Chapter 410: Promotion ( 3 )
Although he was reluctant, Fu Chen’an still knew the priorities. He let his wife go and sighed.
Understanding his mood, Yao Zhi looked around. When she saw that her guards were standing guard in the distance, she tiptoed and kissed him.
"I’m someone from the Lei family now. So, we still have to keep our distance from others. When we go inside the manor, I will let you hug me as much as you want," she coaxed softly.
Hearing this, Fu Chen’an’s eyes lit up instantly. He nodded and said, "You can’t go back on your word."
"I promise, I won’t go back on my word," Yao Zhi chuckled.
Fu Chen’an leaned down and kissed her for a few minutes before saying, "I’m going back to the camp. I will wait for you in the manor."
Yao Zhi nodded. "I’m almost done here. I will go in an hour."
"Mhmm."
After they reached an agreement, Fu Chen’an finally rode his horse back to the military camp outside the city. As for Yao Zhi, she returned to her task.
She followed the map shown by the system after scanning the area and marked the places where they could dig wells.
She found several underground lakes outside the Northeast City, so they could dig 4 to 5 wells in the outskirts. But inside the city, there were only 3 places suitable for digging wells because there was only a small underground river.
Even though the underground river was small, the flow was quite strong. The amount of water should be more than enough for the people’s daily use.
Half an hour later, Yao Zhi had already returned to the General’s temporary residence. Since the intact buildings in the city were mostly used to house sick and injured people, she couldn’t stay there.
When the soldiers saw them return, they quickly opened the gate and let them in.
The servants had received orders from Xue Ya’er to lead Yao Zhi and her guards to their rooms when they returned. So, they saved themselves the trouble of greeting her again.
In less than 20 minutes, Yao Zhi was already led by the servant to the guest room. While it was called a guest room, this was actually a small courtyard with 1 main building and 2 side wings.
She stayed in the main building while her guards stayed in the side wings. It made it easier for them to protect her in case of an emergency.
The main building was not large, but it had a hall to receive guests, a living room where she could dine, a bedroom with complete furniture, and a room for her to take a bath.
Yao Zhi was satisfied with the room and turned to the servant. "I don’t need anyone to serve me. You can leave now."
The maidservant thought that if she served this Young Master well, she might be able to become his Tongfang. Unexpectedly, she was chased away before she could say a word.
Feeling dejected, she could only curtsy and nod. "Understood."
When she was alone, Yao Zhi closed the door and locked it. Afterward, she entered the shared manor. The moment she appeared, she saw her husband had already taken a shower and was waiting for her in the living room.
The moment he saw her, Fu Chen’an stood up and said, "Wife, I already prepared water for you. You can take a bath first, then we can have a meal together."
While it was too early for dinner, Yao Zhi was indeed hungry. So, she nodded and went to take a shower.
Half an hour later, she came to the dining room wearing fluffy pajamas. Both of them took seats side by side, and she told him what she had been doing after arriving in the Northeast City.
When she finished speaking, she asked, "Husband, what about your situation?"
Fu Chen’an swallowed the food and replied, "The General plans to promote me to the Battalion Commander position because of my merits. But the imperial envoy rejected it."
"The envoy said that I had just been promoted not long ago. If I were promoted by two major ranks directly, it would be against the rules."
The moment Yao Zhi heard this, she frowned. "I heard from Madam that this imperial envoy was the one who delivered the Imperial Edict and told the General to find a way to get provisions and weapons by himself."
"Husband, what is this person’s background? What gives him the courage to act so arrogantly in other people’s territory?"
Fu Chen’an thought for a moment before replying, "This envoy is the eldest grandson of the Prime Minister. He currently holds the position of Assistant to the Vice Minister of War. He is also the current Emperor’s study companion."
"Even though his rank is not high, with his family background and his relationship with the current Emperor, it’s understandable for him to be so arrogant. He doesn’t even give the noble families any face, let alone the General."
"But the General holds military power," Yao Zhi said doubtfully.
Fu Chen’an nodded. "The General holds military power, but he is an orphan."
"Even though he was adopted by the Duke Zhenguo’s family, his name was registered under a distant relative’s name. No matter what, Duke Zhenguo’s glory has nothing to do with him."
Hearing this, Yao Zhi was confused.
According to the novel shown to her by the system, Lu Qianxuan was the heir of Marquis Wenyuan. The current Duke Zhenguo was Marquis Wenyuan’s maternal cousin. So, the General was Duke Zhenguo’s nephew.
With this relationship, there was no need for them to register the General’s name under a distant relative.
As someone with a simple mind, she couldn’t fathom the scheming minds of these people. Since she couldn’t understand them, she decided not to think about them anymore.
Let the main characters do what they need to do. As a small character, she only needed to protect her husband and live well. After reaching this conclusion, she stopped talking about the matter.
