Chapter 2154: Chapter 2155: The First Wife Forced Out With Nothing Left 74

Zhang Yu couldn’t care less what Lin Yu was thinking as she watched Xiao Xuan go check in their luggage. After all, it was some of their ski gear, and they had to bring it every time.

Lin Yu watched Lin Zixuan go handle the check-in procedures, then looked at Zhang Yu, who was leisurely sipping coffee at the side. "You’re making our son check in the luggage."

Zhang Yu grunted, "Yeah. He’s a young man after all. If I don’t let him do this kind of physical work, am I supposed to do it?"

"Boys should be trained a bit. Otherwise they’ll have no sense of responsibility."

"The kid’s grown up anyway. Once he goes abroad to study, I can’t be hovering over him all the time." Whether it was a boy or a girl, you couldn’t keep a death grip on them; that would only raise a child who relies on their parents for everything.

"Going abroad?" Lin Yu was a little surprised, then thought about it and found it not so strange. "I still remember when Xiao Xuan was born, we even talked about what major he should study."

Thinking back, they’d still been in their honeymoon phase then; their relationship had been really good. But now the child was grown, and they had already split up.

"I’m not getting involved in that. The kid has his own ideas. Whatever major he wants to study is fine by me; I’ll support him anyway." Zhang Yu couldn’t be bothered to discuss Xiao Xuan’s choice of major with Lin Yu.

What? These days, Lin Yu had been thinking that since Xiao Xuan was strong in math, and his maternal grandparents and both of them as a couple had all been working in the financial sector, of course he’d hope for Xiao Xuan to study finance. That way, the Zhang Family’s two generations of connections in the financial world would all end up in Xiao Xuan’s hands.

Lin Yu had already been fantasizing that once Xiao Xuan made a name for himself in finance, he as the father could ride on his son’s coattails and make a comeback.

Everyone already knew he was the type to live off a woman anyway; he didn’t believe that if he staged a comeback by relying on his son, people would still keep nitpicking and whining.

He’d even thought it through: if he really couldn’t remarry Zhang Yu, he’d have to pin his hopes on their son. But the problem now was, it felt like Zhang Yu didn’t really want Xiao Xuan to go into finance, and that inevitably made him panic.

"Don’t tell me you never even considered letting Xiao Xuan study finance." Lin Yu said coldly.

"That question isn’t mine to consider." Zhang Yu watched Lin Yu jumping around like this. "Don’t tell me you’re thinking that if Xiao Xuan majors in finance and later makes a splash in the financial world, you as his dad can also rely on your son."

That—Lin Yu hadn’t expected his words, said in a bit of a rush, to let Zhang Yu guess what he was thinking. It was inevitably awkward. "As if I would."

No matter what, he had to object, of course. "After all, your major has a lot to do with your future job. Our dad..." Under Zhang Yu’s gaze, Lin Yu had no choice but to correct himself. "Your uncle and aunt, and you too, are all in the financial sector. Those connections shouldn’t be wasted, right?"

"Look at how many people working in finance now all hope their kids can get into the same circle, just so their network of contacts can be passed down."

"Honestly, it’s not just finance. Other fields are the same." Lin Yu sighed helplessly. "I know whatever I say now, you’ll interpret it in the worst possible way."

"And aren’t I right?"

"With someone like you, there’s really no way to think too well of you. If I think too well of you, chances are I’ll be the one who ends up screwed."

Zhang Yu looked at Lin Yu with a very professional smile. "I have taken a loss because of you more than once, after all."

"Getting burned once or twice is enough. I can’t keep taking losses." Zhang Yu said coolly.

She happened to see Lin Zixuan had finished checking in the luggage. "Right, didn’t you just have Xiao Xuan handle your check-in too? As his father, maybe you should show a bit of something."

"And as his old man, you haven’t exactly treated your son to many meals either." Zhang Yu continued.

Normally, a son helping his father with check-in procedures was only natural, but when someone’s way of talking was this irritating, Zhang Yu couldn’t help tossing out a line.

Lin Zixuan had been about to say it wasn’t necessary, but when he saw the look Zhang Yu shot him, he fell silent.

Since Zhang Yu had said that, what could Lin Yu do but agree. "Son, what do you want to eat? It’s on me."

Since he was already treating his son, he added Zhang Yu as well. "I’ll treat you too."

Zhang Yu shook the coffee in her hand. "No need. I already had a steak. I’ll pass."

A little after four in the afternoon, she had eaten a steak and was just waiting to have another meal after boarding.

"Right, didn’t you book business class? You can go to the lounge." Lin Yu suddenly remembered that if they went to the lounge at this hour, they could get free food and drinks.

"Once we get to Dubai, I’ll treat you to a meal." Forget it, save where you can and spend where you should; better to treat them over there.

Zhang Yu didn’t care either way. She looked at Lin Zixuan, who thought for a moment, then decided, "Let’s just eat something here at the airport. Food over there is expensive."

Even though it was a desert country, it was rich, with cuisines from all over the world. Every time they went over, Zhang Yu never shortchanged herself, sticking to a principle of eat when you should and spend when you should, never being frugal.

Lin Zixuan didn’t say exactly how much they spent on food there; he just mentioned the names of the restaurants they often went to. Lin Yu couldn’t say he knew them all, but he recognized a few, and they were undeniably expensive.

He’d known Zhang Yu had done well after leaving him, but he hadn’t expected her to be doing this well. His mood inevitably soured, and his voice took on a bitter edge. "You’re doing pretty well now."

Zhang Yu hummed. "Yeah. All thanks to you, for letting me realize that a man’s words aren’t worth believing at all."

"And instead of hoping a man will give you a good life, you’re better off counting on yourself." Zhang Yu had Lin Yu take Lin Zixuan to get something to eat, while she followed slowly behind.

She just treated it as a pre-meal walk. Otherwise, once she got on the plane, she’d be stuck in one spot for hours, and her body would stiffen up.

Lin Zixuan ordered a steak, mostly because it wasn’t too expensive, and he liked it.

Zhang Yu ordered herself a soda water and opened her laptop to work, taking calls from time to time.

Lin Yu watched Zhang Yu being contacted every now and then, while from the moment he’d run into Zhang Yu and their son up to now, he hadn’t received a single real call. Not that literally no one called—there’d been a few, but they were all sales pitches, not one work-related call.

After Zhang Yu set down her phone again, she happened to catch the envy in Lin Yu’s eyes, but she acted as if she hadn’t seen it and continued working through her documents.

As for Lin Yu’s career prospects, Zhang Yu genuinely didn’t think much of them. For someone in finance, maybe not being contacted constantly, but at this time of day, going a whole hour without a single work call coming in—that meant his position was in danger.

"Have you thought about changing jobs?" Zhang Yu hit send on an email and took another sip of water.

Lin Yu had been wanting to ask about work, but Zhang Yu had shut that door on him earlier, so he’d had no way to bring it up. He hadn’t expected this little surprise.

Cutting his steak, Lin Zixuan looked up in surprise when he heard this, failing to understand why she’d suddenly say that when everything seemed fine.
