Chapter 2193: Chapter 2194: The Cousin Is a Capitalist’s Daughter 13
Zhang Yu looked at the crowd still arguing around the Youth Corps Office and yawned, "Should we get a double room?"
Zhang Hui responded with an "Oh, okay, no problem."
"Then let’s book the room first, and after we put our luggage in, we can go eat," Zhang Yu suggested seeing no objections from her. After all, someone had not rested well these past few days.
Oh, eat first? Zhang Hui frowned, "I want to shower first."
"Sister, I want to shower too, but look at the time. If we don’t go soon, the restaurant will close, and if you want to shower, you’ll have to go hungry."
"If you don’t want to go hungry, we should go eat now." Zhang Yu picked up the luggage and went in.
Zhang Hui glanced at the luggage on the ground and felt grateful. If Zhang Yu hadn’t insisted on mailing most of the luggage, she couldn’t imagine how they would carry it.
"Let’s go eat first." Forget it, the shower can wait, but we can’t go hungry.
"Two rooms, we’re intellectual youth." Zhang Yu nodded at the many young intellectuals still arguing outside, then took out her ID and looked at Zhang Hui.
She already said to stay first, yet she didn’t know to take out her documents. Zhang Hui glanced at Zhang Yu and then remembered to fish out her ID, fumbling through her bag quickly.
The original owner would have actively helped find it, but as for now, such trivial matters are not challenging at all, so of course, it’s up to her to handle it.
"We need a double room, not too far from the toilet and the water source." Zhang Yu demanded directly.
"Alright," the staff quickly selected a room, "Eight cents per room."
"Okay." Zhang Yu paid the room fee straight away. By this time, Zhang Hui had already found her ID card. Zhang Yu gestured for her to hand it to the staff, "Four cents each, I’ll pay first, and we’ll settle after dinner."
She would pay for what she owed, but for what she didn’t owe? Sorry, that’s not happening.
Zhang Hui responded with an "Oh, I know."
Soon, the check-in was complete, and Zhang Yu and Zhang Hui carried their luggage to the room. After putting down their luggage, they quickly headed to a nearby restaurant to eat.
At this point, it’s already closing time for state-owned restaurants, so arriving to dine at this hour, the staff’s attitude would definitely be unpleasant.
Having been accustomed to modern-day service personnel with welcoming smiles, the contrast with today’s sullen demeanor, like that of an unwilling stepmother, was unsettling for Zhang Yu. Yet there’s no choice; they’re public servants.
"Hello, big sister, we are newly arrived intellectual youth. I wanted to ask what’s still available," Zhang Yu inquired, not wanting to delay the staff’s time off.
Hearing Zhang Yu address her as "big sister" and asking what was still available instead of ordering, the server’s expression softened considerably.
Zhang Hui, who had previously gone to restaurants with Zhang Gui, knew very well that people there were often grim-faced. Entering close to closing time, the expression would undoubtedly be even worse.
Who knew that just a few words from Zhang Yu could make the server’s expression not so grim? It was truly strange. Zhang Hui really didn’t understand how their usually reserved elder sister turned into a different person once outside.
"There are about thirty dumplings left and leek dumplings," the server conferred with the kitchen and reported on the current stock.
"We’ll take it all," Zhang Yu waved her hand, taking everything.
"Okay." Quickly, the server calculated the bill, and Zhang Yu nimbly paid, "Although I eat a lot, I have to consider you too, so we’ll split it in half, what do you think?"
Zhang Yu discussed with Zhang Hui, who agreed with a nod, "I know."
Though she carried things too, she brought quite a bit, while Zhang Yu helped carry some. Not to mention that after getting off the train, she was still taking care despite feeling unwell.
"Alright." Zhang Yu wouldn’t shortchange herself. Eating well, sleeping well, and resting well builds a strong body to handle what comes next.
In no time, the dumplings and buns were ready, "Wait here, I’ll get them." Since we’re eating more, let’s put in more effort.
Soon, Zhang Yu returned with the food, "Don’t rush; if we don’t finish, we can pack it in our lunchboxes."
Worried that after arriving at the restaurant, they wouldn’t be allowed in due to the late hour, Zhang Yu brought along lunchboxes with the plan to take it back to the inn if necessary.
Zhang Hui, who was eager to eat, remembered they had brought lunchboxes, so she also slowed down her eating.
Zhang Yu put the leftover ten dumplings into the lunchbox, "If we get hungry tonight, we can still eat."
They had gotten off the train close to noon, meaning they missed lunch, but fortunately, Zhang Yu had checked the arrival time beforehand, and they bought two extra buns and eggs that morning, or else they’d be even hungrier.
"I wonder how long it takes to get to the commune tomorrow." Yes, earlier she had thought to inquire but ended up focusing only on eating.
With that thought, she quickly swallowed the food in her mouth and approached the server already chatting, "Big sister, may I ask how far is it from here to the Red Flag Commune?"
The server said, "Oh, it’s a bit far from the county, but the city is closer."
"There are buses from the commune to the city, taking about two hours."
Zhang Yu hadn’t expected that going to the city from the Red Flag Commune would be closer, but it took two hours by bus, which made it hard to know what to say. The good news was there were buses to the city; the bad news was the travel time wasn’t short, but it was better than going to the county.
"How long does it take from the commune to the county?" Since she was asking, she wanted to get a complete picture.
"There are no buses from the commune to the county; taking an ox cart would take about four hours."
Taking an ox cart for four hours, it was truly better to head to the city. At least things are more abundant, but it indicates one problem, the Red Flag Commune is in the middle between the city and the county, quite distant from both.
But the good news is there are buses to the city, the only good news, it seems.
Zhang Yu returned to her seat, sharing the news she’d gathered, and Zhang Hui was surprised at how remote their destination was, exclaiming, "So remote!"
Zhang Yu had the same thought; it wasn’t just ordinarily remote. She couldn’t help but wonder if this place had been deliberately chosen for her, otherwise, how did they find such a place?
Having participated in many assignments, Zhang Yu never believed in such great luck; there wasn’t so much of it in the world; only schemes existed.
"Indeed, it’s quite remote." Zhang Yu couldn’t help but feel heavy-hearted. The more remote the place, the more lawless it was. She didn’t know the situation there, but in her previous life, the original owner never got out from there. Was it really that she couldn’t?
Or was there someone who didn’t want her to leave? The original owner’s memories had nothing on this matter, but Zhang Yu felt it posed a question.
The good news was, as seen from the original owner’s memories, before the original incident, villagers kept a certain distance from the intellectual youth. While the village head and village chief leaned slightly towards villagers, they weren’t too biased.
This was because, it seemed, something happened to a female youth from another commune. Her family had stormed in to report the matter to the city’s Youth Corps Office, changing the climate. Even if they bullied the intellectual youth, they’d fear blowing things out of proportion, so they dared not overdo it.
That’s good; Zhang Yu knew that as long as nothing major happened at the last moment, she could avoid her previous life’s fate.
