide awake thanks to you!”

Ning Chu rolled her eyes at him, then lifelessly dragged herself to the balcony. “I’m going to wash my face. Let’s play some games afterward.”

“Games...?”

“The co-op game we were playing before.”

Wen Yang perked up at the mention of not having to sit through another awkward situation. He quickly started up the game and fetched a controller from Zhang Shaoqing’s drawer.

In no time, Ning Chu finished washing her face and brought a chair to sit beside Wen Yang.

She propped one foot on the chair, leaning against the bunk bed ladder beside her, and grabbed the controller, ready to dive into the game.

“Come on! Cooperate with me! Are you stupid or what?”

“Aren’t you the one who was too slow?”

“Are we playing or not?!”

“This isn’t my fault! You’re the one who didn’t sync up with me.”

“Damn it! You’re sabotaging me!”

When Zhang Shaoqing and Wang Jie returned with bags full of stuff, they were greeted by the sight of Ning Chu and Wen Yang bickering loudly.

They pushed open the door to the rare scene of Ning Chu and Wen Yang arguing.

These two usually got along so well—what could have made them so mad over a game?

“What are you playing that’s got you so worked up? Are you two breaking up?”

Ning Chu turned around, still fuming, “This jerk deliberately pushed me off the platform!”

“Weren’t you the one who pushed me first?”

“I didn’t mean to!”

After a few more exchanges with Wen Yang, she finally set down the controller, her mood calming. “Where did you guys go?”

“We drove to the pet hospital to buy some stuff for Black Bean,” Zhang Shaoqing explained. “A litter box, cat litter, canned food, cat snacks, a fence...”

Ning Chu was stunned for a moment. “You’re giving Black Bean a dowry?”

“A dowry?” Zhang Shaoqing squatted down to assemble the litter box. “The cat you picked up—you’ve hardly taken care of her.”

Ning Chu had always been pretty casual about taking care of Black Bean, using a water basin as a litter box, disposable bowls for food, no storage container for the cat food, and an old piece of clothing as a bed. Zhang Shaoqing had just provided everything Black Bean was missing.

“Don’t just stand there—help set up the cat fence by the front and back doors.”

“With all this, Black Bean has no choice but to marry you~”
