Chapter 231: Good child, good child.

Sienna patted Jess on the back, like a caring child, worried about the health of her elder. "Grandma, take it easy. Don’t let this give you health problems. I am sure mother-in-law will learn her lesson from this. Look at me for example, when my falcon relatives came looking for shelter, I didn’t take them in directly. I set up up a payment plan. They rent the cottages where they stay and pay Elias a fee. They all got jobs immediately, they hunt for meat and buy their own food. We live together, but we have boundaries. I would never use Elias’s money to support them."

Jess smiled softly at Sienna. "You are such a good child, with a better understanding of things than your mother-in-law."

Sienna nodded, "I try grandmother, I try."

Cadelaria seethed, but she couldn’t even express her anger. But inside, she was thinking, Chubby charms, how dare you climb up to the Grand lady to oppress me?

"Grandmother," Sienna asked in a soft voice, pounding on the old lady’s back carefully, "How much are we looking at in losses?"

Jess narrowed her eyes at Cadelaria. "I haven’t received a full count because the butlers and accountants are still taking inventory to match everything. I feel sorry for you child, your mother-in-law has not only wronged this estate but she has wronged you. She endangered your position, your children’s inheritance, and the honor of the fox tribe."

"Mother, I didn’t." Cadelaria denied.

Jess tossed the ledger out like a freebie, and it whacked Cadelaria’s forehead. "Do you want me to list all the things you have done wrong? At your age, you can’t even differentiate between right and wrong. You called a meeting of the council of elders to bad mouth your daughter-in-law!"

Sienna nodded, continuing to patting the elder’s back.

Jess’s finger jutted to Cadelaria, "Even if you thought she had some shortcomings and the two of you clashed, you should have kept it behind close doors. In the family. How could you take it to the council? How could you shame our family like that? Do you think they are praising you or gossiping about us with their families?"

Cadelaria’s cries filled the air.

Sienna found it hard to pity her. The woman had been wrong, and that was that.

"And you dragged my good grandson into the mix," Jess growled, "comparing Elias to the king like that! Talking about how two strong beast men cannot tolerate each other. Are you trying to sabotage him? Did the Twindell’s send you here to destroy the Veythar line?"

Sienna said with grace, "Grandma, I talked to the queen about that and she promised to smooth things over with the king."

Jess smile dotingly at Sienna. "Good child, you are a good child indeed. You are much better than some people who only know how to create trouble." She turned to Cadelaria, her face switching in an instant. "In the storm of a plague, instead of taking charge and showing Sienna the ropes, you sabotaged her and when you failed, you claimed her credit. You even gave an interview to the media about how you handled the situation efficiently and successfully. Have you no shame?"

Sienna’s snorted. That was exactly what her mother Mrs. Millers had said when she saw that interview. That Lady Cadelaria had no shame.

"Do you know what Elias said when he called me, desperate for my return?" Jess asked.

Cadelaria’s breath caught. So, her own son had called the Grand lady back to oppress her! Impossible, the idea must have been Sienna’s.

"He said that short of knocking the daylights out of you, he didn’t know what else to do because you were refusing to listen to all reason and out of control." Jess banged her knuckles on the table. "

Sienna kept up with her act, grabbing Jess’s hand, blowing air on the knuckles. "Grandma, careful. Don’t hurt yourself. I am sure mother-in-law understands now just how bad she messed up. She will personally go to her family and bring back all the things she sent them. As for what was sold, she will have to pay it back out of her own pockets. Surely, it is what she is thinking."

Cadelaria clenched her teeth. How she longed to scream at Sienna, to shut her mouth. The brat was not helping, she had come to stir the storm. Did she know how humiliating it would be for her to go and demand for those things back?

Acting in opposite of her thoughts, she nodded, "Yes, mother, I will bring everything back." She cried out loud.

Jess snorted. "You should not have touched them in the first place! No amount of tears is going to save you from my wrath today, not even Sienna’s pleading."

Sienna blinked, "Grandma, do you plan to make mother-in-law kneel for many hours? She is very sensitive, father-in-law’s heart will be broken."

Jess slapped the table. "Let him be angry. Do I care? I will make her kneel all day if I wish. She is not to have lunch today, not one meal should cross her lips. How I wish I could tell the servants to pour cold water over her head to wake her up. She is obviously living in a dream world."

Cadelaria’s pitiful sobs became louder, her wails echoing through the chamber like a badly tuned flute, each note designed to elicit sympathy from Jess. Sienna wondered when the fainting would begin. Wasn’t that the lesson her mother-in-law had taught Ali? Now was the perfect time to pass out to avoid punishment.

But she had a feeling that Jess was already aware of these foolish tactics of her daughter-in-law.

Cadelaria looked at the doors as they opened, her teary eyes filling with hope. But that hope died quickly when an accountant shuffled in, clutching a thick ledger bound in crimson leather. He bowed low, then presented it to Jess.

"Grand Lady," he said gravely, "this record details the royal family’s gifts of tribute foods distributed to the fox lord estate."

Sienna leaned forward eagerly, as if she were a schoolgirl waiting for gossip. All she knew was that if the ledger was here, then Cadelaria had screwed up again. And that, made her smile secretly.
