Chapter 39: How about powered armor?

I left Marcos’s shop still thinking about that manual.

As I walked through the streets of the Commercial Center, my mind had already completely moved on from the negotiation.

It would hurt my wallet, but it would be worth acquiring that manual in the future.

Now, thinking about something else...

Once the artificial experience for the spells is complete...

I’ll accept an exploration mission.

I needed to gain real experience.

But only two spells...

And a few devices...

Still weren’t enough.

I slowly shook my head.

No.

There’s still one thing missing.

Protection.

My body remained my greatest weakness.

Even if I mastered magic.

Even if my devices were exceptional.

A single arrow.

A single claw.

Or a single ambush.

Would be enough to kill me.

That was when an idea began to take shape.

At first, slowly.

Then it became clearer and clearer.

I smiled.

A suit of armor.

But not a suit of plate armor like the ones worn by the knights of this world.

That was heavy.

It restricted movement.

It relied entirely on the user’s physical strength.

Besides...

It didn’t suit me.

I was an engineer.

If I was going to fight...

I would fight like an engineer.

My armor had to reflect that.

A powered suit of armor.

Driven by magical energy.

Capable of amplifying strength.

Speed.

Endurance.

And serving as a platform for future devices.

I immediately thought of Totil.

He was an engineer as well.

But our paths were completely different.

Totil rarely crafted weapons.

His specialty was producing sophisticated tools for wealthy mages.

Laboratory equipment.

Measuring instruments.

Artifacts designed to facilitate research.

His clientele paid extremely well.

And it made sense.

Inside the Tower...

He didn’t need to fight.

I, however...

Intended to leave the Tower.

Explore forests.

Ruins.

Dangerous zones.

Face monsters.

My work demanded a different approach.

If I didn’t build my own protection... no one else would do it for me.

Well... not before charging me an outrageously high price.

A short while later, I finally reached my laboratory.

I pulled the key from my pocket.

Click.

The lock turned.

I slowly pushed the door open.

Then closed it behind me.

I took a deep breath.

This was the only place where I truly felt at home.

I walked over to the main workbench.

Moved a few tools aside.

Then issued a mental command.

— Biochip.

— Design a mechanical arm for a powered suit of armor.

[Bip!]

[Task received.]

The biochip began constructing the design.

[Project: Powered Armor — Right Arm]

[Status: In Development]

[Phase 1 — Basic Structure]

A three-dimensional model appeared before me.

At first, only a metallic skeleton emerged.

Lightweight beams.

Structural plates.

Internal shafts.

The biochip highlighted every component.

[Recommended Materials: Lightweight Runic Steel Alloy. Enchanted Bronze Reinforcements. Alchemical Silver Internal Conduits for Mana Transmission.]

I observed it carefully.

The structure resembled a human arm.

But it was far more robust.

Every piece had been designed to distribute impacts without compromising mobility.

[Phase 2 — Gear Assembly]

New components appeared.

Hundreds of tiny gears automatically locked into place.

An animation demonstrated the entire system in motion.

[Purpose: Strength Multiplication. Even Torque Distribution. Reduced Joint Wear.]

The biochip highlighted every rotating shaft.

Some gears used ordinary teeth.

Others had tiny runes engraved on their surfaces to reduce friction during mana circulation.

I smiled.

Excellent...

[Phase 3 — Joints]

The shoulder.

The elbow.

The wrist.

Each joint had been designed separately.

The animations showed the arm performing thousands of different movements.

Strikes.

Pushes.

Climbing.

Fine finger precision.

Even delicate motions for handling tools.

[Stabilization System: Enchanted Bearings. Impact Dampeners. Automatic Limiters to Prevent Structural Failure.]

Phase 4 — Artificial Musculature System

Countless extremely thin metallic cables appeared between the armor plates.

They resembled tendons.

But they were made from reinforced silver wires.

[Powered Arm MK-I]

[Precision: 97.4%]

[Average Response Time: 0.04 Seconds]

[Mana Consumption: Extremely Low]

[Status: Conceptual Design Complete.]

I moved my fingers in front of the hologram, enlarging the mechanical arm’s internal components as I examined the details. It still needed a few useful additions.

— Biochip, add a hidden blade housed in a compartment on the back of the mechanical hand.

["Bip!"]

The hologram of the blade quickly materialized and integrated itself into a concealed compartment, completely invisible until activated.

I zoomed in on the back of the hand to inspect the hidden blade more closely.

The blade looked razor-sharp.

Deadly.

And remarkably discreet.

I liked it.

But then another idea occurred to me.

— Biochip, integrate a chainsaw into this mechanical arm as well. I need something a little more... robust.

["Executing command."]

Moments later, a chainsaw appeared, its deadly teeth rotating slowly.

It fit perfectly into the forearm, ready to be activated whenever necessary.

Outside the Tower.

High above that endless ocean of green treetops, a small fleet of enormous black balloons drifted silently through the clouds.

Each one carried a platform suspended by thick ropes, where acolytes stood motionless, watching the landscape below.

Standing aboard the balloon leading the formation was Magaly.

She remained at the edge of the platform, balanced as though the wind had no effect on her body whatsoever.

Her blue eyes slowly swept across the horizon, reflecting the deep blue of the sky.

Her fitted black uniform rippled gently against her slender frame as air currents flowed around the balloon’s structure.

Her long white hair streamed behind her like strands of silver silk, standing out vividly against her dark skin.

Behind her, dozens of other balloons advanced in the same direction.

Each carried several acolytes dressed in black robes, forming a silent expedition bound for the unknown.

Magaly naturally occupied the lead.

Not because anyone had ordered it.

But because everyone recognized her leadership.

She lowered her gaze.

Far below the main platform, aboard another balloon, stood a small figure.

It wore the same black robe.

Its body, however, consisted entirely of pale white bones.

Blue flames burned within its empty eye sockets, illuminating its skull like supernatural lanterns.

Magaly subtly raised two fingers.

The gesture alone was enough.

The creature slowly ascended until it reached the height of her platform.

— Still thinking about the mission? — Magaly asked calmly.

The skeleton crossed its arms.

— It’s hard not to. We’re talking about Arcangrove Tower.

She let out a soft chuckle.

— Fortunately, no one here intends to conquer that fortress.

Her gaze returned to the horizon.

— Our task is much simpler.

— We enter the surrounding area, cause as much chaos as possible, eliminate a few acolytes... and disappear before the real monsters arrive.

— If everything goes according to plan, I’ll finally receive the reward I’ve been promised.

— The formula that will allow me to overcome the final obstacle.

— And become a mage.

The skeleton tilted its head and let out a low laugh.

As it laughed, its body began to change.

Bone was gradually covered by flesh, muscle, and skin in a rapid, almost hypnotic transformation.

Its fingers lengthened.

Its face developed delicate feminine features.

Long hair emerged atop its newly formed head.

A few moments later, there was no skeleton standing before Magaly.

In its place stood a young woman of short stature, with dark skin and delicate features, wearing the exact same black uniform as the other acolytes.

She smiled playfully.

— I’m sure you can do it.

Her eyes shone with excitement.

She looked down at her own hands.

— I’m tired of carrying this curse.

Magaly watched her sister in silence for several seconds.

Then she answered calmly.

— You know you can’t depend on me for that.

Crystina lowered her head slightly.

— I know...

— Then focus on what truly matters.

Magaly’s voice remained firm.

— Reach Level 3.

— As long as you’re still trapped at Level 2, that curse will always find a way to keep you bound.

Crystina took a deep breath.

There were no arguments left.

Only acceptance.

She turned her attention back toward their destination.

On the horizon, between mountains shrouded in mist, a gigantic stone structure began to emerge.

Its height seemed to challenge the very sky itself.

Clouds wrapped around its upper levels like a white cloak.

Magaly narrowed her eyes slightly.

A faint smile appeared on her face.

— So... we’ve finally arrived.
