Chapter 1: The Night Everything Changed
Rosalie:
I remember thinking I had never looked more beautiful.
It sounds foolish now... laughable even. But as I stood before the mirror in my chamber with my fingers trembling slightly as I smoothed down the soft fabric of my dress, my heart swelled with a kind of fragile, glowing hope I had spent years trying to bury.
It’s my twentieth birthday today, and tonight was the night I - Rosalie Hale - was finally going to stand beside them. Not in the shadows. Not as the girl they kept hidden behind closed doors and whispered meetings. But openly and proudly claimed as their mate.
A soft knock echoed against my door before it creaked open, and one of the pack maids peeked inside, offering a gentle smile. "Miss Rosalie... it’s time. The ceremony is about to begin."
My breath hitched for a moment.
I nodded, clutching the edge of my dress for a brief second before forcing my hands to relax. "Thank you. I’ll be there."
When the door closed again, silence filled the room once again, but it no longer felt suffocating. It actually felt electric now.
This was it. The moment I had dreamed of through stolen glances and quiet nights. Through every time Alastor’s gaze lingered a second too long, every time Darien’s voice softened when he spoke to me, every time Kaiser smirked at me like I was his secret.
They had said the words so many times in secret... I was theirs... and tonight, they would finally say it to the rest of the world as well.
I took one last look at myself.
My long black hair cascaded down my back in soft waves. My deep brown eyes were wide with nervous excitement. My skin looked almost too pale under the candlelight, but there was a faint flush on my cheeks that refused to fade.
I looked pretty, soft, and undeniably hopeful.
"Tonight," I whispered to my reflection, "everything changes."
- - -
The huge garden was already filled when I arrived.
Lanterns flickered against the night, casting dancing shadows across the gathered wolves of both packs. The air buzzed with anticipation as murmurs weaved through the crowd like a living thing.
Everyone was watching, waiting... for me.
My steps slowed as I reached the edge of the clearing. My heart was pounding so loudly I was certain everyone could hear it. And for a moment, I hesitated.
But then I saw them, standing at the center.
Three figures who had shaped my entire world without ever truly stepping into it.
Alastor stood slightly ahead of the others. His tall frame looked as rigid as usual, and his dark hair caught the light like strands of sunlight. His deep blue eyes were as unreadable as ever, cold and distant... and yet, when they flicked toward me, my chest tightened.
Darien stood to his right. His dark hair was neatly pulled back, and his green eyes looked warm... or at least, they used to be when he looked at me. But tonight, they seemed... different. Though I couldn’t place it.
And Kaiser, he was leaning just slightly, as though the world bored him. His longer black hair brushed his shoulders, and a familiar smirk played on his lips. It was the same smirk that kept making my stomach flutter.
My breath caught.
They were all here... waiting.
A small, nervous smile tugged at my lips as I stepped forward, the crowd parting to let me pass. I could feel their gazes - curious, expectant, some even envious.
Because tonight... I would become their Luna, their mate, their everything.
My pulse quickened as I approached them, stopping just a few steps away. The distance felt too small and too vast all at once.
No one spoke, stretching the silence. And then, Alastor’s gaze shifted... past me.
Not to me. But past me.
The warmth in my chest faltered. I blinked in confusion and glanced over my shoulder instinctively, but there was no one there.
When I turned back, Darien had also looked away. And Kaiser’s smirk had faded.
A strange unease curled in my stomach as I realized something was wrong.
The murmurs in the crowd grew louder, shifting in tone. What had once been anticipation now carried confusion, curiosity, and something sharper.
I swallowed, curling my fingers tightly at my sides as I called softly. "Alastor?" My voice was barely steady. "What’s-"
But before I could finish, a new presence entered the garden.
The crowd parted again, and this time not for me.
My heart stuttered as I turned, and my breath caught in my throat as I saw a very familiar woman walk forward like she belonged there. No - like she had always belonged there.
Her beauty was overwhelming. Golden hair cascaded down her back in perfect waves, her skin glew under the torchlight, and her features looked delicate yet striking in a way that demanded attention. She moved with effortless grace, her every step poised and elegant.
She looked perfect... and everything I wasn’t.
And the way the crowd reacted with soft gasps and whispers of admiration, it only made it clearer - she was extraordinary.
My chest tightened as I failed to understand why she was here. Did they invite her?
My gaze flickered back to them, to the three men who had never once looked at another woman the way they had looked at me... and my world shattered.
Because they were looking at her now.
Alastor stepped forward first, not toward me but toward her. Darien followed right after him with Kaiser.
Each step they took felt like something tearing inside my chest.
"No..." The word slipped out before I could stop it, barely audible.
They stopped in front of her. Close. Too close.
Alastor’s lifted his hand slowly and gently took hers. The gesture was soft, almost reverent. It was the kind of touch I had once dreamed would be mine only.
My vision blurred.
"What... is this?" My voice trembled, louder this time, cracking in a way that made my throat ache.
No one answered me. No one even looked at me. It was as if I no longer existed.
Darien turned to the crowd. His expression looked composed and his voice carried easily through the clearing.
"Tonight," he began, "we stand before both packs to announce something of great importance."
Kaiser’s arm slipped around the woman’s waist, pulling her slightly closer to them. His usual careless demeanor was now replaced by something protective and... possessive.
"She," Alastor said in a cold but steady voice, "is our fated mate."
My world stopped. For a moment, I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think, couldn’t understand.
Fated... mate?
My mind rejected the words even as they echoed through the clearing.
"No," I whispered, shaking my head slowly. "That’s... that’s not-"
"She is also," Darien continued in an unwavering voice, "carrying our child. The future heir of our packs."
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.
But I didn’t hear it.
All I could hear was the deafening roar of my own heartbeat.
Child.
Heir.
Mate.
Each word struck harder than the last.
My knees felt weak and my chest had started to burn.
"This is Charlotte," Kaiser added, his voice quieter but no less certain. "And she will stand as our Luna."
