The process of coordinating with other teams was much smoother than Cornflower had imagined.
Although the gathering of the Magical Girl army here included many teenagers, it was generally considered inhumane to send ten-year-old children to the front lines, as it was not practically meaningful.
Thus, Cornflower smoothly relocated two other ten-year-old graduates from the Silver Corridor away from their original teams, moving them to the rear.
"Did you ask for my opinion! I don't want to go to the rear! I want to fight with everyone!" During the process, one of the involved parties expressed considerable dissatisfaction.
"This is an order from above, soldier." Cornflower did not allow them the right to object.
It wasn't just her in action; the entire Luennolay City Defense Army was undergoing various personnel changes, and the tense atmosphere of impending storm filled the city, growing heavier as days passed, making it hard for people to breathe.
Two days after Cornflower completed these personnel arrangements, the Interworld Army arrived.
They came without suspense, openly. However, their formidable combat power was like a heavy hammer, almost breaching Luennolay's defenses.
Too strong, unrealistically strong, completely unlike the Interdimensional Joint Army Cornflower had dealt with before.
Especially those new Remnant Beasts in the battlefield, possessing higher intelligence and more substantial magic power for some reason, almost every one of them turned into a war machine once they entered the battlefield.
Even though Luennolay's army had set traps in the suburbs and repelled several waves of attacks, they still couldn't stop the front line from being pushed step by step towards the city.
Fortunately, reinforcements arrived three days after the Interworld Army launched their attack.
As one of the Magic Kingdom's most important cities, the Royal Court could not allow Luennolay to be conquered just like that, leading to an extremely intense tug-of-war around Luennolay City's outskirts.
In just half a month, ordinary soldiers and magicians' fatalities easily broke five figures, even Magical Girls' casualties had early surpassed three figures, constantly approaching four figures.
Yet, even amidst such fierce battles, Cornflower's squad maintained zero casualties.
As the Captain, Cornflower basically monitored her squad's battlefield throughout, not only executing quick killstrikes on enemy units but also supporting all her teammates with her Magic Armor and Miracle Realm.
Thanks to her efforts, the mortality rate of ordinary soldiers in the same battle zone remained extremely low; with the Magical Girls gaining an advantage in the higher-level battle, naturally, more power was at hand to assist ordinary soldiers in repelling the enemy.
Thus, the length of the tug-of-war reached a month, and the advantage began to gradually shift to the Kingdom Army.
As the Interdimensional Joint Army personnel were dwindling and supplies were lacking, their offensive strength gradually waned. Once the situation was clear, the Royal Court redirected a significant portion of the military to the enemy's rear, attempting to reconstruct the third line of defense to cut off the Interworld Army's ongoing support.
The dawn of victory seemed genuinely about to arrive, lightening the mood of the Luennolay Army considerably.
Over the month, they had witnessed too many deaths and goodbyes, even for Cornflower's squad with no injuries, still losing many friends and comrades outside the team.
That night, Cornflower walked out of the military tent, gazing alone at the night sky.
She was very tired.
It wasn't just physical, the exhaustion of magic power repeatedly nearing depletion had tired her, but also mentally, weary of this endless vortex of death.
She couldn't help but start wondering, how long will this war go on?
She never doubted her position, believed in the justice the Magical Girls stood for, and in the legitimacy of protecting Luennolay's populace. But even if all this was correct, the ongoing casualties still weighed heavily on her heart.
She was strong, one of the elite aces in the frontal battlefield, yet above her were the Flower Card and King's Transformation.
If she could become a bit stronger, could it be that...
——"Captain?"
Cornflower's thoughts were interrupted by a voice drifting from not far away.
She turned to look, and saw Mo He there.
"So late, still not resting?" Cornflower asked curiously.
"Ah, I—I was going to rest, but I couldn't sleep, then heard some movement from the Captain's tent..." Mo He whispered, explaining.
"What's the matter?"
"No, just worried, whether something happened at the front and you received a notice of sorts..."
"Not at all, just wandering alone."
Cornflower flashed a comforting smile at Mo He: "You're overthinking, don't worry."
"Oh, oh, then I'm relieved." Mo He nodded: "Mainly, I saw Tulip today."
"What about her?"
"Things seem bad, she fainted while working."
Mo He pinched her left wrist with her right hand: "I overheard her on the stretcher repeating 'doomed' and 'it's coming' and such as I passed with medicine."
"She's indeed been like that lately, and the people in logistics think she's too stressed."
Cornflower shook her head: "As long as she's alright, perhaps she can take this opportunity to rest well."
"That too, haha." Mo He gave a dry laugh in agreement.
"...Do you think what she said is true?" Cornflower raised an eyebrow.
"Ah, no, not really." Mo He waved her hand: "But...some folks in logistics and other squads think it's true."
"What about you?"
"I...sort of believe a little." Mo He murmured.
"I also had a moment before."
"Huh, uh, huh? The Captain?"
"Yes, I was a bit worried before as well."
Cornflower candidly: "Because Tulip has no reason to deceive everyone, so somewhat believing makes sense."
"And now..."
"Now, the most dangerous time has passed as well."
Cornflower smiled: "With the enemy's offensive weakening and the third line being rebuilt, there should be no issue, after all, it's impossible for the enemy to spring up suddenly."
"The Captain's words make sense too." Mo He scratched her cheek.
"Furthermore."
Cornflower slightly raised her voice, proudly saying: "Even if they really organize an attack again, you shouldn't be afraid, being my team member, I'm here for you!"
She didn't share her prior thoughts with Mo He.
"As long as I'm here, I'll eliminate all strong enemies, and won't let any teammates in my sight get hurt!"
As if motivating herself, Cornflower earnestly: "I'll do this, or rather, I've been doing this, and must continue doing this!"
"Captain..." Mo He clasped her hands together, showing a look of admiration.
"Now then, can you relax a little?" Cornflower placed one hand on her waist.
Perhaps she couldn't change the entire battlefield, but she could at least ensure those within her sight survived.
"Yes, I believe in the Captain!" Mo He nodded repeatedly.
"So go to sleep! Demobilize immediately and take a good rest!" Cornflower issued a dismissal.
"That, um, Captain!"
"Anything else?"
"Well, about my sister before."
Mo He stammered: "Thank you for having the Commander transfer Nim to..."
——"Boom"!
Before she could finish, a violent explosion overshadowed Mo He's words.
Towering flames erupted in the distance, and the deafening roar made one shudder involuntarily. The intense shockwave carried the airflow, blowing away fallen leaves, and also swept up Mo He and Cornflower's hair.
After the explosion, absolute silence ensued as if nothing had ever happened, making one doubt if all was just illusion.
Cornflower and Mo He stood staring at each other, momentarily stunned in place.
Seconds later, both of their Magic Mirrors sounded a notification.
They silently connected the calls, then heard the same notification or rather, directive:
"Enemy surprise attack! Enemy surprise attack! Enemy bypassed the third line of defense and the outskirts, launching a direct assault towards the city!"
"Repeat, the enemy bypassed the third line of defense and surroundings, directly attacking the city! Suspected target is the small Boundary Gate leading to the Garden!"
——"All notified Luennolay City Defense Army, now, immediately return to defense!"
