Chapter 412: Chapter 412: Epileptic Seizure
"You’re going to watch a movie, huh? We were just planning to go too." Fang Wenjie heard Yi Roujing’s suggestion and thought about the Dai siblings and the Gu siblings also going, so he couldn’t help but blurt it out. Most importantly, it was their original plan.
Tian Meimei chimed in, "I heard they’ve just introduced a few movies from Hong Kong. We were thinking of going after dinner. Since you guys are going too, let’s go together."
Guo Xiangxiang felt a bit awkward but couldn’t refuse. Seeing that Yi Roujing and her group had no objections, she nodded in agreement, "Sure."
Dongji City’s cinema is right opposite the state-run restaurant. Today is July 22nd, coincidentally a Saturday, and also the time when students start their summer vacations. Naturally, the cinema shouldn’t be empty, but today it wasn’t crowded.
"Lately, everyone’s busy harvesting wheat, so at least no one’s fighting with us for seats. Usually, it’s not easy to get tickets," Tian Meimei remarked.
Guo Xiangxiang went to buy tickets and got them for everyone. Seeing this, Tian Meimei felt a bit embarrassed.
"Xiangxiang, we should buy our own; otherwise, how can we join you? If it were going to be like this, I wouldn’t have suggested it," Tian Meimei said, handing over money for herself and Fang Wenjie.
Fang Wenjie quickly took out money from his pocket, producing a dollar and fifty cents, "I’ll pay for myself too."
Tian Meimei sighed as she saw the determination in Fang Wenjie’s eyes and took back half the money. She didn’t want to hurt his self-esteem, but she also wanted to give him whatever she had.
"Thank you," Fang Wenjie thanked Tian Meimei, which to her was a sign of his genuine affection. But to Yi Roujing’s group, who weren’t aware of their relationship, it seemed like he was drawing a line.
There was still some time before the movie started. Guo Xiangxiang went to deliver food to her grandma and came back just in time to enter the theater.
Baozi was watching a movie for the first time. Although he had passed by the cinema many times, he had never gone inside. Due to his limited literacy, he couldn’t understand the films.
Therefore, the eldest sister always chose movies from Hong Kong, and Yi Roujing chose an animated film "The Fox Hunting" for Baozi. Luckily, Yi Roujing hadn’t seen it either, so they could watch it together.
The feature of animated films at this time was their brevity. After finishing one, Guo Xiangxiang and her group might have just started watching. Seeing Baozi’s delighted face, Yi Roujing bought another animated film ticket for them to watch together.
Throughout the movie, Baozi was glued to the big screen. With the help of pinyin annotations, he was able to understand the characters. Even though he hadn’t started school, Baozi had already started to learn on his own, asking when in doubt. His character recognition was on par with an elementary school student, perhaps even better.
After the movie, Guo Xiangxiang’s group wasn’t done yet, so Yi Roujing took Baozi to buy snacks in the cinema corridor. The selection wasn’t vast, just popcorn, candy sticks, soda, some roasted sunflower seeds, peanuts, and candies.
Yi Roujing ordered sodas, candy sticks, and popcorn, buying enough for everyone.
By the time Guo Xiangxiang’s group finished their movie, they saw a setup that could serve a stall’s worth of sodas, with Baozi sitting behind the soda bottles, gnawing on a candy stick, and Yi Roujing standing and grabbing handfuls of popcorn to eat.
"Roujing (Cousin-in-law)," seeing such an earthy Yi Roujing, Guo Xiangxiang’s group felt a bit helpless.
"Come on, hurry and eat. Everyone gets a bottle, but remember to return the bottle. These popcorn and candy sticks go well with soda, tastes great." Yi Roujing remarked, crunching on the fragrant, crispy popcorn, savoring the authentic flavors of that era.
"Oh no, how can we accept this?" Tian Meimei hesitated.
"It’s fine, I’m married among you all and have a child, so I’m naturally the eldest. It’s my duty," Yi Roujing said, as if it were only right.
Guo Xiangxiang, the Dai siblings, and a few others started grabbing snacks. The others took sodas and began to eat the popcorn.
"Roujing, what’s your major at Jing University?" Tian Meimei asked, trying to get closer to Yi Roujing.
"Oh, I’m studying medicine."
"Ah—"
Almost as soon as Yi Roujing finished her sentence, a scream came from the road nearby. Everyone instinctively looked, only to see a young man lying on the ground, convulsing and foaming at the mouth.
Initially, the onlookers were scared and backed away. But seeing that the person on the ground was only convulsing, rolling his eyes, and foaming at the mouth, some kind-hearted people stepped in to help restrain him.
"What’s going on, what’s happening?"
"Looks like epilepsy. I’ve seen this before."
"He should be taken to the hospital."
...
"Don’t press down on his limbs." Yi Roujing handed Baozi to Dai Zhenyan and went over herself.
"Everybody step back a bit, give the patient some breathing room." Yi Roujing scattered the crowd, unbuttoned the man’s collar, and took out a clean handkerchief from her pocket, stuffing it into the man’s mouth.
"By stuffing his mouth, won’t his saliva be unable to come out?" Someone questioned her actions.
Yi Roujing turned the man’s head to the side and replied without looking up, "If you don’t put something in his mouth, he might bite his own tongue."
Yi Roujing’s eyes were sharp. She quickly opened her bag and took out an army-green long-sleeve shirt, which was Baozi’s jacket, and a sweat towel also meant for Baozi. Without thinking, she covered the man’s lower body with them. "Xiangxiang, come and help."
Wu Cuihua, a nursing student, also came over. Seeing Yi Roujing and Guo Xiangxiang working seamlessly together, she addressed the surrounding people, "Hello everyone, we are students from East Province University. This is a student from Jing University Medical Department, and she will help this comrade. If you have things to attend to, feel free to leave; we’ll make sure he gets to the hospital."
"If anyone knows this comrade, please inform his family that we’re taking him to Dongji Hospital," Wu Cuihua explained, clarifying the situation for the onlookers.
"Oh, so they’re medical students, and from Jing University no less. No wonder they’re so skillful; they surely know what’s going on."
"We were nurses before going to university, so rest assured." Guo Xiangxiang added, giving everyone even more peace of mind.
The young man with epilepsy finally stopped convulsing after ten minutes, gradually coming to his senses.
Upon regaining consciousness, the young man immediately noticed his situation. He looked down and saw a small jacket on him. Apart from being dusty, and having a handkerchief in his mouth, nothing else was visible.
At least he clearly felt the curious and sympathetic gazes around him, but there was no disdain.
"Mom." Baozi, holding a soda bottle, walked over and stumbled near the young man, causing the soda to smash on the ground, soaking the young man’s pants.
