Chapter 290: What Lenard meant.
Five days after Gael’s engagement ceremony, the Rocland’s and Veythar’s gathered at the sea side courtyard. The compound was sealed by royal soldiers. In their black uniforms, with high tech weapons and gadgets, they stood at every gate and corner, their eyes sharp, their ears sharper. The investigation Sienna had known was coming had begun.
It had taken them by surprise, because there had been no warning before they were forced to gather and surrounded. Lenard was leading the team. Sienna finally understood what the lion beast man had meant when he said he hoped her cleverness would be ready for what was coming.
This was no ordinary questioning. They had brought lie detectors and other gadgets. Every word was weighed, every pause measured. A single dangerous lie could mean death. The king was not taking chances by replacing a bad Prime Envoy with one who was the same or worse.
Her uncle’s informal appointment had triggered scrutiny of the entire family. And because Jorik’s brother-in-law Paris had once been a rebel, suspicion hung over them like a storm cloud.
For some reason, aunt Numia was the first to be questioned. She wept into the tent Lenard’s people had set up, with her son trailing behind. She was the last relative to arrive in the temporary investigation center, but she had her chin high, eyes gleaming with ambition and excitement.
The rest of the family, sitting in chairs arranged to the sides rolled their eyes or shook their heads. They all predicted that this would be a disaster. Uncle Jorik, who actually wanted the job, had his hands together, in what looked like a prayer.
Lenard sent her to the agent in the middle, a masked woman whose identity was kept hidden.
"Sit down." The agent gestured to the empty chair across from her. Two other agents walked over and attached wires to Numia’s wrist, a device to her head and new boots on her feet.
"What do the boots do?" Soren whispered to Sienna.
Sienna shrugged. "Maybe they can tell when you want to run away."
The agent cleared her throat and Lenard ordered for silence. It was given as he desired.
The agent asked Numia for her name and age, followed by basic questions before the tricky ones started. "What are your ambitions, Mrs. Numia Rocland?"
Numia smiled sweetly, but her words dripped with arrogance. "My dream is simple. My son will marry into the royal family or a noble house that is better than the Veythar’s. We will live in endless power and wealth. And when we have power, I will suppress all those who looked down on us. I will go back home and laugh in my parent’s faces. I will crush all those who mocked us when we were kicked out of the tribe with nothing and I will take my shops back. Anyone who gets in my way will be destroyed. Because I have the power."
The already silent tent somehow became even more silent. Even the agents shifted uncomfortably.
Sienna, watching from the corner seat, nearly fainted. Did she just admit to tyranny in front of Lenard?
The agent’s eyes narrowed. "You would destroy and suppress others...because you can?"
Numia nodded proudly, as if she had just declared her son the next emperor. "Others do it, so why can’t I? Just look at how some of the royals act towards us commoners? I want my son to be as powerful as possible. If the King liked men, my Coco would have been the perfect queen. If not queen, then concubine. If not concubine, we would settle for secret mistress. The queen has failed to have an heir for the king, maybe their relationship is for publicity. Whenever I see her, I drop hints about my son being a wonderful helper but that silly woman doesn’t get my meaning!"
Somehow, every eye turned to Corven Junior. And the boy--he fainted!
Sienna buried her face in her hands. We are doomed.
Lenard grinned in Sienna’s direction.
The other relatives were groaning and others appeared pale. The number of those who wanted to go over and slap Numia was dangerously high.
Thankfully, the other relatives were more sensible.
Suri answered timidly when asked about her ambitions. "I just want to live with mama Miller forever."
The agents nodded, noting her innocence.
Mira just wanted to fly as a falcon to find her daddy in the sky.
Grandpa Corven spoke with calm logic. "I seek stability. I wish to make the world safer for Sienna, because she is just human and humans are vulnerable. I have no desire for rebellion or power, only to keep this family safe and together."
Uncle Daren added, "We only want survival. Shelter, food, and peace. We wish to serve the fox tribe who accepted us, to earn our keep. Nothing more."
Aunt Linera answered, "I wish I to slap Lady Cadelaria some day for humiliating my niece. It is my life’s biggest ambition and someday, I will fulfill it."
Everyone looked at Lady Cadelaria who was already heaving and pointing to Linera, with an ugly scowl on her face.
"I also wish to slap Mrs. Miller." Linera continued, despite the gasps that followed.
Mrs. Miller’s eyes had widened and she was pointing to herself, asking if her name had been said, truly. She had a good relationship with Linera, so why would the woman want to slap her?
"Why?" Lenard pitched in, interrupting the agent. The smile on the face of the lion beast man was sly. The queen had come from the king, who was whispering in his ear.
Linera replied like a robot on remote control. "Miller knew Paris was a falcon beast man. It is no secret that beast tribes love their offspring and care for their orphans. Even if Paris abandoned her, she could have reported to the falcon tribe and sought help. A simple one minute blood test would have traced the children back to us.
Sienna and Soren would have been raised right with our protection and financial contributions. Instead, they lived in poverty, received subpar education and faced humiliation daily. They were fed left overs and wore hand me down clothes and shoes. For all this, I blame her."
Mrs. Miller crossed her arms over her chest, gritting her teeth. She was either hurt or annoyed. But at the moment, nobody had time to dig into it or comfort her, as she was called up next.
Everyone’s answers were funny, measured, practical and mostly safe. Lenard seemed satisfied so far.
Sienna exhaled, grateful that not everyone in her family had Numia’s reckless tongue or Linera’s sharp one.
Finally, it was Sienna’s turn. She walked to the chair and braced herself for the question about her ambition. Instead, the lead agent asked her a different question.
"What do you know about the death of the former falcon lord?"
