Chapter 244: Copy and Paste!
At such a serious time, Sienna didn’t think the falcon relatives would take the identity of the one chosen to lift the lid so seriously. Ten minutes passed and the debate got more heated! Finally, she had to step in, pushing people apart.
"If you are all so eager to lift the lid, why don’t you open it together? That way, if it explodes, at least you will go out as a family."
They froze, as if she had pressed pause.
Elias smirked. "Sienna, your humor stings worse than the hits from your pan."
Mrs. Miller touched Sienna’s arm. "Maybe we should move the box outside and have Elias open it with his mental strength, while everyone stands at a safe distance away. This way, nobody risks being hurt."
Uncle Jorik picked up the box and hurried outside, before a new argument over who should lift it could break out. The rest followed quickly, whispering like excited chicks. Hardly had Jorik set the box down when lion guards swept into the courtyard, accompanying the queen.
Serenya came with a smile, her arms wide as they reached for Sienna. "Si...I missed you."
Sienna’s hands fell to her sides limply. Of all the moments to visit suddenly, why this one? Was she expected to believe that this was just a coincidence? "Serenya, what a surprise." She responded dryly.
"Right?" The queen giggled, eyes darting to the box for a moment. "I wanted to surprise you and I have succeeded."
Sienna snorted. "I am more surprised that you didn’t show up last night."
They both knew what she was referring to, and Serenya laughed. "Si, how could I show up when you were not here? But, I have a package that was accidentally mislabeled and sent to you. I would like to take it back with me after our breakfast and tour of your new offices. I haven’t seen that wall you can’t stop talking about. I should take a few pictures in front of it."
Elias’s eyebrows shot up so fast, they almost detached from his face! "Your package!"
Even Sienna was astounded. Could she have been more obvious that she had come for the wooden box? The queen’s guards were already moving in on it, waving their inspection gadgets. Before they could touch it, Elias’s eyes narrowed. His mental strength outward like a wave, shattering the wooden box into splinters before anyone could blink.
Gasps echoed through the courtyard.
Numia shrieked, "My hair!" as a shard of sharp wood flew over the top of her head, with a chunk of hair held up in a bun.
But not one person focused on her. Their eyes lay on the contents left in the wreckage: three letters, each neatly sealed. Sienna quickly moved in to pick them up. One was addressed to her, another to her brother, and a third to her mother. Beside them were a handful of photographs, grainy snapshots of distant cities, schools, markets and places Paris had been to. The last item was a single stone, smooth and gray, sitting innocently as though it had no idea why it was there.
Sienna’s fingers trembled, though she masked her nervousness with a sarcastic smile. "Great news mother, it’s not socks. And it is not a misplaced package."
The queen laughed. "I will have to have a word with the courier who misinformed me. Meanwhile, a letter from your father! Looks like he was looking to reconnect Si. What does it say?"
Sienna broke the seal and unfolded the paper. Silence fell as she began to read aloud.
"My daughter," she read, voice steady though her heart twisted, "I regret the years I abandoned you. I regret leaving your mother to raise you alone. I regret not being there when you needed me. I regret everything."
She paused, blinking. "Wow. He really leaned into the word regret. If this were a drinking game, we would all be unconscious."
Some people laughed, some coughed.
"That’s it." Sienna lowered the paper. "What does yours say Soren?"
Her brother opened his letter slower than she had done, and read softly, "My son, I regret the years I abandoned you. I regret leaving your mother to raise you alone. I regret not being there when you needed me. I regret everything."
Sienna put her hands on her stomach, bursting into laughter. "Damn, copy and paste! He couldn’t even be original. Wow!" She looked at the queen and sighed, "No treasure map. No secret weapon...just apologies and they are not even touching."
The falcon cousins exchanged disappointed looks. One whispered, "I was hoping for gold."
Linera muttered, "At least he should have left a recipe, a business idea, anything really....an inheritance for the two of you."
Mrs. Miller sighed loudly. She handed her own letter to Sienna. "I don’t care for what he had to say."
Sienna opened it, perusing through it quickly. "Seriously! Again, with the same words." She flung the paper to the ground. "We lost sleep and agonized over the word ’regret’ written twenty times!! Son of a bitch!" She growled.
"Hey..." Grandma Byra called sharply.
Sienna winced. "Not you grandma...I am just using the expression to mean I am not happy. And I am going to bed because lack of sleep makes me a cranky bitch."
The queen stopped her, eyes narrowing at the photographs. "Si, what about the photographs? Don’t you want to see his face? The places he visited, the things he liked."
In response, Sienna snorted. She glanced at the photographs on the ground with no interest at all. "Consider them evidence, but all I see are blurry vacation photos. Maybe you will find something useful in them, but I don’t."
The queen nodded. She gestured to her guards to pack up the photographs.
Elias stepped in, picking up the stone. "This is odd....it deserves examination."
Sienna rolled her eyes. "It’s a stone. Paris probably picked it up as a souvenir from one of his trips. My advise is that you don’t waste your time analyzing it because it will drive you crazy like these useless letters."
Grandpa Corven leaned forward. "Don’t mock stones, child. They were used to record history before paper came into existence. This one could be sacred."
Sienna rolled her eyes. "If it starts glowing, I will apologize."
