Chapter 333: Chapter 333: A Little Scheme
"Alright. I reckon she’ll go again tomorrow or the day after. That damn whore goes every two or three days. She’s a busy one." Goldie Thorne had already figured out Phoenix Golding’s routine; his half-month stakeout hadn’t been for nothing.
Byron Thorne sneered. "So that damn whore has hooked up with a school district leader. No wonder a complete dunce like her managed to secure a permanent position. Goldie, you tail that bitch. See what kind of shady business she’s up to with that leader."
’That damn whore wanted to leave my son without any heirs, so I’ll make sure her name is dragged through the mud.’
The Thorne family’s dinner was lavish and lively, but the Spann family’s was bleak and quiet. On the table, there was only a bowl of stir-fried greens and a bowl of steamed preserved mustard greens. Phoenix Golding’s back hurt badly, and she lay in bed groaning. Jacqueline Spann was the one who brought her meal in, and she had even fried an egg just for her. Otherwise, Phoenix Golding would have surely thrown another fit.
"Fry an egg for Yuhai, too."
Phoenix Golding only remembered her precious son after a few bites. Without the free meat provided by Felix Thorne, the quality of their meals had plummeted. The only thing that could satisfy their cravings was eggs.
Jacqueline Spann lowered her eyelids, hiding the hatred in her eyes, and replied in a low voice, "I already fried one. You and Yuhai each get one."
Only then was Phoenix Golding satisfied and continued eating. But one egg wasn’t nearly enough, and the preserved mustard greens, without any meat, were so coarse they scratched her throat. Phoenix Golding forced down a few mouthfuls before she couldn’t eat anymore. Her lower back was throbbing with pain. The back injury Phoebe Huxley had given her hadn’t fully healed, and now that damn girl had injured her again. What infuriated her even more was Felix Thorne’s cruelty.
He’d also said so many nasty things, which hurt more than when Phoebe Huxley had hit her. Of course, Phoenix Golding didn’t care about Felix Thorne—that ugly man didn’t even qualify as a backup. She only enjoyed the way he was so attentive, eager, and subservient around her, and of course, the meat. Now, all of that was gone. Phoenix Golding felt an empty, sour bitterness and hatred in her heart.
’I’m a hundred times better than that bandit woman, Phoebe Huxley, yet Felix Thorne actually said I couldn’t compare to her. Hmph! That blind, stinking man! A day will come when he’ll regret this!’
"This is disgusting. I’m not eating."
Thinking about these vexing matters ruined her appetite even more. Phoenix Golding ate only the egg before slamming her chopsticks down. She unleashed a torrent of misplaced anger on Jacqueline Spann. "All you know how to do all day is cook this pig slop! Even pigs wouldn’t eat this! What’s the point of raising a good-for-nothing like you!"
Jacqueline Spann dodged Phoenix Golding’s chopsticks but was still struck several times. She defended herself in a small voice, "This is all the food we have in the house."
"Then why can’t you make it taste better? You’ve been cooking for so long, and all you can make is pig slop! You’re a useless piece of trash!"
No matter what happened, Phoenix Golding would always push the blame onto Jacqueline Spann. Without a second thought, she would beat her just to vent her anger.
After being hit a few more times, the hatred in Jacqueline Spann’s heart grew stronger. But on the surface, she still maintained a meek and submissive appearance, which only made Phoenix Golding despise her more. ’This damn girl is exactly like Vernon Spann. No wonder father and daughter are so in sync—they’re both ungrateful wolves you can never tame.’
Tired from the beating, Phoenix Golding waved her hand in annoyance and told Jacqueline Spann to get lost.
Jacqueline Spann bit her lip and asked softly, "What if I catch some rabbits for us to raise? That way, we’ll have meat to eat. I saw Tang Xiaonan and her cousin are raising several rabbits, and they seem easy to keep."
Phoenix Golding’s spirits lifted. "Their family is raising rabbits? You saw it with your own eyes?"
"Mhm, they’re raising them in Third Grandma’s backyard. There are quite a few. I could ask Uncle to go to the mountains and catch some rabbits for us to raise, too." Jacqueline Spann asked cautiously, her hands clenched so tightly into fists that her nails dug into her palms.
