Chapter 482: Chapter 482: Public Outrage
"Filthy whore! Tramp! You’ve brought shame to all our ancestors!"
"Beat her to death!"
"I know this whore! It’s Phoenix Golding from Millstone Peak. That bitch is a master actress, seducing all the men in the village until they’re wrapped around her little finger. She’s better at hooking men than a prostitute!"
"This is terrible! My nephew from my maiden family is supposed to be set up with a girl from the Golding family in Millstone Peak. I need to hurry back and tell them. Don’t marry anyone from the Golding family! Who knows what kind of character their girls really have!"
"They all share the same bloodline. If one whore pops up, there’s no telling if another one will. Your nephew should just find a girl from a different family. It’s better to be safe than sorry!"
"Exactly! There are plenty of good girls out there. Why get hung up on one from the Golding family?"
"That’s completely unreasonable! Every family has a black sheep that brings them shame! We have plenty of good girls in the Golding family. This whore is just a rotten apple that spoiled the bunch! Don’t condemn the entire family because of one person!"
Someone in the crowd couldn’t stand it anymore. She was a woman from the Golding family who had married out, about the same age as Phoenix Golding, so of course she knew her. She had come to town to sell eggs today, only to stumble upon the rare spectacle of a "loose woman" parade—and of someone she recognized, no less.
She didn’t care that Phoenix Golding was being publicly shamed; a whore like that deserved to die. But now, the reputation of all the girls from the Golding family was being dragged through the mud by this bitch. She still had several unmarried nieces back in her maiden family!
The woman was furious. She picked up a rock from the ground and hurled it, striking Phoenix Golding on the forehead. Blood began to stream out. Phoenix’s body trembled with pain, but she didn’t dare to look up or even wipe it away. She let the blood run down, blurring her vision and leaving her mind increasingly dazed.
"You filthy whore! You’ve completely shamed the Golding family! Why don’t you just go and die!"
One rock wasn’t enough for the woman; she picked up several more and kept throwing them. If her nieces’ marriage prospects were ruined because of this, even killing this whore wouldn’t satisfy her rage.
With someone taking the lead, others quickly followed suit. Pebbles, rotten vegetable scraps, stinking fish and shrimp... even smelly shoes rained down on Phoenix Golding and the fat man. Before long, the two of them looked like a walking trash heap—filthy, stinking, and covered in blood. They were a pathetic sight.
"Everyone, listen to me for a moment! This filthy whore doesn’t represent the entire Golding family. I’m from the Thorne family of Millstone Peak, and I know the Goldings better than anyone. Aside from this whore’s immediate family, the rest of them are all hardworking, decent folk. The young men are capable, and the young women are clever and skilled."
Goldie Thorne banged on a washbasin a few more times and shouted at the top of his lungs. He had to clear the Golding family’s name. His Sixth Uncle had told him they must focus all their fire on Phoenix Golding’s family, but they couldn’t afford to offend the entire Golding clan.
"I know you. You’re Butcher Thorne’s brother, aren’t you? You’re right. Out of everyone in Millstone Peak, they’re the only shameless family. The rest are all good people."
Hearing this, the woman who had been throwing stones breathed a sigh of relief. She felt a surge of gratitude toward Goldie Thorne, and her hatred for Phoenix Golding naturally deepened. ’It’d be no great loss if that shameless rat dropping died.’ Tomorrow, she would go back to Millstone Peak and tell her Third Uncle about this, making sure that filthy whore was punished severely.
"That’s right, my big brother is Butcher Thorne. It was just a coincidence today. I came to town to buy some things and happened to stumble upon this shameless pair doing their filthy business. What a disgrace!"
Goldie Thorne admitted it readily. He wanted the Golding family to know that the Thornes were not to be trifled with. They dared to scheme against his second brother’s children, so he would make sure Phoenix Golding couldn’t even go on living!
’Even in death, her name would be cursed for a lifetime!’
