Chapter 57: Alpha’s Acceptance
Rosalie:
Zaiden held my gaze.
For one long second, neither of us moved. His hand remained against the back of the couch beside my head while I stayed leaned back beneath him, unable to look anywhere except straight into those gray eyes. The room seemed quieter than before. Even the storm outside felt distant.
And then he answered, "I care... because you are my mate, Rosalie Hale."
His voice wasn’t loud. It wasn’t dramatic. If anything, he said it too calmly. Too simply. As if the answer should have been obvious. As if there had never been another possible answer.
His gaze stayed on mine as he continued in that same even tone, except something beneath it shifted... something deeper, quieter, and infinitely more dangerous.
"And I would rather die than let anyone hurt my mate."
My heart stopped.
Actually no. That wasn’t right. It didn’t stop. Instead, it forgot what rhythm was supposed to be.
Everything inside my chest seemed to collapse and then explode all at once. My mind blanked. Completely. And every thought disappeared. Charlotte disappeared. The room disappeared. Eiden disappeared. Even my own question disappeared. And all that remained was the man in front of me.
Zaiden Nightfang.
Leaning over me. Looking at me. Answering me.
And he just admitted that his concern and care toward me was not because of politics, was not because of obligation, and was not because of responsibility either. Instead, it was because... I was his mate.
He just spoke the word out loud. For the first time since that night when I stumbled into his arms and the bond came to life, he had addressed me as his mate. He had admitted the bond.
He didn’t imply toward it. He didn’t avoid it or tried to hide it behind pack politics and practical decisions.
He called me his mate.
And somehow it mattered to me way more than I thought. The words echoed in my head, again and again.
Suddenly, I couldn’t breathe properly. Couldn’t think properly. Too many emotions crashed together at once - shock, disbelief, warmth, fear, and something dangerously close to happiness.
And then there was something even more dangerous than happiness.
I had spent so long convincing myself not to expect things. Not to hope. Not to mistake duty for care. Not to let myself become attached. I had learned these lessons the hard way and had experienced the consequences just recently.
And now... now the Rogue Alpha stood in front of me and said something like that as if it cost him nothing.
My chest hurt. Because suddenly I couldn’t tell what was real anymore. Then before I could process any of that, something changed. His eyes moved. Slowly. They left mine, and dropped... to my lips.
My breath caught. And instantly, my entire body went still as I stared at him.
He wasn’t moving. Wasn’t saying anything. But somehow the room changed. The air changed. And horrifyingly, without meaning to, I felt my lips part. Only slightly. It was a tiny movement, a completely unconscious movement. And the second I realized what I was doing, my entire body froze.
Oh goddess.
I immediately pressed my lips together. Then made it worse by biting my lower lip. And regretted it instantly. Because the moment I did that, something in Zaiden’s expression changed.
His gaze darkened, and his throat moved as he visibly swallowed. And suddenly I forgot how oxygen worked.
His eyes returned to mine. They were still gray, and yet, not exactly gray. They had turned darker. So much darker than I had ever seen them. And for one terrifying second, I couldn’t look away.
Heat rushed through me so suddenly that I almost let out a startled gasp. It spread through my body too quickly. Starting somewhere deep in my chest and radiating outward.
The bond suddenly felt alive. Like something sleeping had opened its eyes. Or like warm embers buried beneath ashes suddenly remembered they could burn.
I became painfully aware of everything. Of him standing close. Of his voice still echoing in my head. Of his oversized shirt against my skin. Of my pulse. Of him.
Only him.
And then, something shifted.
I couldn’t explain it. But for the first time since meeting Zaiden, he didn’t look perfectly controlled. It lasted less than a second. Just a tiny crack. So brief I might have imagined it.
But I saw it.
Saw something in his eyes that looked less calm, less composed. And more... something else. And then it was gone.
Everything stopped. The charged atmosphere disappeared as suddenly as it appeared.
Zaiden straightened and stepped back, letting distance return between us. The air returned, thoughts returned. And before I could understand what just happened, movement pulled my attention away.
I blinked.
My eyes snapped downward where Eiden was still kneeling in front of me. Reality crashed back so fast my cheeks immediately heated.
Oh.
Goddess.
What had I just-
From the corner of my eye, I noticed Zaiden turning away. He started walking toward the door, but stopped there with his back facing us.
Eiden gently patted my hand again and the simple gesture grounded me. His expression remained warm as if nothing strange had happened, as if my entire nervous system hadn’t just collapsed.
His voice came softly, "You should sleep."
I looked at him.
He glanced toward the wall clock. "It’s already past midnight." Then he reached into his pocket and placed something into my hands.
I looked down and noticed it was an ointment tube.
His eyes flickered briefly toward my side. "It’s for your bruise. Apply this before sleeping."
I blinked. Right. The bruise. I had almost forgotten about it. I stared at the tube, then back at him.
He smiled. It was soft and gentle. And suddenly my chest hurt all over again.
"Good night, Rosa."
Then he stood, turned, and walked toward Zaiden.
I stayed frozen on the couch. Watching. Neither man looked back immediately. But then, right before stepping out, Zaiden turned his head just once. His gaze met mine, only for a moment. Then he looked away.
And both of them left.
The door closed behind them, leaving me alone in the quiet room. Still wearing Zaiden’s clothes. Still holding Eiden’s ointment. And still hearing...
Because you are my mate.
