Chapter 279: S-Stay back!

With a smirk, she enlarged her screen so it was visible to everyone, then pointed at Cyra, who was in the middle of talking with Zane.

She was so lost in her imagination of seeing Cyra and Zane groveling in apology to her that she failed to notice her mother freeze at the sight of Cyra, as though the hologram screen itself were glitching.

"Mum, she’s the riffraff who tried to—" Marissa was cut off by her mother’s yell.

"Shut your mouth, you stupid child! I don’t have an unlucky daughter like you! Kneel and beg Madam Cyra to forgive you!" her mother barked through the screen, her eyes wide with unconcealed terror.

She recognized Cyra immediately. Pictures and videos of her massacres had circulated throughout aristocratic circles, and everyone knew that crossing her meant death.

The punishment for doing so was immediate removal from the family tree, followed by being packaged as a gift for Cyra to dispose of as she pleased to calm her anger.

She hadn’t known her daughter would be the first foolish and unlucky person to get into trouble with this woman.

“Madam, please forgive my daughter and take everything she said as the ranting of a lunatic.” Her mother muttered, a hint of fawning and nervousness creeping into her voice.

Marissa stood frozen in shock while everyone was stunned into silence by the sudden reversal.

Cyra ignored the woman, kept selecting dishes that caught Zane’s eye, and then moved on to beverages.

The woman’s forehead beaded with sweat, a hint of struggle flickering in her eyes, yet she clung to a sliver of hope that Cyra might spare her daughter.

Then she realized Marissa was still standing there dumbly instead of kneeling to beg for her life.

“You useless brat, kneel immediately and beg Madam Cyra for forgiveness! Or I won’t be able to save you,” she warned through gritted teeth, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the edge of the table.

Marissa was snapped back to reality by her mother’s yell, and a wave of fear crept into her heart. She had never seen her mother this serious before, nor had she ever heard her voice tremble with such fear because of another person.

But years of being pampered, using her family’s status to bully others, and committing various atrocities clouded her judgment in that moment. Too proud to kneel before anyone, she shook her head at her mother’s words.

She preferred it the other way around, with people kneeling before her, their dignity and pride shattered as they begged for their lives.

“Mom... why do I have to kneel to her? She was the one who took the private room I had my eye on, and now you want me to beg her!” Marissa whined in displeasure, pointing at Cyra.

Marissa’s group of friends sensed that something was wrong and remained silent, while some of the more cautious ones quietly slipped toward the door.

The manager, who had dealt with people from various backgrounds, was the first to sense genuine fear in Marissa’s mother’s voice, and her attitude toward Cyra immediately became more respectful.

She patted herself on the back for making the right choice, or her outcome might have been tragic.

Only the foolish Marissa failed to read the room or think deeply about her mother’s unusual nervousness and fear when speaking to Cyra.

Zane caught sight of her pointed finger from the corner of his eye, and his face went expressionless while his eyes turned glacially cold.

“Pass me by sword,” Zane muttered calmly, and Cyra, who was planning to make a move, paused. An indulgent, elated smile lit her face at Zane’s anger on her behalf.

She leaned in and pecked him on the forehead before taking out a sword from her space and handing it to him.

Marissa’s words froze in her throat as she stared at the sword that materialized out of thin air, in shock and disbelief, feeling that her eyes were playing tricks on her.

She wasn’t the only one surprised; everyone in the room stared at the sword as if it were an alien species.

The woman on the other side of the screen took in the entire scene and knew her daughter would not end well. She closed her eyes in grief; when she opened them again, a ruthless decisiveness gleamed in her gaze.

“Madam, you can do whatever you want with her ... I have no such daughter.” With that, she disconnected the call, unwilling to witness her daughter’s death.

She had severed ties with Marissa, or the main branch would discard her—or worse, kill her and her family to appease Cyra’s anger.

Fortunately, she had other children; she had to warn them not to be as foolish as Marissa.

A clap of thunder echoed in Marissa’s mind, and she stumbled back, staring in disbelief at the transparent holographic screen.

The rest panicked at how easily Marissa was disowned, and they forgot about the sword.

The air grew tense, and the loud thumps of their heartbeats were music to Cyra’s ears, her fangs throbbing as she longed to taste the flavor of fear in their blood.

"Bang!" Two women knelt instantly, discarding their pride as they begged for Cyra’s forgiveness.

"Please, Madam, forgive me. I will leave the room immediately."

"I will foot the entire bill; please forgive me!"

Those who hadn’t grasped the severity of their situation began contacting their parents with trembling fingers, but inwardly their hearts were gripped with dread, fearing they would suffer the same fate as Marissa.

Cyra ignored their pleas, her attention fixed on Zane’s figure, eyes filled with doting as she watched him rise to his feet and stride toward the stunned Marissa.

“Which hand did you use to point at my wife, left or right?” Zane asked coldly, his voice snapping Marissa out of her daze as she instinctively stepped back.

“W-W-What are you trying to do?! My mother was only joking, and she would avenge me if you touched a hair on my body! S-Stay back!” Marissa threatened in a weak, stuttering voice. She tried to sound confident, but only fear leaked through.

She slumped to the ground, her legs growing heavy with overwhelming fear. Her eyes welled with tears, which turned into sniffles as she met Zane’s cold gaze.

At that moment, she realized the terrible situation she was in.

Her mother had truly abandoned her, and she had angered someone powerful enough to frighten her mother.

“I’m sorry... please let me go—Arghhh!” Her words were cut off by a bloodcurdling scream tearing from her lungs.

Her eyes bulged in disbelief as she stared at her severed hands, her scream still echoing through the room.

The pain and the image of her severed hands were so intense that she thrashed on the ground in a futile attempt to ease it, her movements causing blood to spurt out and soak into the soft carpet beneath them.

Zane flicked the excess blood from his sword, sheathed it, and returned to his seat. None of them had seen how he attacked.

He had cleanly severed Marissa’s hands at the wrists, yet no one had seen the moment it happened.

He had warned them to leave earlier, but they had refused to listen; now they were begging to be allowed to go.

“Ahh!” the people in the room let out piercing screams. Some tried to bolt for the door, but Cyra was faster.

She appeared in a flash at the doorway, shoved the manager and guards outside, then closed it and locked it.

"Click!" The sound of the locked door echoed ominously through the room.
