Chapter 61: The Wrong Reaction
Kaiser:
For several long seconds after the papers landed across the dining table, nobody moved.
Nobody reached for them.
Nobody spoke.
The entire dining hall remained frozen under a silence so heavy that it almost felt alive. Morning sunlight still poured through the tall windows exactly the same as before. Breakfast still sat untouched. And somehow that normal morning setting only made everything feel more surreal.
My eyes never left Charlotte.
I didn’t need to look at the papers. I had already memorized every page. Every name. Every transfer. Every timestamp. Every message. And every detail that shattered any possibility of coincidence.
But then Alastor finally moved, but not toward Charlotte or toward the evidence. No. His gaze shifted from the papers and landed on me with an unreadable expression on his face. And then he asked, "What are these?"
I stared at him. And for a second I genuinely thought he was asking something else.
Then I realized-
No. He wasn’t questioning the accusation. He was asking what exactly I had thrown in front of him.
My eyes remained on Charlotte as I answered in a calm voice. "Enough proof to show Charlotte hired assassins from the Scorpions to kill those guards."
The room became quieter somehow. And before either of my brothers could even move, Charlotte spoke.
She was fast. Too fast. Like she couldn’t let anyone touch those papers. Her expression remained wounded, but I noticed her fear was changing. Her brows pulled together as she started slowly shaking her head, as if disappointed.
Her eyes landed on me as she spoke quietly, "These are forged."
I almost smiled.
She continued, "The Scorpions don’t leave trails." Her voice grew steadier. Stronger. She looked toward Alastor and Darien. "They are known for that."
Then she looked back at me.
"If they accepted a mission... how exactly did Kaiser find information against me?"
She looked hurt. Confused. Wronged. As if she genuinely couldn’t understand. As if she wasn’t panicking beneath that expression.
I looked at her, and suddenly, I almost admired her. Because every time she recovered beautifully. Someone who didn’t know better would have started doubting. Would hae thought she might actually be innocent.
But unlike before, this time neither Darien nor Alastor immediately reacted the way she wanted them to. Because they knew I wasn’t stupid enough to walk in here with fake documents. They knew I had ways to get information even from The Scorpions.
I smiled coldly as I pointed out. "You sound informed."
Her expression paused just for a moment. And she narrowed her eyes.
I tilted my head. "You seem very confident about how Scorpions operate."
For one second, she hesitated. But then her shoulders straightened and she answered immediately. "Everyone grew up hearing stories about them." Her voice sharpened slightly. "What’s strange about knowing something?"
Then she pointed at the papers and redirected instantly while looking directly at me. "Don’t change the subject." Her eyes glistened while her voice cracked. "You forged this evidence. Just so you could destroy me."
Her gaze became wounded as she looked at my brothers. "Just because you hated me. Because Lady Rosalie left."
It was almost amusing to watch how much she trusted The Scorpions and their promises to call my evidence forged. Enough to believe there was no possible way for me to know. Enough to think I was bluffing.
She was already cornered and she couldn’t even see it.
I looked at her. Then finally decided to end it. My smile widened slightly, but there was no warmth in it, only satisfaction. And then I said, "One of my close friends works for The Scorpions."
Charlotte froze.
I continued, "He’s senior rank."
Her expression didn’t move. She went too still.
I kept speaking, "He’s high enough to access information." There was still silence. I watched carefully. "He’s high enough to see contracts."
Her breathing changed.
I took one slow step closer, and lowered my voice. "You thought nobody would ever find out. You thought those guards dying would end the problem. You thought Rosalie would remain the unstable liar."
I stopped and looked directly into her eyes.
"But there is nowhere left to hide now."
Her face changed. Not dramatically or immediately. But I saw it.
I continued quietly, "No more pretending. No more innocent victim. Because now we know you hired those men and sent them after Rosalie to harm her. And when they became a liability, you paid The Scorpions."
I smiled and finished, "You lost."
That was it. That was the moment. Because suddenly, something snapped. Charlotte’s expression cracked, just enough to be noticed. Her eyes widened and her breathing became sharp. And suddenly she shouted-
"How could they!"
The room froze as her voice echoed. She stared at me with a pale face. Anger exploded across her features, and her eyes were still filled with disbelief.
"How could they leak information?!"
Nobody moved.
She didn’t notice and kept going. Her voice shaking with outrage. "They promised confidentiality!" Her breathing grew harder. "They guaranteed nobody would ever know-"
She stopped.
Everything stopped. And the silence afterward felt deafening. Her eyes widened as she realized way too late that she had slipped. Her face emptied. Then slowly, her head turned to look at Alastor and Darien.
I watched it happen.
Her frightened eyes slowly returned to me, and the look she gave me, I would remember for a long time. Because there was hatred. Pure hatred.
She knew I won.
Not because she confessed. But because she forgot to lie. And suddenly, I felt something ugly inside my chest relax. And no it wasn’t satisfaction or happiness, but confirmation.
I turned immediately and looked at my brothers, waiting. Finally they saw the truth and heard it with their own eyes and ears. Finally their would understand and realize just how badly they had messed up because if this woman.
As I looked at my brothers, I expected anger, shock, questions. I expected them to turn toward Charlotte. Expected something.
Instead, they looked at me.
Not at her. But me.
I frowned.
Darien looked tense, while Alastor’s expression was unreadable.
Then, Alastor spoke. He sounded calm and controlled. Actually way too controlled.
"Kaiser."
I stared.
His gaze held mine, and then he said, "We’ll talk about this later."
