Chapter 199: Chapter 196: The Misty Lands
Unlike before, as they charted deeper into the wastelands, the beasts seemed to disregard their caution and attacked everything in sight.
Although he had expected this change, Ulric couldn’t help but feel a little surprised. The change just seemed a little too sudden. Did the monsters not want their lives anymore? With a single glance, he could see through the ranks of all charging beasts.
Most were at peak E-rank with a few at D-rank. With the aura he and the Procan Python were unleashing, he had expected them to be at least a little wary. Even if they decided to charge at them. Or were they hoping to overpower them with numbers?
He had assumed that the stronger beasts became, the more sentience they developed. When one achieved a certain rank, not even the power of numbers could hope to stand against them. He had expected the beasts to know this little since the weight of his aura was not any less crushing than that of a refined C-rank being.
Ulric mused as he looked at it from different perspectives. But no matter the case, it just didn’t make any sense. Before he suddenly paused as he sensed something.
Stroking his chin, Ulric muttered with a distant look in his eyes as a thoughtful expression settled on his face.
"I see," Ulric breathed.
He had already noticed that the beasts all had blood-red eyes. At first he had assumed that was some kind of environmental adaptation. But as they got closer, the heavy killing intent exuding out of them was undeniable.
From what he had deduced, Ulric was almost certain that the beasts here had sunk into an endless cycle of violence and killing. The killing intent they had gradually accumulated overwhelmed them, reducing them into mindless beasts with only one sole purpose: killing.
"Should we kill them?" An eager voice suddenly echoed beside him. Tilting his head slightly, a faint smile spread across Ulric’s face as his gaze fell on Lyra.
Unable to keep to herself, she had joined him atop the carriage as she repeatedly brandished her twin blades, waiting for a moment where she could use her blades against a live opponent.
And now that an opportunity had presented itself, she almost couldn’t restrain herself as her grip over her blades tightened.
A feral grin spreading across her face as she awaited Ulric’s command before she could unleash a bloody carnage.
But as Ulric’s next words echoed into her ears, her expression fell a little.
"No need," Ulric muttered as he waved her off. Although he intended on training them along the journey.
He couldn’t afford to make random stops. That would delay the journey as he had already made a few calculations. By passing through the five danger zones, they would arrive at the great city with a day or two to spare.
Besides, the Procan Python could easily take care of these threats. As if to prove it, Ulric tapped into their connection, before issuing a command to it.
Lyra seemed a little dumbfounded as her mouth opened to question him. Right now the beasts were a little manageable, but if they continued chasing after them. Even if they couldn’t catch up to them, they could probably attract a huge horde of them that would be much harder to fight against.
But the words froze in her throat as she watched the dark scales interlocked across the Procan Python shift slightly. Their edges glowing with a deathly light.
Before suddenly, some of them retracted and shot toward the charging beasts. The scales streaming through the air no different than a set of extremely sharp blades.
A few seconds later, like a rain of death, the scales all struck true, tearing countless holes across the charging beasts’ bodies. Killing them instantly.
Then, seemingly with a mind of their own, shot back and lodged across the rest of the interlocked scales.
All this happening within the span of a few seconds.
Staring blankly, Lyra didn’t know how to feel. Surprised that the Procan Python could use its scales as weapons. Or shocked that all the scales had struck true without the Procan Python even turning slightly. It was just incredible!
She gulped audibly, remembering how docile the Procan Python had seemed to be. She had assumed Ulric had chosen it because it would serve as a perfect mount. She didn’t know its combat abilities were also this... terrifying.
Looking up ahead, she could sense there were beasts lurking there, waiting for a perfect moment to strike.
She couldn’t wait to see the Procan Python deploy its scales once more and shred them into bits.
But as they closed in, the scales showed no sign of flying out once more.
A little confused, Lyra’s eyes narrowed slightly. Did the scales consume a lot of energy as to why the beast was refraining from using them or was there an entirely different reason?
She got her answer soon enough. As soon as they got close enough and the monsters that had been lying in wait sprang forward.
The Procan Python’s maw snapped open, but instead of biting through them.
A mass of dark coagulated liquid shot out, landing on the beasts charging from upfront.
Instantly after the dark liquid shot into them, miserable howls and roars echoed out as the beasts were reduced into mere bones in the matter of a few seconds.
As the liquid corroded through them. None were spared in the brutal onslaught.
"Acid?" Lyra mused, her brows scrunching slightly. It seemed she had truly underestimated the true power of the Procan Python. It also opened her eyes to the massive power difference between them.
As she contemplated all this, the grin on Ulric’s face widened as he praised the Procan Python while trails of darkness suddenly emerged.
Devouring what remained of the corpses as a slew of notifications appeared before him.
[Ding! Your shadow beast: Procan Python has killed a peak E-rank beast: Earth Hound! You have gained... experience points!]
[Ding! Your darkness has devoured a peak E-rank beast! You have gained 47 unallocated attributes!]
[Ding! Your shadow beast: Procan Python has killed a low D-rank beast: Rock Tusk! You have gained... experience points!]
[Ding! Your darkness has devoured a low D-rank beast! You have gained 54 unallocated corruption points]
[...]
[Ding! You have leveled up!]
[Unallocated attribute points: 574]
"Hahaha! Amazing," Ulric chuckled inwardly as he stared at his haul.
Maybe it wasn’t that bad having others doing the work while he reaped all the rewards.
He already had a few shadow beasts that were constantly feeding him experience points. Pushing his level to 73. Two levels away before he became a peak D-rank being.
If he had countless shadow beasts actively killing beasts, wouldn’t his level skyrocket with him simply doing nothing?
With that decision, Ulric made a mental note to convert a lot of strong beasts in the wastelands into his shadow beasts to farm experience just for him. While also carving a path just as he had promised.
Smiling at this, Ulric closed his eyes as he sank into a short bout of meditation. This was literally the perfect grounds for him!
Snapping out of her daze, Lyra’s lips slowly parted. A plethora of questions slowly circling in the back of her mind. Did the Procan Python have other skills? If so, were they as amazing as the first two?
But before she had the opportunity to ask any of them, she watched as Ulric’s eyes slowly snapped shut as he slipped into a moment of meditation.
She would ask him later.
Riding in silence, a few hours passed this way.
Within that time, plenty of other monsters tried to launch attacks against them, but despite their ranks, they all met the same fate as the rest. Ulric of course didn’t waste the chance as he devoured their corpses as well. Not willing to let any of them go to waste.
And so, his unallocated attribute points rose drastically. Before finally, his eyes suddenly snapped open as the carriage came to a halt.
"Huh?" Lyra, who had been inspecting her blades, suddenly gasped. She didn’t know why, but she had a feeling as if the blades concealed some secrets... secrets she wanted to uncover. But it was all a hunch.
Raising her head, the surprise on her face deepened. Previously when seated atop the carriage.
The wastelands extended for as far as her eyes could see, but a few hundred meters forward.
Her sight was blocked as a thick mist shrouded the area.
The furrows across her face only deepened as Ulric’s voice echoed.
"We’ve arrived."
At his cue, Amber and the rest, who had been in the carriage, slowly came out while inspecting everything around them.
Their gazes eventually falling on the area shrouded by the heavy mist. They didn’t know why but the area seemed to naturally repel them.
"What is that place?" Amber asked, pointing at the mist. Even with her connection to the earth, she couldn’t sense what lied on the other side.
The rest of the girls averted their gazes to him, their eyes shining with the same bit of curiosity.
Staring at their curious
expressions, Ulric rolled out the map as if confirming something before smiling.
"This is the Misty Lands... the first danger zone."
