Aldo still looked uneasy, so I decided to take him and Kathy with me to see Gem. I figured that if I could settle things in front of them, they would feel more at ease.
However, perhaps because they were nervous about the flying carriage, they were both silent and looking outside.
Shenley also looked at me anxiously. “Are we really going to Marquis Gem’s place? I’ve never heard of anyone directly refusing a marriage proposal from a high-ranking noble…”
“It’s alright. If my student is in danger, it’s my duty to remove the danger. Please don’t worry,” I replied with a sense of duty as a teacher. This was a major event that would determine Shenley’s future. Even if it meant facing a whole country, I wouldn’t back down.
When I went to the imperial palace and asked Alabarta for the location, he offered to accompany us. I reluctantly agreed and let him get on the carriage.
“Ah, Lord Alabarta, I wouldn’t expect to meet you here.”
“Hmm… Oh, Viscount Rosentiel? It’s rare for us to have a direct conversation like this. Ah, yes, I remember now. You mentioned Shenley is Viscount Rosentiel’s daughter. I was careless,” Alabarta said in a loud voice with a wry smile.
Aldo conveyed politely that there was no problem. Maple Leaf seemed to have a strong hierarchy between nobles. Well, maybe it was like that in any country, but it felt like watching the relationship between the president of a large company and the president of a small subcontracting company, which made me feel sad. Wouldn’t Shenley and Kathy feel even more so?
While I was thinking about such things, we arrived at our destination. Apparently, due to the incident in the audience chamber the other day, he was in a state close to confinement.
In other words, we arrived at the home of Gem Westmeath, the deputy chief magician.
“It’s exceptionally large, considering it’s within the Holy City,” I voiced my thoughts.
Alabarta smiled wryly. “Let me tell you, the Marquis Westmeath family is a prestigious family that has always produced court magicians, and they have established their position not only as nobles but also as magicians. Naturally, they also have wealth.”
“I see.” I nodded at Alabarta’s words and looked at Gem’s mansion again. It looked like a Western-style building made of bricks, but its size was amazing. It was like a giant gymnasium. It looked like there were at least fifty rooms. However, since the Viscount Rosentiel mansion was of a similar size, they didn’t seem to be particularly impressed.
In front of the towering gate stood two guards, who were surprised when the carriage descended from the sky.
“Is Lord Gem here?” Alabarta called out to the soldiers.
They looked at him for a moment, seemingly wondering who he was. But it seemed like his title of vice-captain of the Imperial Guards was well-known. They quickly remembered Alabarta’s face and position and straightened their backs. “Yes, sir! The head of the family is working in the mansion! Do you have an appointment?”
“No, Aoi Konominato, a senior teacher at the Fiddiq Academy, is here today with a request for Lord Gem. We need to see him urgently,” Alabarta announced.
The two soldiers looked at each other, and one of them immediately went inside.
Soon, the soldier returned. “The head of the family says he will see you. I apologize for the wait. Please come in.”
Even though it wasn’t Japanese-style, the soldier responded politely. His eyes were directed towards Alabarta, so he had to be someone they were quite nervous about.
I was a little uncomfortable because I felt that he was a serious but easygoing middle-aged man.
While thinking about this, I followed Alabarta, who walked straight ahead with long strides, and eventually reached our destination.
The soldier knocked twice and opened the door. Inside, we found Gem sitting in the back of a fairly large room. But he looked a little strange.
Gem was sitting with his back hunched, resting his head on his hands with his elbows on the desk. In front of him was a glass bottle and a cup.

Seeing the pale amber liquid in the cup, Alabarta’s eyes sharpened. “Lord Gem, we apologize for the sudden visit. We are very grateful for your time… but you look rather drunk.”
Gem snorted and looked at us, eyes completely fixed. “… Even I get drunk. I made a terrible mistake in front of His Majesty. Why did this happen? Did I make a mistake? I’ve been thinking about this, so now I’m in this state.”
Then he looked at me.
“But thanks to that, I’ve found the answer. It was something I should have realized had I thought about it carefully. After all, it’s so far removed from common sense that it’s simply impossible,” Gem murmured.
His sickly state made not only Shenley but also Kathy gasp. Aldo quietly observed Gem’s movements, but he seemed very wary.
“What is impossible?” Alabarta asked.
Gem turned his eyes back to Alabarta, then immediately pointed at me. In doing so, his arm hit the bottle on the desk, causing it to fall and the sound of glass shattering to echo in the room.
“What?! It must be her magic! Just watch!” he shouted, picked up a shard of broken glass from the bottle, and threw it at me.
