Chapter 1125: 739 Adult Grudges and Resentments
Du Heng’s current job had finally stabilized, and compared to a month ago, he could finally relax.
At this time, however, Wu Shengnan was not only occupied with her studies, but her gradually bulging lower abdomen also left her feeling exhausted all day. So Du Heng had conscientiously taken on all the household chores.
That day was no exception. Du Heng began cooking as soon as he got home from work, while Wu Shengnan rested nearby.
However, Wu Shengnan wasn’t in a good mood today. Usually, when Du Heng was busy in the kitchen, Wu Shengnan would lean against the doorframe, even if she wasn’t helping, and share her day’s experiences and feelings with him. But today, she sat on the sofa, watching TV in angry silence.
"Who upset you?" Du Heng noticed Wu Shengnan’s unusual behavior and, taking a moment from his cooking, asked with concern.
Wu Shengnan snorted heavily. "It’s nothing. Just focus on what you’re doing."
Du Heng chuckled. "Come on, tell me. I’m just cooking here by myself, and it’s pretty boring anyway."
Hearing this, Wu Shengnan felt the urge to confide, but she wasn’t the gossiping type, so she hesitated.
Du Heng glanced back at her and smiled. "Just say it. Is there anything we, as a couple, can’t talk about?"
Encouraged by Du Heng again, Wu Shengnan finally spoke, though still hesitantly. "I told you before about that girl in our training class who’s around my age, remember?"
Du Heng nodded, continuing to prep vegetables. "You mentioned her last time, said she was a rather refined girl.
"I even told you, you two are similar in age, both women, and probably have similar family backgrounds—otherwise, she wouldn’t be in that training class.
"So, you should have common topics and the foundation to become good friends."
Du Heng glanced at Wu Shengnan, then returned to his task. "So, you two didn’t become good friends?"
Wu Shengnan adjusted her position on the sofa and said, frustrated and indignant, "Good friends? I think we’re about to become enemies."
"Enemies?" Du Heng chuckled. "You’re both there for advanced studies, and your workplaces are worlds apart. How could you become enemies?"
Wu Shengnan puffed out her cheeks. "I wish I knew!
"I just don’t get it. She’s always comparing me to herself, over every little thing."
Du Heng laughed. "Then just ignore her. Steer clear of people like that."
"The problem is, I can’t get away from her." Wu Shengnan’s eyes widened with anger. "She’s like chewing gum, always sticking to me no matter where I go."
"Then don’t engage with her," Du Heng continued, offering his not-so-helpful advice. "People like her are either consumed by jealousy, unable to stand seeing others do better than them,
"or they’re show-offs who constantly crave the spotlight.
"Both types have a mental illness; just ignore her."
Wu Shengnan nodded in agreement. "You’re right. She has a mental illness."
Then Wu Shengnan got up, walked into the kitchen, and stood beside Du Heng. "Remember those matching watches we bought for the New Year?"
Du Heng nodded. "What about them? Is she envious?" He chuckled. "If she’s envious, let her buy her own."
Wu Shengnan leaned on Du Heng’s shoulder and rolled her eyes. "What are you talking about? The first time she saw it, she loudly declared mine was a fake.
"She said it was too embarrassing and told me to take it off immediately."
As Wu Shengnan spoke, her nose wrinkled in annoyance. "She made it sound like she was looking out for me, but she was so loud everyone outside the classroom could hear her crystal clear.
"I was so furious, I brought the receipt in the next day."
Du Heng hadn’t expected Wu Shengnan to do something so childish; he’d thought she had no interest in such displays.
"Did she shut up then?"
Bringing it up only made Wu Shengnan angrier. "She’s such a bitch! First, she claimed my receipt was fake. Then, she started spreading rumors behind my back that you and my dad got the money through corruption. It made me so mad!"
"How did you find out?" Du Heng asked softly. "If she dared say that to your face, didn’t you slap her?"
"A classmate told me," Wu Shengnan said with a huff. "If she’d dared to say it to my face, I honestly might not have been able to stop myself from slapping her.
"That technical investigation rookie is just disgusting."
Du Heng grinned. "How about I go with you to your school tomorrow and see this ’female knight-errant’ for myself?
"I’d like to see what kind of extraordinary person dares to provoke our Brigade Leader Wu.
"Doesn’t she know our Brigade Leader Wu is a hero, distinguished for her role in capturing fugitives?"
Wu Shengnan shot Du Heng a look. "Go on, keep making light of it. I’m leaving; you get back to your work."
Du Heng laughed heartily. "I’m not going to the hospital tomorrow. After your morning classes end, I’ll come to your school to find you. You can introduce me to this woman.
"I’ll let her see for herself whether I’m the kind of person who engages in corruption."
Hearing this, Wu Shengnan finally managed a slight smile, but she still said stubbornly, "Hmph. Go if you want; it’s up to you."
And just like that, Wu Shengnan’s mood finally improved. As she was preparing to leave the next morning, she was still indirectly reminding Du Heng not to forget the promise he’d made her the previous night.
