Chapter 66: A Great Teacher

Teaching people how to use something for the first time was not easy, especially since they did not even know the number system. Still, as the day went on, Maeve found herself enjoying being a teacher more and more.

"Alright, if we want to build a fence that is 150 centimeters tall, how long should this piece of wood be?" Maeve asked, giving them a question they could apply in real life.

To help them learn, she had given each person a wooden plank to measure and cut on their own. The lessons were not easy, and she often had to explain the same thing several times, but everyone worked hard to keep up.

By the end of the day, they had finally understood the basic idea of measurement. It was far from perfect, but it was enough to make Maeve feel confident in their abilities, even Elder Vax’s.

Maeve clapped her hands several times as she looked at the eight wooden planks lined up in front of her and every single one had been cut to the exact same size.

"All of you did an amazing job!" She exclaimed.

The moment she saw the notification, Maeve let out a long sigh of relief because finally her debt was finally gone.

"I think that’s enough for today!" she said cheerfully, looking at each of them in turn.

The more she looked at them, the more proud she felt. They were the first students she had ever taught, and despite how difficult the lessons had been, they had learned much faster than she expected.

Kona was the first to speak. "Miss Maeve, I’m really glad I had the chance to learn this knowledge."

Maeve smiled warmly at him. "I’m glad to have a student like you too, Kona."

Since she was teaching them, she had asked everyone to call her "Miss Maeve" instead of Goddess. Somehow, she liked it much better because it felt more natural. The thought even crossed her mind that she might ask the rest of the tribe to call her that as well.

Tavir and Toren also expressed their gratitude before heading off. However, Elder Vax remained behind and only spoke once they were alone.

"What kind of fence do you want to build, Miss Maeve?" Elder Vax asked. "I can start working on it now."

Maeve glanced up at the sky, which had already grown dark.

At first, she wanted to tell him to wait until tomorrow. But seeing the determined look on his face, she decided against it. Besides, the sooner the fence was finished, the sooner they could move the Clouds into it.

"The Clouds are fairly tall," Maeve muttered as she thought it over. "But since they can’t jump, a fence that’s about one hundred and fifty centimeters high should be enough to keep them inside."

She paused for a moment before adding, "And we don’t have many wooden planks to spare."

After thinking it through, she nodded to herself and turned back to Elder Vax. "I need a fence that’s one hundred and fifty centimeters tall. Can you do that?"

"Of course, Miss Maeve," Elder Vax replied without hesitation. "I can have it finished by tomorrow morning."

Maeve blinked several times in surprise. That sounded far too fast to her.

Then again, Elder Vax possessed far greater stamina than an ordinary human. It was impossible to judge the people of the Azuryn Tribe by human standards.

"I can’t wait to see it," Maeve said with a smile.

After that, Maeve turned her head toward Axan, who had been quietly watching her from a distance the entire time. It seemed that the three brothers had truly worked out a schedule to make sure one of them was always by her side.

Of course, part of it was because they wanted to protect her at all costs. But Maeve was also fairly certain they were trying to be fair to one another.

"You’re a good teacher," Axan said as he walked over to her.

Meanwhile, Elder Vax picked up the wooden planks and carried them toward the area where he planned to build the fence.

Maeve felt a little embarrassed by the compliment that her face turned a bit red. "They’re just really fast learners," she said.

Then she remembered something and quickly asked, "Have you fed the Clouds yet?"

"Cerus is feeding them right now," Axan replied. "Do you want to go see them?"

The moment he finished speaking, Maeve’s eyes lit up. "Yes!" She nodded so quickly that her hair swayed around her shoulders.

After all, she had only seen the Clouds for a short time earlier. There had been too much work to do, and she hadn’t had the chance to properly look at them yet. Now that she finally had some free time, there was no way she was going to miss the opportunity.

When they arrived at the place where the Clouds were tied up, Maeve immediately spotted Cerus standing several steps away, trying to feed them or at least, trying was the right word.

Instead of walking closer, he kept tossing handfuls of grass toward the creatures from a safe distance.

Maeve had to bite back a laugh. "Is he still traumatized from being chased by the Clouds?" she asked. "Should we... stop letting him come near them?"

"It’s impossible for him to avoid the Clouds forever after this, so he should learn to face his fear," Axan replied calmly. "Besides, it was his own fault for being such a troublesome child."

Maeve glanced at Cerus again. He threw another handful of grass and immediately took a step back, as if expecting the Clouds to suddenly charge at him.

Poor Cerus.

After watching for a moment, another question came to her mind. "But didn’t you say that Clouds move very slowly?" she asked. "Then how were they able to chase Cerus back then?"

"There are two different species of Clouds," Axan explained. "The smaller ones with black fur can move very quickly. The white ones are the ones we usually hunt for food."

"What happened to the black ones? Did they go extinct?" Maeve asked, sounding a little sad.

Axan took a deep breath and then nodded. "Yes, they went extinct. Because they were more aggressive than the white ones, they often fought with other wild beasts. Besides that, their birth rate was also declining. In the end, their numbers kept getting smaller until there were none left."

"That’s sad..." Maeve murmured, remembering all the animals that had gone extinct back on Earth.

After all, there was something deeply heartbreaking about watching a species disappear forever. Once they were gone, there was no way to bring them back.

For a moment, she wondered how many black Clouds had once roamed these lands before the last one vanished.

"I hope we can save the species that are still left," Maeve said quietly.

Axan looked at her and gave a small nod. "We’ll do our best."

His answer was simple, but Maeve could hear the sincerity behind it.

After letting the topic rest for a moment, she turned to another matter. "What about the grassland we’re planning to make?" she asked. "Has Ikarus already spoken with the people who specialize in growing plants?"

Axan nodded. "Yes, he has." He added, "We might be able to grow the grass tomorrow once the sun rises."

Maeve’s face immediately brightened. "That’s great!" she said. "If Elder Vax can finish building the fence by tomorrow morning, then we can grow the grass inside the fence."

The more she thought about it, the more excited she became. Everything seemed to be coming together much faster than she had expected.

Maybe it was because of her lucky charm, or maybe it was because the people of the Azuryn Tribe were so easy to guide.

[Maybe it’s a combination of both, Host!] Pinky said cheerfully. [They see you as their savior, so it’s only natural that they don’t want to let you down!]

Maeve didn’t pay much attention to Pinky’s words because Cerus had captured too much of her attention.

At that moment, he was still trying to feed the Clouds while keeping a very safe distance between himself and the fluffy creatures and the sight was so amusing that Maeve could barely hold back her laughter.

She finally turned to Axan and said, "How about we have dinner together tonight? Since all of you are here."

Axan nodded without hesitation. "That would be great. Let me inform them."

With that, he headed toward Cerus. Maeve watched as Axan said something to his brother.

A moment later, Cerus’s face lit up. "Maeve!" he called out excitedly. "Are we really having dinner together tonight?"
