Chapter 373: Chapter 373: Immortal Aunt Liu is Finally Arrested
During lunch the next day, Nancy made a point of watching Mark Xavier, but she didn’t see him go out to steal any rice stalks. As they headed to school that afternoon, Nancy whispered to him, "Did you eat lunch?"
Mark nodded, his eyes filled with gratitude. His uncles had come over last night and given his father and stepmother a good scolding. He’d actually gotten to eat today. Even though it was just leftovers, he was already quite content.
’It must have been Nancy and her grandpa,’ he thought. ’That’s why Grandpa Huxley went to find my uncles. Anyone else would have stayed out of another family’s business. Even though Grandpa Huxley isn’t from one of the main village families, he’s highly respected, and his words carry a lot of weight.’
Nancy breathed a sigh of relief. ’As long as he’s eating, that’s good.’ Seeing Mark still clutching a tiny pencil stub to write, she offered him a new pencil. "Here, use this."
Mark was too embarrassed to accept, feeling he could never repay the favor. Nancy just stuffed the pencil into his desk drawer. "I have tons of them."
’I should help where I can,’ Nancy thought, not expecting anything in return. ’In my past life, I’d give money to disabled people I saw on the street. Doing what little good you can will surely bring good karma.’
’The karma might not be obvious; it might work in subtle, unseen ways, affecting things without you ever noticing, like the butterfly effect. If everyone does a little good, the world will become a better and better place.’ Nancy truly believed that.
"Thank you."
Mark thanked her in a small voice and carefully put the pencil away. He figured this one pencil could last him for at least a year.
Nancy smiled, not giving it a second thought. It was a small matter, and besides, she really did have a lot of pencils, notebooks, and scratch paper. Lana Steiner was a teacher and had plenty of supplies. All the stationery in their house came from Lana, so they never had to buy any.
During the break after the first class of the afternoon, a police siren suddenly started wailing. WEE-WOO! WEE-WOO! All the students scrambled to the roof to see what was happening, Nancy and Amanda included. The school was three stories tall, and the view from the roof was expansive. In the distance, they could faintly make out a police car heading toward Rosillia Village.
"They’re arresting someone! What’s happening in Rosillia Village?" someone yelled.
Nancy’s heart skipped a beat. ’Rosillia Village... Could it be Immortal Liu?’
"Quincy the Mutt! What’s happening in your village?" someone hollered.
The boy they called Quincy the Mutt was from Rosillia Village. He shook his head. "How should I know? I’ll find out when I get home. I’ll tell you all tomorrow."
The police car soon disappeared from view, and the class bell rang, sending everyone back to their classrooms. After two more periods, school was let out for the day. Nancy and Amanda headed home together. While they were on the main road, the police car appeared again, this time on its way back to the city.
The two girls stood by the side of the road and peered through the window. They could see a woman in her forties with a miserable, weeping face sitting in the back, enclosed by iron bars and watched over by several police officers.
"It’s Immortal Liu! She’s been arrested!"
Other children suddenly started shouting. They were from Rosillia Village, so of course they recognized Immortal Liu.
Nancy couldn’t help but smile. ’So it really was that wicked woman. The police finally made their move.’
"Amanda, let’s go tell Grandma!"
Nancy’s spirits soared. She grabbed Amanda’s hand and took off running, eager to share the good news with Raina.
But she didn’t need to. Raina already knew. Goldie Thorne had run back and told her. By the time Nancy arrived home, Raina was already at Linden Golding’s front door, giving him a piece of her mind.
"You black-hearted bastard! You knew perfectly well that ’Immortal’ Liu was a fraud who’d harm people, but you still introduced her medicine to our Lana Steiner! You just wanted to see my family fall on hard times, didn’t you! You’re ruining families, aren’t you afraid of retribution?! After you die, you’ll be thrown in a wok of boiling oil and made to climb a mountain of knives! In your next life, you’ll come back as a pig, and my Felix will be the one to slit your throat, gut you, carve the meat from your bones, and then we’ll cook you up and eat you!"
