Chapter 388: Chapter 388: The Psycho Big Shot
Although she wanted to hit him, Tang Xiao’nan was rational. She knew this big shot was not someone to be trifled with, so she had to endure it. She began to take huge bites of food, deciding it was best just to keep him happy.
"That’s hideous. You should take smaller bites." Madman Ye’s gaze grew even more disdainful, his words piercing her like a knife.
Adrian Hawthorne was worried, afraid Tang Xiao’nan wouldn’t be able to stomach the abuse. At home, the girl was treated like a little empress, and she even ran amok in her own village. How could she possibly endure such harsh words? But to his surprise, Tang Xiao’nan held it all in. No matter what vicious things Madman Ye said, she obediently did as he told her.
"I’m finished."
Tang Xiao’nan had finished one shrimp dumpling.
"Why were you sneaking glances at me just now?" Madman Ye asked coldly.
Tang Xiao’nan’s heart leaped into her throat. She swallowed hard, frantically trying to find the right words—an answer that wouldn’t make the big shot angry. But the more anxious she got, the blanker her mind became. Madman Ye pressed, "Is it that hard to answer? Were you trying to look at my eyes?"
"No, I wasn’t looking at your eyes."
Tang Xiao’nan quickly looked up to explain, only to meet his eyes directly. It was impossible to look away. ’We’re so done for,’ she thought. ’This Madman Ye is definitely a gangster, and a local tyrant at that. There’s no way we’re going to escape.’
"This time doesn’t count. You looked at me, I didn’t look at you."
Tang Xiao’nan explained haltingly. She wanted to look away, but was afraid that being too deliberate would only make him angrier. All she could do was stare blankly ahead, feeling as if she were sitting on pins and needles.
Adrian Hawthorne stood up to go over to them, but Aston Marsh held him down. "Madman Ye didn’t call for you, so it’s best you don’t go. Let’s just wait and see. I don’t think anything will happen."
After all his years in Capria, he’d never heard of Madman Ye picking on a child.
Madman Ye glanced coolly at Adrian Hawthorne and the others, then asked Tang Xiao’nan, "Are they with you?"
Tang Xiao’nan nodded.
"You’re here to ask me for a favor?"
Tang Xiao’nan hesitated for a moment before nodding again. "People say you’re very powerful, and that there’s nothing you can’t get done."
A flicker of amusement crossed Madman Ye’s eyes again. He asked deliberately, "And what else have you heard about me?"
"Nothi—"
"Tell the truth. I hate it when children lie!" Madman Ye cut her off, his voice so icy it made Tang Xiao’nan’s teeth ache.
Tang Xiao’nan swallowed with difficulty, her back drenched in sweat. She’d never been this nervous, not even when she faced her most difficult clients back in the day. ’A difficult client just meant a lost deal, at worst,’ she thought. ’But this psycho could actually kill me.’
"That I’m not supposed to look you in the eye."
Tang Xiao’nan mustered up her courage and said it, sneaking a peek from the corner of her eye. When Madman Ye looked over, she immediately averted her gaze, trying to look prim and proper, though inside she was a complete nervous wreck.
"Then why did you sneak a look anyway?" Madman Ye asked again. He clearly cared a great deal about people looking at his eyes. But Tang Xiao’nan truly couldn’t figure it out. ’His eyes look perfectly normal,’ she wondered. ’Why is he so against people looking at them?’
"I only glanced for a second! I didn’t see anything!" Tang Xiao’nan pleaded, looking at Madman Ye with pitiful eyes. ’I really didn’t see a thing! Can’t he just let a kid off the hook? A big shot should have some magnanimity, shouldn’t he?’
"You didn’t see anything from that close?"
But this only seemed to pique Madman Ye’s interest further. He clearly had no intention of letting Tang Xiao’nan go.
A wave of nameless anger surged through Tang Xiao’nan. ’These questions are ridiculous,’ she fumed internally. ’Of course I saw clearly from this close! Is there any point to his incessant nagging?’
"I saw."
Tang Xiao’nan nodded, deciding to go for broke. ’He can’t possibly gouge my eyes out, can he?’ she thought. ’We live in a society governed by laws, after all.’
"What did you see?"
"Eyes, a nose, ears, a head, a mouth, a skull."
Tang Xiao’nan listed them off one by one, then added, "And a mustache."
