Chapter 248: Chapter Two Hundred And Forty Seven
The bright morning sun shone hotly over the busy military camp.
Damon sat comfortably behind his desk in his tent. A stack of paper reports rested on the table in front of him, but he was not reading a single word.
He was staring blankly at the canvas wall.
A very wide amused grin was spread across his face. He could not stop smiling. His mind was trapped in the memory of what had happened just a few hours ago in his bedroom.
He remembered the soft, warm weight of Camilla’s body pressing against his side in the dark. He remembered her fingers moving slowly down his stomach. He remembered the exact, intense, burning heat when she had sleepily wrapped her hand firmly around him.
But most of all, he remembered her face when she finally woke up.
"She looked terrified," Damon thought to himself, his internal voice chuckling softly. His dark brown eyes sparkled with amusement. "Her face turned so pale, and then so incredibly red. She scrambled backward on the bed like a frightened crab. She babbled a dozen silly excuses and ran out of the room like the floor was on fire."
He gently tapped his fingers against the desk. The intense physical agony he had felt at that moment was gone now. All that remained was the deeply funny memory of her panic.
"She is always so calm and sarcastic," Damon mused silently, shaking his head. "But today, she was completely speechless. It was wonderful."
While Damon was smiling widely to himself, the canvas flap of the tent suddenly pushed open.
Kade walked into the command tent. He was carrying a small map in his hand.
Kade stepped forward. Then, he froze in his tracks.
Kade stared at the General. He blinked his eyes rapidly. He rubbed his eyes with his free hand, thinking he was seeing a strange illusion.
The great Tyrant General, the man who was known for his cold, angry, stone-like face, was sitting at his desk grinning like a foolish, love-struck boy. It was a very weird, unusual, and slightly disturbing sight for the military aide.
Kade stood still. He did not know if he should speak or turn around and leave.
Damon suddenly noticed the silence. He turned his head and saw Kade staring at him.
Instantly, Damon’s grin dropped off his face. His facial muscles tightened. He forced his expression to return to his usual, strict mask. He sat up perfectly straight in his chair.
Damon cleared his throat very loudly to hide his deep embarrassment. AHEM. "Have you done what I told you to?" Damon asked out loud. His deep voice was sharp and serious, acting as if he had not just been smiling at the wall.
Kade quickly snapped out of his shock. He put on his serious face and bowed deeply from the waist.
"Yes, General," Kade replied respectfully. "I have informed the guards on duty at the main gates. They have strict orders to allow anyone looking for you to enter the camp without the usual heavy security checks."
Damon nodded his head slowly. He folded his large hands together and rested them on top of the desk.
"Good," Damon replied smoothly. His eyes narrowed slightly with calculating intent. "The fishing line has been casted. We just have to wait for the fish to take the bait and wheel it in."
He looked at Kade, making sure his aide was completely ready for the plan they had set up.
"When I signal you," Damon instructed clearly, his voice dropping into a low, commanding tone, "you know what to do, right?"
Kade stood up straight and nodded his head firmly. "Yes, My Lord. I have everything fully prepared in the back holding tent."
"Then we wait," Damon said, picking up a feather quill to finally pretend to read his reports.
An hour passed slowly in the quiet camp. The sounds of training soldiers echoed outside the canvas walls. Damon read his papers, but his mind was fully alert, waiting for the trap to spring.
Finally, footsteps approached the tent. A young guard pushed the canvas flap open slightly and bowed his head.
"My Lord," the guard announced clearly. "A visitor has arrived for you."
Damon did not look up from his papers. He simply raised his left hand slightly.
He gave Kade a small, silent signal with his fingers.
Kade understood immediately. Kade bowed to the General, turned around, and walked quietly out of the command tent, leaving Damon alone to face the approaching visitor.
A few seconds later, the canvas flap opened wide.
Lady Isabel walked into the command tent.
She was wearing a bright dress covered in delicate white lace. Her blonde hair was pinned up perfectly, and she smelled strongly of sweet, heavy perfume. She carried a medium-sized woven basket over her arm.
Isabel stopped in the middle of the room. She looked at Damon sitting behind his desk. She smiled.
"Why are you here, Lady Isabel?" Damon asked bluntly. His voice was flat and empty of any warmth. He did not ask her to sit down.
Isabel did not let his cold tone ruin her happy mood. She took a slow, confident step closer to the desk. She batted her long eyelashes at him, trying to look incredibly sweet and deeply caring.
"To comfort you," Isabel said softly. Her voice was as sweet as sugary syrup.
Damon stopped writing. He slowly lifted his head and looked at her. He raised a single, dark eyebrow in faked confusion.
"Comfort me from what?" Damon asked smoothly.
Isabel let out a very small, dramatic sigh. She shook her head sadly, acting as if she carried a heavy, tragic burden for him.
"You are here brooding and hiding in the military camp," Isabel spoke gently. She looked at him with fake pity. "And I am absolutely sure she made you angry again. I heard she causes nothing but trouble in your mansion. So, I came all this way just to calm you down."
Isabel thought she was being clever. She firmly believed that Damon now hated Camilla. She believed that Damon was at the camp because he was furious with his wife about the secret meeting.
Damon stared at her. His eyes slowly moved downward. He looked at the woven basket hanging on her arm.
Isabel followed his gaze. She looked down at her basket. Her smile grew even wider.
"Oh, yes," Isabel said happily, acting as if she had just remembered it. "I almost forgot. I brought you something to eat."
She stepped right up to the edge of the desk. She carefully placed the woven basket down onto the clean surface.
"I figured you might not have eaten anything last night because you were so terribly upset," Isabel continued. She leaned forward slightly, trying to look deeply devoted. "I had my cooks prepare your favorite meals. I want to make sure you are healthy and strong, My Lord."
Damon looked at the basket. He did not touch it.
He slowly lifted his eyes back to her face. He decided it was time to pull the fishing line. He needed to make her feel confident so her fall would be much harder.
Damon let out a slow small smile.
"You sure care a lot about me," Damon spoke softly. His deep voice carried a fake tone of warm appreciation. "That’s very thoughtful of you, Isabel."
Isabel froze.
